EverQuest II: Sentinel's Fate opens up pre-orders
Filed under: Fantasy, EverQuest II, Expansions, Launches, News items

The latest expansion for EverQuest II, EverQuest II: Sentinel's Fate, is slated for release in February both digitally and in retail, but why wait until then to pick up your copy? No, far better to pre-order the expansion and be ready for the day it launches -- which, not coincidentally, is now an option. There are both Regular and Collector editions available, as is the standard for MMOs these days, and each one comes with its own little bonuses as well as the usual little extras for ordering ahead of time.
Sentinel's Fate promises to be a broad expansion for everyone playing EverQuest II, offering a level cap of 90, several hundred new quests, new dungeons, and new alternate advancement systems for characters. If you're a dedicated player of the game, they probably had you at "EQII expansion," but the expansion also looks to be the perfect point for new players to jump in and start getting involved in the world of Norrath. Take a look at the full list of the expansion's features, go ahead and pre-order, and get ready for February to be booked solid.

One thing that really sucks about every expansion raising the level cap is the barrier to entry for new players gets higher and higher. EQ2 is nice because of the mentoring system, but still the higher the cap gets the more desolate the lowbie areas get and the more content that gets obsoleted.
I like a skill point based system like EVE or pre Cu SWG, people are free to do new stuff and try out different play styles without constantly having the bar raised higher and higher over their heads.

If you read the fine print, downloading it early does not get you into the game the day that it launches but a week later. It is those people who buy a copy at the store that gets in on the 16th.
Seems odd.

I played eq2 for two years. I've now played WOW for 2 almost 3. I went back to eq2 a while back to try it again and I couldn't stand it. The game is just boring. The fighting is boring. The zones are completely empty.
This expansion's features have nothing that would even make me think about coming back.

EQ 2's expansions don't always cater just to high-end players, for what it's worth. There was an expansion which added Fae (the good race) and introduced new zones for every level from 1-60 or 1-70, whatever the cap was at the time. The expansion that added the Sarnak (the evil race) added a great big zone that goes from levels 1-20 and still has the best loot in the game for newbies. A number of mid-level zones have been redone to make them solo- and small-group friendly (Lavastorm and Everfrost, for instance). As the developers themselves have said on the official forums (no, I don't have links), since the majority of the playerbase is at level cap, it makes more sense for them to add new content there.
I'd also say that on Antonia Bayle, at least, the low-level zones are plenty populated. Especially considering that the game is five years old, there are more than enough people running around in Commonlands and Antonia to keep the game from feeling empty.
I agree, though, that there doesn't seem like a whole lot will be put into this expansion to win back lapsed players. And unlike the last expansion, it looks like you have to buy the collector's edition of the boxed version to get a free mount (previously, you'd get it with any boxed version). Folks have been screaming for years about digital downloads getting less stuff for these expansions, so it's just business as usual for this game.

LOTRO and Everquest games give expansions a bad name both of them look like they where make up within two workdays and story line look like they where just pulling it out of there ***. And later just rush out of the door to give there players more content but not more bang for there bucks. And I hate that lets higher the level cap marketing crap!
I like more the Expansion model of WoW where you got a expansion on a 2 year time frame and they not rush it in stores. The new Expansion is also new player friendly like it goes back to the old world and make it more updated to be more like the new content! Also finally allow flying mounts in the old world gonna be great! Also WoW does not give all the content out at ones.... they give it out in patch updates and allow you to quit the game for a time where things go slow and play something else!

EQ2 is a great game. People saying it's empty, unless they refer to population (in some areas IMO) are wrong, cause the game is full of content, quests, factions and has the best housing of all games.
One of the problems, we gamers have, is that we always tend to level at lightspeed and seem to need to reach the high end content soon. I've been playing EQ2 the casual way and i'm having so much fun. We've built a good guild hall and we are leveling slowly and tasting every zone.
The only problem EQ2 has, in my opinion, is the poor performance compared to other games. I remember 2005, when i left EQ2 for WOW, just because WOW runs smoothly and EQ2 not.
We'll see what Sentinel's Fate has to offer. I think SOE should launch another fantasy MMO soon, using what they've learn in all these years. They need, though, to redesign visuals in a future game and improve movement and animations, leaving so many heavy textures behind as a secondary goal.
Hugs.
