Warhammer 40k MMO to be fully revealed this summer
Filed under: Sci-fi, Events, real-world, New titles, News items, Warhammer 40k
Have you been looking forward to the Warhammer 40K MMO for what feels like forever? The people at THQ have been offering up small pieces of information since they announced the game a few years ago -- last April we finally got a release year of 2012, and just in December we were given some beautiful concept art.
Now we've been given even better news. THQ plans to "fully unveil" Warhammer 40K this summer at E3. The Electronic Entertainment Expo will be at the Los Angeles Convention Center this year, from June 15th-17th, and if you were thinking of attending, this is a very good reason to hop off the fence.
THQ has kept the game largely under wraps for now, but the developers are pretty excited. Team member Joe Madureira promises large scale combat, tons of customization, and great-looking characters.
June suddenly seems a lot farther away, but we'll keep a close eye out for more news on the game until then!

WTB Time Machine.
I can not wait for more news on this. Although if there are no Eldar playable classes I will cry.
It is the only race I liked in the 40k world.

If there's no TAU playable class, I won't buy. I'm sick of the Space Commies getting shoe-horned into a 3rd sequel of a 6 year old game.
Tau need to be in DoW2.
Tau need to be in the WH40K MMO, and not as a pack of mobs to grind through.

I agree. More races than marines would be good. Different types of Human would be good too ie. Sister Of Battle, Guardsman, Inquisitor ect.
The Eldar and Tau would make great playable races, but I'm not sure how some of the "mindless" races like Tyrandis or Necrons could be anything but mobs. There is a Warhammer40k RPG called Dark Heresy, and you can only be humans. It kinda gets tiresome after awhile.
My favorite army is Chaos Space Marines, but i have the feeling that wont happen.

For Tyranids, it would be simple... have it work like a pet class... you play as a Hive Tyrant or Tyranid Prime, or one of the other "Higher" synapse creatures that have a degree of autonomy and intellect, and you can command lesser Tyranids like termagaunts and raveners, etc.
Higher levels would give ya higher "summons" (Who wouldn't want to summon a Trygon or a Mawloc?)

I''ll remain cautiously optimistic. I love Warhammer 40k, but most studios these days don't seem to be willing to invest the necessary effort into creating an MMO to high standards.
I'd love to be proved wrong by them though!

Nice to see a dev studio keep things quiet about their MMO for a change. Here's hoping that THQ takes all the time they need to make this a great game.

Really? I think they are starting to release information far too early. Since we don't have a release date in 2012 we have to assume its near the Holidays. So it will be a full 2 years of hype and over hype until release.
SWTOR is doing the exact same thing(Announced Oct 2008, releasing spring 2011 so a little over 2 years)
WAR was only in development for 3 years and didn't start hyping until a year into development.
2 years is a long time to keep hyping something and giving information out. I think FFXIV did it right. They were quiet then suddenly popped up and then beta was starting. 1 year-1.5 years is the most I think you can really hype a game before it starts to fade, look at SWTOR. That community took a huge blow when spring 2011 was given.

Yeah I could have done with THQ staying silent until mid-2011. I'm keen to hear more about this game, but it's too early for solid info about gameplay and I'm really sick of MMOs being overhyped too soon - most can't deliver on their hype - and things can change in development/beta, so early hype rarely reflects the launch game that well.
I just pray that this will be an MMOFPS, because there is no way that the ploddingly slow stat-based gameplay of "traditional" MMOs like WoW/EverQuest could ever properly represent combat in the WH40K universe (unless they make it an MMORTS, and as much as I like RTS games I hope they don't) - this needs to be more like Planetside, based mainly on player skill and with character levels/skills adding flexibility more than power - but with added depth and maybe some PvE.
Please THQ give us a 6-way multi-planet conflict (with each planet having multiple battlefields/territories) between the Imperium (Marines/Battle-Sisters & Imperial Guard), Chaos Marines, Eldar, Orks, Dark Eldar and Tau - with Necrons and Tyranids as NPCs who get inflicted on whichever two factions are most populous and/or leading the overall conflict (as a balancing mechanism).

Going to be interesting to see how they balance a Space Marine against an Ork and keep within the lore.

lets hope it's not WoW with robots.

Chances are it'd be more Warhammer Online with robots.
I'd still play it.

Please don't start with the comparrisons to warharmmer. It's a different company and a different IP.
NekoDaimyo said on 3:25PM 2-04-2010
It... it really isn't THAT different of an IP.

If Joe Madureira is doing the designs for this MMO then it will look really really good. I loved his artwork from the X-Men and his own Battlechasers comics. Too bad he never finished that series, so I hope this game will get finished 2012.

Didn't you know? Pages from Battlechasers #10 are hidden in Darksiders.
Really!

Sounds cool! Yet at the same time, I honestly wish that MMO developers would keep their work completely secret until they are ready for beta.
The reason? Well, the hype created is fun, but I really loose interest when that hype lasts for months and years. Sometimes the forever-wait plus the setbacks of release just start to drain my interest in the game as oppose to capture me.
If a cool game released a flurry of news over a month or so during an unexpected open beta phase, oh man. I would be so caught up in the marketing that I know my common sense would be lost and I would be pre-ordering in a heartbeat.
So far, I think ArenaNet is doing it right with Guild Wars 2. Just when people were doubting the game would even be made, they released a couple trailers just to get our attention back. But all the secrets are still close to their chest. There is something to be said for actually being surprised by a game and getting to play it.
Oh! Like Apple. Most of the time they announce a product that you can buy in a very short time-frame. It totally works for them.

Same here. There are a few games I've been waiting for so long, I'm almost sick of them already. I'm looking at you, The Secret World. I really wish people would wait longer to release info if they don't plan on releasing the game for a few YEARS. There's only so much suspense and hype I can take!

Another failed MMO theme. Orcs in space? Yeah, the PNP version sucked and so will this game. While they are at it, why don't they do bloodbowl? This game will do about as good as PoTBS. I think the groups making MMOs these days are just a bunch of clueless bufoons.
