Champions Online October changes, Blood Moon releasing on the 27th
Filed under: Patches, News items, Champions Online
Champions Online has seen a lot of update love since launch. By all accounts it's continuing to throughout October with this look at what's to come by Cryptic. The addition of more missions is always welcome, especially in combination with the mission tracking improvements that'll make grouping easier. Even better is the Power House 2.0 that'll come with a new live combat training room and power tips from trainers. Those power tips are going to help a lot of confused players create builds that both suite and actually work for them.
Last but not least is Blood Moon, which will be released on October 27th and promises to bring a hefty chunk of content for all levels to enjoy. The new PvP map known as Zombie Apocalypse sounds like something out of Left 4 Dead and blasting the undead with superpowers is a wholly new concept that we're behind 100%.

- This Past Month
- Lots of power balancing meant free Retcons for everyone!
- Big changes to the Economy were made after we had overestimated the amount of resources players would
- accumulate while leveling. Increased item drops and decreased Retcon costs make it more affordable!
We began addressing gaps in content by adding new missions to Monster Island in Well's Pass. We'll be continually adding more as time goes on.
- Coming up in early October!
- Mission Tracking Updates! – New ways to share missions with groups, including setting primary missions, making more missions shareable, and granting "Assist Bonuses" if you help complete a mission you don't have.
- More Missions! – Bounty missions, UNTIL tasks, and more content in Millennium City and Canada to help address more of the leveling gaps.
- Power House 2.0 – A new room to test out your powers against real enemies, Power Tips from the trainers, and a duel-free zone by the trainers to make purchasing a power much quieter.
- The Blood Moon Rises October 27th!
- Take part in an event of epic proportions. The evil Undying Lord Takofanes has returned to proclaim his coming reign over humanity. Help defeat his undead hordes all over the world.
- Help save the 13 souls of the Undead Heroes to unlock the Celestial power set weeks before it is released to the public.
- New PvP Map: Zombie Apocalypse – Fight for survival against the zombie hordes.
- New power set: Celestial – A support-based set allows you to both heal allies and weaken enemies.

Blasting Zombies with superpowers is not wholly new, as it has been in City Of Heroes for several years.

Ah, but when some of those zombies are player-controlled zombified heroes . . . That's at least kinda new. :)

But blasting zombies to keep from becoming a zombie for some PvP action Is new.

Complaining about MMORPG is not wholly new, as it has been in many forums for several years.

Not so. The launch event for World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, had people able to become zombies, and turn other players (and npc's) into zombies.

I didn't know that, Darkthunder. thanks

Yes that part is new, I just wish the story mentioned it.

Actually WoW had the whole Zombie invasion thing just prior to WotLK launch where you would become infected, transform into a zombie, then be able to go into an enemy faction town and infect all the NPCs and Players there. It was a hoot.

Amazing that both CoH and Aion released in and around the same time and the roll out experience has been drastically different:
CoH: Immediate fixes, content patches, and balancing efforts with little to no complaining about server stability.
Aion: Horrendous queues from pre-launch on, a week or more to fix issues resulting in queues, server instability, lack of communication from developers, and heaping mounds of gold spam in every chat channel.
Someone please tell NCSoft to go over to the Cryptic offices and ask about how to roll out a game in the US/EU!

CoH was released more than 5 years ago...

I meant CO, not CoH. CoH is a crappy game. :)

I am going to reframe from mentioning anything about fanboi's not being able to get their MMO names right. As I'm sure it was some kinda of brain fart on an unintended massive scale. (Like the lv 80 mage in WoW during a Heroic VH opened up a trade window asking me for food and water...yes I was a Mage, but so was he. And we do Mana Biscuits at that level. )
But Sorcefire, City of Heroes (CoX) was not a crappy game. It's was quite innovated for it's day. And is my favorite game next to WoW. It's just taking a very long time catching up to the newer MMO's, currently.

Personally, I think it was ridiculous to release a primary (now) support power set, almost an essential one for healers, AFTER the release. When they could have picked a much less significant one.

I actually like the fact that not only does Cryptic not "build in" the unholy trinity, They have not pandered to it. That aspect of MMOs has reigned far too long in the genera. It limits alternative game play. It is possible to play a healer but, in general, a healer is not required. likewise tanks and DPS are not "essential" for a successful group. I LOVE the fact that my main, that would be generally classified as a DPS build, can tank by changing up its build as well as switching build to be a support healer. adaptability of this type is one of the best features of CO.
In light of that, the addition of the new framework, which is not exclusively a healing/support set, opens up a new type of game play, not a necessary type. That is a pretty nifty thing.
FYI, there is the capability to create healers and buff support already in the system.

I've been able to do decent healing without it, and if I had wanted to i could have geared toward it and been fine, it will be cool to have this though. I may even respec it into my toon.

Personally I'm not really sure why they're even bothering to make another support set at this point -- you can already make strong support/healers using telepathy and sorcery. I'd much rather see them add something entirely new, like an energy based melee set. City of Heroes had tons of them (stone melee, energy melee, fire melee, dark melee, and so on) yet CO (made by the same people) only has weapon based melee sets and Might (Superstrength).

Aion's launch issue's are due to high popularity.
Server queue's and lag due to a high volume of players is a problem CO wishes it had.
