More Celestial powers from Champions Online
Filed under: Super-hero, Game mechanics, News items, Champions Online
Last week we gave you a look at the first three powers from Champion Online's new Celestial power set. That small preview was enough to raise hopes that Cryptic was addressing some common complaints -- specifically that there weren't enough benefits to group play. Solo play seemed to be a strong focus, which was a bit frustrating to some players. Happily, it looks like Champions Online is continuing to expand grouping benefits with this power set. We've gotten a look at a new Celestial power every day, and the vast majority of them offer advantages to nearby allies.
The diversity of these powers is what really gives them their advantage. If you just really prefer solo play, you're not left out of the new power set. Nearly any Celestial power that can help an ally will hurt a foe, it's just a matter of targeting. Cryptic seems to have hit upon a great balance with these powers, striking a good mix between target damage, ally buffs and heals, and buffs for your own character.
We're looking forward to more updates and especially looking forward to trying this new power set.

Finally. A powerset for people who don't how to play an MMO unless they're firmly attached to a tank's ass like a barnacle to a boat hull.

Ha! Love it. So much whining done about a healing powerset. I wonder if the next powerset is gonna be a tank centric one.

This set looks pretty damn "up my alley" for a couple reasons.
1) I've always gravitated toward 'solo-friendly support' type characters (Druids in EQ2, Kinetics defenders/corruptors in CoH), and these powers look like they'll suit both play modes.
2) My current 90s Cosmic Hero doesn't feel cosmic enough with Force and Telekinetic powers. Aside from the big glowin' angel wings, it's pretty thematically perfect.

The world of CO only allows you to use powers for one purpose, to progress along one single path, to have one single effect - quests and missions are as restrictive and limited as its possible to imagine.....adding more powers to an already massive selection is not what this game needs at all.
CO urgently needs more world mechanics so that we have some variety in the things we get to do with them and some choice in how you approach differing challenges. ATM it's all gloss and no substance where it really matters - in the world you spend 90% of your playlife.

From the sound of things there are quite a few new world mechanics coming as part of the Blood Moon update. Its not just a power set. The big one that Cryptic seems to be missing is non-combat activities. Some mini-games like those timed ski slopes in CoX would be great to have year round.
If you're looking for moral decision making then I think we can count on that becoming a part of a much later villain update. Right now we are all good guys doing good deeds. There isn't as much room for moral decisions.
