Rumor: Blizzard's next MMO to be an MMOFPS
Filed under: Sci-fi, MMO industry, News items, Rumors
Yep, another MMO rumor for you guys about the Blizzard's next title. While Blizzard has been very adamant in saying that their next MMO would be very different from World of Warcraft, there might be more difference here than just the game's setting.
The French gaming site NoFrag is reporting that Blizzard's next game will include an FPS portion as well as a social portion, splitting the player between two systems. While the player will be able to meet people, chat, and make friends in the social area of the game, they will also be able to then launch into the FPS portion with their friends and battle over objectives.
Adding this to the widely spread rumor that this next game is going to be a sci-fi title and Kaplan's hints that the game might be hitting consoles? We have a feeling we might be looking at a cyberpunk setting here, if players are switching between two "modes" of play. The social play would be set in the real world while the FPS would be set in a virtual landscape. But, of course, that's just our best guess.

Actually, does anyone remember the fabled "Starcraft: Ghost" that was supposed to be a multiplateformer Action/Adventure game that was all but scrapped. It's highly possible that the work on that evolved into being an Online Multiplayer Shooter game. Not like WoW, mind you, but very actiony and yet very fun.

Good thing they said it was going to be a new IP.

From a friend of a friend - the new MMOFPS is based on the novel "Snowcrash" so you can expect skateboarding and car combat.

This rumour was also around at E3 and other game shows last year because of the amount of time head guys of Blizzard were spending looking at, taking notes, and talking about other MMOFPS games like Global Agenda. So rumours last year were that Blizzard was also making an MMOFPS and interested in what others were doing.
Not a surprise, really. It's a very popular genre, translates well to the consoles, and Blizzard has long rumoured that they want to do an FPS game, Ghost was their first try (although not done out of Blizzard, but another studio, a big mistake).
I'd just like to see a new franchise. Let those artists create some new stuff.

Ahh, the console MMO market!
It's going to be very tough for them to take market share with all these other console MMO's going so strong!

I always thought Valve should've done this. They are clearly the king of fps on pc right now.

Valve has got better stuff to do then make a MMOFPS, like making a DOTA clone... Hopefully a good one.

Since I like to see behind my character and play on a PC...it's looks like I'll be giving Blizzard's next title a miss. They should also make it fully F2P with MT's for an added "I'm not going to even touch that with a 35 ft poll" effect.

You're passing up a game you don't know a damn thing about?

And you think I should play a game that I don't know anything about?
To answer your question though, right now as it stands...if these rumors are to be true about this game, then it's not something I wish to play. Is that a problem?
