Dungeons and Dragons Online opening new server

We told you recently about the massive population growth that Dungeons and Dragons Online has experienced since going free-to-play last summer, and Turbine is keeping pace with that growth nicely. Players enjoy a solid, extensive game at the free level, as well as a seemingly endless supply of additional content at either a microtransaction or subscription level -- including the first major content update since the free-to-play model launched in June.
Today they're adding something less on the gameplay side and more on the foundation side: a new server to keep up with the increased player base. Turbine announced the addition of new server world Orien (after the Dragonmarked noble house in Eberron) yesterday. It's only open to new characters -- character transfers are unfortunately not available at the time -- but it will certainly help to spread the server load out a bit as more players head in to see what all the fuss is about.

Glad to see F2P is working out for them. I tried the game when it went F2P and it wasn't my cup of tea but I am always happy to hear of F2P success stories.

Turbine made a pretty bold move with the switch to F2P and it's good to see it worked... DDO is a solid game, and it woul've been sad to see it shut down.

I am glad they are doing well, too. More power to them.
I would have liked this game better if they'd offered Heroes (as in Guild Wars) for purchase at the online store instead of Hirelings (which I found to be pretty limited and lame).

Hirelings may be limited, but they were never designed to be as good as players. They're just an extra pair of hands if you need it - a hireling cleric for instance, can help you beat that difficult encounter where before you were a bit lacking in the healing department. Or, you can just use a hireling to use a switch which you fear might spring a trap.. Plenty of opportunities to put them to good use I say! In short: I really enjoy having a hireling in our group, as I regularly play as part of a group of four friends, and sometimes that's not enough to pull through. With a hireling in tow however, we've been able to cope with situations more comfortably than before.
Furthremore, there's a lot more to D&DO than Hirelings. It's just one feature. Dismissing this game just because one of those features does not sit well with you, might be a bit hasty, don't you think?
