i have yet to understand why DCU keeps talking about their Npcs....its like ok yeh that is neat that superman will help me with a quest, but what kind of powers can I use? what kind of environments are there in the game?

seems like either : the dcu team knows they cant beat CO, so are focusing the marketing on pure dc fanboys

the character creator/ powers in the game for players are not very good/ exciting so they are focusing on heroes (or it could be a tease to what powers you can use, but i doubt it)

that explains the powers, but there is no details on the different enviorments. (that'd be my real worry, although im not really interested in dcu) i just find it very odd at the lack of information.

sony is basicly only telling players that 1) u can play with the Dc heroes, who are npcs
2) Metropolis is a setting
3) there is a hero creator and there are powers and travel powers

Now that CO is out ... and with the fact that CoX is still alive and kicking...

Is there really a need for DC Online to exist? I mean, I'd really like to see what they think will be innovative or some kind of new twist to the superhero MMO genre...

on the artwork of ga:
i dont want to put any modellers down because they do a good job, but every time i see the translation from (comic) art to computer game it feels to me they are animating a posable action figure rather then bringing pencils and ink to life. not sure if the later is doable tough (and no co comes a bit closer but isnt there yet artisticly imho)

on the whole superhero mmo:
superhero mmo is ok but to me it feels like they are coloring a mmo with superhero figures (same with cox and co) rather then capturing the essence of the comics. over the years these very comics have matured and tell complex stories supported by great artwork. to me it seem dcu is heading the way of a mmo/beat em up mix with an mmo engine.
or did you see batman ever level up (in a radical way) ?
or did you ever see 500 superheroes in city with 10 civilians (other then in kingdom come) ?
for me co feels more like a mutant zoo then a modern day comic book (wich isnt bad just not the same)

the new twist would be to narrate dramatic, immersive stories but thats a tough thing to do if your an mmo company

I'm looking forward to this.

No, you can't play Superman, Batman, or any of the other established heroes. How would that be possible in a game where you play with/against other players, unless you're ok with 100 different Batmans and about the same number of Supermans running around?
Other than a sucky character generator, the only problem I see is what killed the pen and paper DC Heroes role playing game of the late 1980's....the company not being able to keep the license.

If SoE stated prattling on about what the player characters can do, they wouldn't be able to sell this game. Instead there's going to be alot of players saying "Hmmm, but in CO i can "

DC Online will falter within the first year it's released, once everybody finally understands that all WB/SoE has managed to make is a huge JLA type setting in which you're playing second fiddle to several NPC's in which you will never be able to rise higher than...wait, this sounds familiar...ah, that's right, MxO...anothner WB disaster that had so much potiental.

Do yourselves a favor people and wait until you play the free trial before you even consider buying this game. WB is 0 for 0 in the kick-ass gaming department and as for SoE...well i think Smedley's track record speaks for itself.
