City of Heroes preparing for double XP and reactivation weekend
Filed under: Super-hero, City of Heroes, Events, in-game, News items
If you're a City of Heroes player who is thinking of rolling a new character, or even if you have an alt that you're leveling up, you're going to be very happy with what the game has on the way.
Beginning March 4th, players will receive double XP, Influence, and Infamy for a three day stretch. It's an even better deal if you've pre-purchased Going Rogue, you'll be leveling twice as fast and wielding the Dual Pistols power set.
What about those City of Heroes players who have let their subscriptions expire, and are looking at the offer and thinking "well, too bad for me"? Nope, you're invited too. The double XP weekend is also Account Reactivation weekend, so you will be able to reactivate your account free of charge.
All of the information can be found here. So those of you with inactive accounts, download the client to be ready for the weekend. The rest of you, get ready to either dust off the alts or start planning a costume for a brand new character!

I think I may check out my old characters and see what they've done with the game.

Anytime Jack, glad I can appease the highest standards set by yourself for comments on a blog about MMOs.

Umm, jack, was it really necessary to attack him like that?

'Jack' is a spambot. Check its other posts.

Well...they didn't have to do this for me. All the shenanigans over at Champions eventually drove me back to CoX. I've never enjoyed this game more. :)

I'll stick with Champions. It may be behind in progress (given that "City of" has several years of development on Champions) but I still like the newer engine and core design of Champions. Given more development time Champions will be much better than the "City of".
That and I have a life sub I refuse to admit was a bad decision by going back to "City of" :p

Ignoring all the stuff going on with CO, this is a great idea. And is sneaky. Very sneaky. DoubleXP, free playtime for old players, plus a preview of Dual Pistols? Sheesh! If only every DoubleXP weekend was so good!
@Zan
I think CO has great potential, and think/hope that within a year from now you'll have a lifetime sub to a fantastic game. Its not my cup of tea, but I think they've got a good foundation for the future. Going back to COH, however, is not admitting you made a bad decision, its just saying, "I want to play this right now!", that's all :)

I actually played CoX this past weekend for the first time in a while and was really surprised how crowded my server still felt.
I don't know if it was from playing recent games with limited instance caps, but I definitely felt like I was in a world with other players and not a small box with a few people who never use or look at their chat window.

One of my biggest beefs with MMOs is the chat window. It is interesting how Ultima Online only had overhead chat bubbles. Of course, they made it "realistic" where you could only hear people nearby and you could whisper too, where people only heard a tile or two away.
This ended up forcing people to use 3rd party apps for long-distance chat.
Then Everquest brought back the chat window, and it was chat window only for a long time. CoX might have been the one that brought back overhead chat bubbles for local and team chat.
What I find annoying is that there has been no attempt to improve this method of communication. The more action the game is, the more the chat window fails to work. If some of the interface communication barriers were removed, I think MMOs might become more social. In the case of Champions, it is almost annoying to read their chat window for some reason.

I spend a fair amount of time in City customizing my chat boxes so I only see what I want to see. I set up different tabs for different communities, and keep my PMs in a different window entirely.

This is going to be cool. Thanks so much to Massively for covering CoX.
And to me, CO seems way too derivative of CoX (except CO is a scaled down, less-polished version in nearly every way). I didn't "go back to" CoX, I fled CO and barreled back to CoX as fast as I could. ;)

Yeah, I won't ever be going back to CoX. I used to love this game. Now everyone stands around in a room looking for a team and a mission that has no story but that can get them 3 levels in 20 minutes. Oh, wait, double xp will get them 6 - my bad. Player generated content ruined the Paragon City, in my opinion, and several years of wonderfully developed story lines went right out the window.

Do you mean Architect farming? That's been nerfed for a long time now. What with the new SK system, people are doing stuff in the world again.

Yeah. Being able to earn XP with people regardless of level has made doing mission arcs fun again. Not just finding the nearest grind train.
