Embracing the Sith in Star Wars: The Old Republic
Filed under: New titles, News items, Star Wars: The Old Republic
Everyone is worried about the Jedi player population when it comes to Star Wars: The Old Republic, but the Sith are in every way a likely -- if not moreso -- threat. With franchise analogs like Vader and Maul, there's going to be a lot of people auto-running around the game to the tune of Imperial March.
Even BioWare seems to think the Sith are kind of a big deal in this new developer blog promoting the greatness of embracing the darkness within us all. We're not even exaggerating in this case, the blog really does go on for quite some time about how awesome dark Jedi are -- so don't be too shocked when legions of Sith roam the battlefield looking for Republic blood.

This is an inherent problem with the star wars universe. It is hard to really make other options truly compelling next to the notion of a playable Jedi if the game is going to be combat-centric.
Everyone else playing other options are doing their best to simply not conform to the allure. This is why I wished the game adopted a 3 person playable party similar to the singleplayer games, as this would allow me to have my Jedi guy, but also my Smuggler guy etc. on the same team.

I suspect you are under estimating the number of folks who have no intention of playing a jedi as their main.

The problem with StarWars world is that the Jedi and the Sith are suppoused to be cooler and stronger than other people.
BIoWare can deal with the stronger problem, but Jedi and Sith will just be cooler than other classes.

I really think that Jedi and Sith will be the number one and two spot for most played classes but I don't think that the gap will be that great. I was out with my buddies a few weeks ago and out of the six of us only one had plans to make Jedi/Sith their main. The rest of us are far more interested in the other classes and what has not been announced yet.
In the end though people gravitate towards what is fun to play which at this point we can not predict.

Take a look at the current state of SWG. Not everyone is a Jedi, even though you can select it as a starting profession. I think people fail to realize that MMO players tend to select classes that most compliment their preferred playstyle. To think anything else is ignorant.
Look at the DK in WoW. Yes it's cool, and yes there were a ton of them when WotLK was released. Now look how many people are actually playing the class as we speak. Not many.
it's amazing how many assumptions MMO players make about stuff, and fail to look at the long term.

Well you obviously weren't a PRE-NGE player, and didn't see the server when NGE went live on SWG, when they made Jedi a starting class. All I saw were people with glow sticks wanting to duel Pre-CU Jedi (I was one of those Pre-CU Jedi, and that was the last day I played SWG). Then, becouse everyone thought he was going to be the next Anakin or Mace Windu, they nerfed Jedi... BADLY, to the point were a Medic could slap you with his stethoscope and kill you. Also, DK in WOW is a bad example. A LOT of new players went DK for the "free mount" and "free armor", and I saw some people that had no clue how to tank or dps when the class came out, but used the class because it looked cool and they wanted to be Arthas, hence giving DKs a bad rep the first few months after launch. Most of those "bad" DKs are now bank mules. I want to play SWTOR very much (probably will make a BH), but one thing that people must understand is that, to make it fair, you CANNOT make Jedi an alpha class (what it should be next to Bounty Hunter). People thing just because you can wield a lightsaber you will be the shit, and its that mind set that gives classes bad names. If some players would understand that, Jedi overpopulation wouldn't be a problem, like it has been on the past. Please, control the Jedi population, have your noob neuter :) j/k.

I think the only danger is that a certain type of player will pick the Jedi, and only the Jedi, making that class the stereotypical newbie class, i.e. huntard, etc.

Nice ignorant assumption about people who play Hunter. I bet you also make posts about everyone in your opposing faction being "kiddies"
RogueJedi86 said on 3:22PM 10-05-2009
@Mavicz
It has nothing to do with opinion on the Hunter class. Huntard is just a nickname for hunters who don't know how to play their class. Since people know what a Huntard indicates, they use it to indicate players of other classes who also can't play their class, but adamantly refuse to learn how to play it better. There just aren't convenient nicknames for other classes who fit those criteria.
But on topic, I do agree with Maika. Many people(like the cliche of children and young teens) will only roll Jedi and Sith because they liked how flashy they were in the movies. Then you'll have kids who rolled Jedi/Sith because of the movies, without any real inkling of how they'll actually end up playing. They'll end up playing very poorly and being nothing like the movie Jedi/Sith. It's their choice, but it'll be weird.

I think anyone who cares what other people play has a problem with their personal life to be honest. who cares how many jedi they have in game. I was so tired of listening to this whine in SWG, I can wait for all the whining with TOR.
Worry about you and your friends. No one else should matter.

Agreed. I don't care if everyone is a Jedi/Sith/Wookie Cantina Dancer -- I'll play what I want. :)

I personally plan to try out trooper. I'm big into ranged and it looks like it could be fun. I'm sure I'll give jedi or sith a go, but bounty hunter and trooper are mor my style

I'll be a Trooper, I don't care what anyone else says. My favorite games are Star Wars Battlefront(the first 2 games) and Republic Commando. Games where I can be non-Jedi all I want, especially Republic Commando.
"A lightsaber. A more elegant weapon for a more elegant time........yeah well times change."
I'll be sitting in the trenches mowing down Sith by the dozens while they wish they could get in melee range of me.

Exactly.
I think what people forget is that there was a reason why luke skywalker was one of the last force users in the galaxy. cause the Mandalorians are freaking awesome, that's why.
I will be rolling a Mandalorian, I don't even care what class. I mean Canderous Ordo in KotOR 2 was probably the most awesome sidekick you could have in that game, other than HK-47.
RogueJedi86 said on 1:55PM 10-06-2009
Well actually Vladeon, I could care less about Mandalorians. I'm not fan of Jedi, but Mandalorians are getting pretty overrated these days. They're even more overhyped than the Jedi/Sith. And for the record, I think Bounty Hunter is the closest you'll get to Mandalorian, since Bounty Hunter players start out in the tryouts for the Great Hunt that the Mandalorians are holding. But Bounty Hunters are part of the Sith Empire, no thanks. Too many kids and teens wanting to be "badass" will be rolling Sith. It'll be like the kiddies in the Horde on WoW all over again. But Trooper on Republic? I'll be there.
And Luke was one of the last Jedi because of the Clone Troopers and the Sith, not because of the Mandalorians. As of the time of the 6 movies, the Mandalorians were nearly extinct, and only grew again decades after the movies, under Boba Fett's tutelage. Palpatine's masterful plot with the Clone Troopers is what killed 95% of the Jedi.

Trooper, Smuggler, and BH all look awesome...but man, there is just something about having the lightsaber and being able to choke the hell out of someone from a distance...

Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid.

In every Star Wars game I've ever played, going all the way back to Jedi Knight, X-wing vs Tie Fighter, Kotor, SWG, it doesn't matter, I've not ONCE played anything other than Light Side Jedi, or rebel. Period.
Nor will I ever.
I never unlocked in SWG, and quit when they ruined it so I've never played a Jedi in an mmo. I don't care how many Sith there are or how powerful they are blah blah blah. They are Sith and they may be plentiful, but is this not always the way of vermin?
As far as TOR goes - for every blackhearted, underhanded, malicious, and cowardly Sith or Imperial out there, I have a knife, blaster, or a light saber with your name on it.
I mean really... there's already enough whining about every aspect of gaming imaginable, do we really need to start with whining about what class people choose to play?

Maybe the guys at massively could get a poll of some kind going, just to see what their reader base is thinking about the class spread. Something simple like Jedi/sith or non-jedi/sith. I would be interested in the results. (or if anyone knows of one somewhere that has been conducted please link).
