Star Trek Online open beta dates announced
Filed under: Sci-fi, New titles, News items, Star Trek Online

Star Trek Online is currently in closed beta, which began last month. Champions Online six-month and lifetime subscribers have been told that they'll be in the closed beta before the end of the year, so those folks should get at least a month of beta access before the game hits the retail shelves on February 2nd, 2010.
Once the open beta begins, you'll likely see a flood of information and guides about STO since the NDA will have been lifted. This will provide everyone with key information as to the finer details of the gameplay mechanics.

Why? He would just assimilate your entire crew.

Which would be awesome!

Nice we send you a video link with a guy from Cryptic basically saying the same thing and you ignored it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CpaTO_G2fQ

Here's to hoping my six month commitment to Champions pays off! Still waiting on that sweet sweet email.

Ouch. Still waiting too eh?
I love how they used closed beta spots to sell Champions and some people will get 2-3 months of closed beta access and some people maybe 2 weeks.
Life isn't fair - and neither is Cryptic's deals you pay money for either.
I think STO is being rushed. Maybe it is about that Activision bonus I hear about. I dunno. But I have the distinct idea this is going to be another great intellectual property that gets tied to a mediocre MMO. I have yet to see anything really forward thinking in their gameplay.

Activision bonus? What are you talking about? Cryptic has nothing to do with Activision...
Did you mean Atari? If so what Atari bonus?

I hope these are easy to come by, as I'm intrigued but not sufficiently to blind-buy a Cryptic game (and I can't in good conscience place pre-orders I'm planning to cancel) - could be quite a wait for a free trial after launch!
Although Champions offered one a few weeks in, so I suppose it needn't be all doom & gloom if I don't get an invite.

Yikes, lifetime subs still haven't got their STO beta access? You essentially bought a lifetime sub that used STO beta access as one of it's main selling points, even placing the beta access BEFORE the Champions Online features in the advertisements. Now they're basically telling you that you're getting... guaranteed open beta access? Like everyone else who didn't buy the lifetime? (Yeah, I know it's a little bit extra exclusive time)
This reminds me of Cryptic ending the lifetime subscription sale before the announced ending date. Also, changing the combat dramatically on launch day.
Sure, you weren't guaranteed closed beta access, but jesus... They sure as hell made it their number one selling point for buying a CO lifetime subscription. MMORPG.com just had an article about it.

Only some have not gained access.

I don't want to play open beta on any Crypic games ever. Not after the debacle of Champions Online and the game completely changing on Launch Day 1 and ruining my whole feel of the game.
That being said, I'll just wait till day one to buy the game and play it from there, LOL!

Wow... awesome... glad I bought that Lifetime Membership with Champions Online to get my closed beta release. I am tending to believe that STO is going to be the next Matrix Online... ugh.

Well closed beta isn't over yet and you don't know how many have been invited or how many are scheduled to be invited before it's over. No one said anything about getting in Day 1.

Still. If I had shelled out the cash JUST to get into Beta I'd expect to get a considerable amount of play time for my money.
I never thought about this aspect and will make sure I never pay for Beta access unless it's secondary to what I am paying for.

You $200 to get into a beta or to get a lifetime sub to a game with beta access thrown in as a perk? The discount of having a lifetime sub should have been the main reason for doing this. Otherwise you paid a lot of money to do bug reports on an unfinished game.
And that is nuts.

I can't wait to play this game. I'll be helming the U.S.S. Sakura

Still waiting for an invite here too... I'd really like to not regret buying that lifetime sub. ;)

Hm, it's a pity that this "Open Beta" is again nothing more than a promotional gag instead of a real performance and stress testing phase.
It's also a pity that some people seem to see this only as a means of playing the game first and not testing the game which might actually increase its quality.
The whole beta of this particular game seems so short already, a short and bad open beta just does not sound very good.
