Funcom unveils The Secret World beta
Filed under: Betas, New titles, News items, The Secret World
In spite of recent layoffs, Funcom seems to be moving forward steadily with The Secret World, offering a peek into the secret societies and a chance at the beta. The official site invites you to take the test to win beta access, and offers up a quiz asking "Which secret society do you belong to?"
The quiz is brief, a fun diversion that serves to give an overview of the three secret societies in The Secret World: the Illuminati (described as the notorious bad boys and girls of The Secret World), Templars (Crusaders, judges, the holy terror), and Dragon (manipulators and conspirators). Taking the quiz and giving your email address nets you an initiate kit, an invitation to join the forums, and a shot at a beta key.
So if you are looking forward to this upcoming game, rest assured that it seems to be delayed, but not dead.

Uh... this is quite old. The quiz has been up since at least September 3rd, which is when I took it. It's not really "news" anymore.

The quiz itself is pretty old. But the fact that it enters you for a chance at beta testing is new. Previously, taking the quiz only allowed you to choose a society and gave you a pretty lame media kit.
Actually, the fact that I had taken the quiz when Massively first announced it and then got an email from Funcom last week inviting me to take the quiz to register for beta has left me wondering if I don't have to take the quiz again in order to be registered for beta. Probably not, but they were unclear on that count.

Funcom sent out an email with updates to this little quiz with news you can get into the beta. The very day this was posted.
So actually Massively isn't reporting old news, they're on top of it. You all just missed that Funcom email and are so far out of the loop on it, that you can only plug your ears and shout "OLD!" when in fact it's not.

This is a HIGHLY annoying SNAFU on behalf of the Massively.com staff. My heart stopped when I saw the words "The Secret World" and "Beta" at the top of my screen.

Yeah... I was so excited to see this, but a little disappointed when I realized it was the same thing that was revealed in September. Bad Rubi! BAD! ;)

Well, unlike the other three. I hadn't heard of this yet. Props for posting it Massively. Glad to see it. Only briefly saw the games name before, first time I've actually looked into it.

Massively a little slow on this one, but no matter. It's important news anyways, and God knows these guys cover a helluvalot of other things.

The implication that this says anything about the game's status is not so appropriate given the timing. ;)
I was assigned to the dragons, but picked the Templars.

Who the hell is going to play another funcom game after the complete failure that was Age of Conan?

Anybody with half a brain cell I suspect? AoC is now a pretty damn solid MMO, and Funcom have a pretty damn solid track record.

Me too. Boycotts are over-rated. Chances are the games are made by two different development teams anyways.
Besides, I liked Age of Conan. Not enough to keep playing but I didn't quit because it was a bad game, just not my type of game.

I'll try it out, I mean I've played funcom games before and found them to be great, while some are not so great. I mean, anarchy online was good stuff and Dreamfall: the longest journey is still regarded as one of the best point and click adventure games of all time. I liked where AoC was heading, but I wasn't able to get into it because the graphics were so messy, but that's just me and doesn't reflect the game-play at all. I could see this game (the Secret World) ending up being something like a Deus Ex MMO, which I think would be amazing. I didn't know about this quiz until the people here on Massively.com told me about it and I appreciate them bringing us news about the genre of games I like best. Of course there will always be people out there who've heard about such and such a thing before everyone else, but that doesn't make it irrelevant to everyone else. Maybe y'all should take that into consideration before blasting massively.com's writers on something that may seem old, but in actuality isn't really to most people. just a thought.

This has been up for ages Massively! You really should change the title, it's hugely misleading.

Actually, not only is this old, but I'm pretty sure masively has already reported.

There are times when Massively seems right on, and then they start slipping on the news again. I am a long fan of this site, but it bums me out when they start falling behind on the curve.
How hard is it to have someone assigned to check every MMO site for news updates and also check a catch-all email that is subscribed to every MMO. Make the check 2-3 times a day.
Seriously, I do exactly that for about 10 games and it takes me all of 15 minutes. I get writing articles about news takes way more time, but of those game usually nothing is worth reporting about and isn't being a writer about writing anyway? Once a day I take another 15 minutes to quickly scan the hot topic forum threads on these games too for interesting tidbits.
Again, I am a fan of Massively, but I really feel that the idea of being current with the MMO news is a goal that should have been achieved a long time ago by a blog owned by AOL Inc.

Since you want to be so judgmental with Massively on this article, you do know that Funcom had sent out an email the very day this was posted that was about this very subject.
Perhaps, just perhaps, that email is why this got put up on Massively.
