Masthead Studios delves into Earthrise crafting process

Earthrise creators Masthead Studios have already made clear that their forthcoming title will be a far future sandbox MMO, a post-apocalyptic setting where PvP will be a major aspect of gameplay. What hasn't been as clear is exactly how the extensive crafting process they've discussed in the past will actually work out in normal gameplay. Certainly we've heard a great deal about customization of crafted goods and the potential to become well-known for your own variations on items, but we never had a real overview of those game mechanics. That is, until now.
Masthead aims to dispel any confusion surrounding Earthrise's crafting system in a two-part series of blog posts that kicked off today as part of their Question of the Week offering to the community. "The Crafting Process", part one of two, poses the theoretical example of a player -- let's call him "Tim" -- who clearly hates Burzun mutants. Enough so that Tim wishes to craft an assault rifle specifically tailored for killing this particular type of mutant. Masthead Studios walks the reader through the skills required to create such a weapon, the components that must be gathered, and how Tim will be able to extract needed resources from those materials.
A detailed explanation of the crafting system itself is beyond the scope of this post at Massively, so if you're interested in Earthrise this latest Question of the Week is highly recommended. Remember to keep an eye out for the follow-up piece on the official Earthrise forums next week as well.

I am guessing from the treatment we received, they are not going to make the 2009 ambiguous date..

Treatment? Stop making inane posts in the forums. Look at all the people just on Massively who have said they've posted the same thing. Would you rather the mods let the forums become cluttered? When they have a release date, they'll say it.

Well if they left one up with an explanation they aren't going to hit their targetted date you would have less inquiries. I know logic is hard to grasp but when you have a target release of 2009 and we're nearing the end of it, people want to know what's up.

Yes, they do answer the question though they do not give an exact statement. Many MANY times have people asked this question and simply we the community can not answer. So get in line and wait. They will get to it at some point soon hopefully.
Please do not post questions asking when is release if no one knows. The forums are for talking about new mechanics and also about the game itself. It is not there to ask when will the game be released that is left to an interview or a announcement directly from MHS.

Good to hear that finally someone is taking the approach that crafted gear should be all about the customization. I'm so sick of the "fixed recipe" model that we've seen in WoW, EQ2, LOTRO, RoM, Fallen Earth, Alganon.. so many games..

This is exactlly what I want to read about from upcoming MMO's.
Real looks at the feature sets that illustrate how they're going to stimulate and engage the player differently than usual. This is real meat, as opposed to the typical rigamoral you read from some production manager in some interview where he uses buzz words about casuals and hardcores, crafting and pvp, story and solo content yadda yadda yadaa.
I'm excited about this MMO now.
