DUST 514 trailer released

EVE Online creators CCP Games made quite a stir when they announced the console title DUST 514 in August. It's one of the more ambitious game concepts we've heard about in quite a while. A ground based console MMO that ties in with EVE Online? Two separate games, one setting and one community? (The game's tagline is "ONE UNIVERSE // ONE WAR".) There are so many questions that remain unanswered about how DUST mercenaries will interact with and affect EVE's capsuleers, but a more immediate question is, "How does it look so far?"
Unless you were actually in Cologne to see CCP's DUST 514 reveal at GDC Europe, it's likely all you've had to base your impressions off of was a somewhat blurry video capture of the presentation. That is, until now. CCP's released the GDC Europe DUST 514 trailer and it's good to see a crisp version of that footage. The trailer shows how the conflict between EVE's Caldari and Gallente races plays out on the ground on the Gallente planet Intaki V. It gives us a look at War Barge interiors, Mobile Command Centers (MCC) floating over what is now a war-torn Intaki homeworld, and some of the ground and air vehicles that DUST 514 players will put to use.

Watched it on Joystick earlier, it looks awesome. Although you gotta wonder, the gritty military sci-fi look is good for Eve, but in the FPS angle it kinda comes off as a mix between HL2 and Halo - if the faith of any fantasy MMO is to be compared to WoW, I guess any FPS coming out has to be compared to HL2 and Halo.

Actually it was shown being played at the FanFest and it pretty much looks the same.

When CCP first demo'd EVE Online, other games companies even insisted it had to be pre-rendered and of course they were wrong. I believe this is all in-game footage, they even let some people try the current version of the game out.
It's likely that the events and camera motion in this video are scripted to give a certain feel to the video and they do tend to render trailers at a massive resolution and then scale them down for a sharp-but-antialiased effect. But I would fully expect the graphics to be that good.

DUST will live or die based on its content, i.e., the REASON for fighting, not because it is necessarily better or significantly different then any other FPS out there. People keep saying that it looks like X, Y, or Z fps, as if it is just going to be another FPS out there, competing against the likes of Modern Warfare 2. It's superficial similarities to other FPS are irrelevant. Of course it looks similar, there's only so many ways you can represent FPS combat in a game. The draw will have to do with its persistency, the fact that you are fighting over real objectives and that your battles actually are part of a larger picture.

This game will be fantastic, probably with taste-related caveats... but CCP isn't going to release a flop. Too much is at stake for them now.
For years, whenever people somewhere in an MMO were talking to their guild/clan mates, saying things like "wouldn't it be neat if...", CCP was already doing it in EVE or developing it. This DUST stuff is a huge leap forward for all games.
Also, the "subscription" model (there is no subscription model, small limited/contained microtransaction system to affect one small part of the game) outta teach the other people trying to do MMOs for the 360 how it's done, as thusfar people have had a lot of trouble making it happen due to XBL/MS restrictions.

It's going to be undeniably awesome. Just like Halo, but consistent, and in the EVE universe. Oh, and better. That's a lot of win in one basket of awesome.

I don't think it's pre-rendered, although it's obviously a scripted sequence. Killzone 2 for PS3 looks very similar (both in terms of graphic quality and overall aesthetic).

Whether or not this is live or pre-rendered isn't really what should be discussed, I think. When a game company hasn't even divulged basic information about the product, I'm pretty sure graphics shouldn't be your first priority of analyzing.
Unless you're doing it for the reason of figuring out what the gameplay is like-that I understand.

It's odd that so many people think it will be awesome, despite being released for consoles which honestly have a glut of FPS, based on a property few have even heard of, done by a company with zero FPS experience, and possibly requiring microtransactions to advance in, which no console FPS I know of has. Considering that even Blizzard wound up shelving starcraft:ghost, and that as of yet the only successful MMOs released on console are by console companies like Sega and Square-Enix, you wonder what drives all this confidence.

I'm pretty sure the confidence comes from past experience with CCP. Eve Online, while not everyone's cup of tea, is a great game. The developer has delivered on that game. This one will be set in the same universe, possibly have ramifications on the other game and vice versa and based solely on the limited experience of a trailer looks to be a decent FPS.
It's not as though an FPS is hard to sell. Also, take note that many FPS games are beginning to add in some elements of RPGs and consider that this time the FPS is being developed by a company with a strong RPG background this really does have the potential to be a hit on the same level as the original game.
If Dust has even half the success that Eve has then I think we'd have no choice but to consider it a huge success as far as FPS games go even if it's not as successful as an MMO might be.

EVE though is very much a modest success, and the "great game" tends to be more along the lines of a niche title, it's not great in the sense of appealing to a wide demographic. I think people tend to blow CCP's competence out of proportion to it's actual record.
Even though EVE may be a success, you really cant base future products on that track record. I can think of many examples where a very strong developer has fumbled when they have tried to branch out into a genre that they have never worked with, despite having a solid past line-up of games. Capcom and Auto Modellista come to mind, for one.
I understand loyalty, but even with the game I am the most loyal to, FFXI, that gives me no guarantee that FFXIV will automatically be awesome.

While I have never played Eve I think CCP games can be given the benefit of the doubt here because of their "modest" success in a market dominated by gaming giants and the creative things they've done with the genre.
I think they may have had a minor success if they had just taken a standard MMORPG model and made it spaceships instead of characters.
Instead they have added some wonderful twists to the game including the unique take on player economy and allowing for a very harsh, hostile player-policed play environment.
Sure, they could just plop another FPS at our feet but I am optimistic they have some surprises up their sleeves.

Combat Arms for a microtransactions-based MMOFPS. DDO for a microtransaction-based MMO that does not require money for anything in the store.
Since DUST is intended to plug right into EVE, chances are that they'll use the same server clusters. And if they make the benefits of civilian contracts worth the cost, there will be no end to the content, all of it being user-generated. With the complex EVE economy, a mercenary group would probably use its funds to buy items crafted inside EVE, making success directly pay into progression in a smooth fashion.
They already have most of the tools in place, there's no real reason why it should be bad. And with the visuals I'm seeing, pre-rendered or not, there's a good chance that vehicle combat will play a big part, perhaps with smaller EVE ships being able to attack installations directly. It's already obvious that a cross between space platform and planetside combat, which means planetside bases.
CCP hasn't been known to mess stuff up. I think they'll do fine.

Some of you got it wrong... it's not an FPS, it's a '...MMOFPS and done right!'
That's what CCP stated on fanfest.
It's console only (and there is a reason for that) and it's gonna use microtransactions. The Eve and Dust can work without each other just fine, but if you decide to cooperate (or e.g. you have to cause your enemy does) the game gets much more interesting and fun.
What I really like about CCP is that, compared to the size of the company and income they spend tons more on research and development then much much bigger competitors.
Seriously.. the code which is responsible for physics in Eve was first written by some chinese professor or doctor of .... Chaos Physics.. whatever it is.. and on top of this, I really don't know any other company who hires real doctor of economy...
Really really big kudos to CCP as they have the balls to pull something like that out and it works great.
I highly recommend you watch fanfest 2009.. even if you are not the fan of Eve but there is some stuff talking about I think it's gonna be the future of the gaming... at least I hope so.. otherwise, all we are gonna be ever playing will be countless clones of WoW...
