One Shots: Ride on
Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Lord of the Rings Online, One Shots
Sometimes we get screenshots that almost look like they could be paintings. Such is definitely the case with this lovely, frosty screenshot from Lord of the Rings Online that was sent in to us by Ultherond (aka Alanc) from the Laurelin (EU) server. The smaller image above really loses the fine detail going on in the foreground, which is where the story lies:
I was out traveling the snowy wastes of Forochel, hunting Gauredain for my deeds, when I came across a true sight to behold. Under a beautiful, clear sky, which is as rare as it gets in a land plagued by the heaviest of snow storms, two lone riders are making for the sun setting past the mountains.
Have you captured a beautiful screenshot of your favorite game? If so, we'd love to see it. All you have to do is to email it to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your name, the name of the game, and a brief description. We'll post it out here and give you the credit.

I am on the fence about my current MMO and every once in a while something like this makes me re-think giving up on LOTRO.

When I saw that, I thought 'What game could that be? It looks like a photo or a painting...'
Woah.

This, imho, is what makes LoTRO stand sooo, sooo far above the rest of the MMORPG crowd (yes, including WoW) - not because of the pure beauty of that shot, but because of what it *implies*. That one picture paints a thousand blogs about the type of experience LoTRO offers. Awesome.

My bf and I are leveling in Forochel, in LOTRO currently. Weird.
*Squints at pic to see if thats me*
LOTRO has some really nice landscape. I could forget gaming (almost) completely and just sit in some of the zones, with some zen-like music going and relax. Evendim was really a favorite. Beautiful ruins, fantastic lakes, large stones covered in moss set against blue skys with slow drifting white clouds.
Strange that a game could make me look foward to spring/summer, but whenever I go through that zone, I get a strange urge for a nature walk. :P

I recently went for a free trial (I played LOTRO during open beta, but was sucked into WoW at the time). Seems like I may have missed out on some really good PVE here. I'm actually thinking on grabbing a lifetime membership, even though I am extremely late to the party......thanks for the screenshot!

One of the beauties of LOTRO is that even if you start now, you really aren't that far behind. I just recently jumped back on a level 30 alt I haven't played in a really long time, and I see more people leveling up than I did on my main initially.

That really is both a great screenshot and a real showcase of the great work done on the outdoor environments in Lotro.
You really captured the spirit of Lotro, Ultherond, and likely that 'feeling' a lot of us would like MMO's to return to at the same time I'd say.
That's worthy of enlarging and framing; not only for enjoying, but to be able to tell visitors it's a screenshot from a game.
=)

Now if only the character models and animations would be as awesome as the scenery... Alas, that is not the case :(

Can you show samples of what you're seeing? Compared to which other games? I've heard a lot of complaints about the character models but I just don't see it -- I think they look a lot better than what is in other games. The animations, though slower than other games is much more realistic. The patch before SoM sped up some of the animations.

Thanks for this screenshot, the sense of perspective is amazing.
On maximum graphic settings including DX10 there's no doubt in my mind that LoTRO raises the bar so far as MMO graphics are concerned. AoC is the only other MMO that can touch it, both are quite stunning especially for long-distance views. I never understand why people knock the animations/character models in LoTRO, they seem fine to me.

Yeah world designers in LOTRO are like gods. They almost are as good as my imagination, though they are bound by technical limits ;)
If only same case was with gameplay...

Forochel is one of the most beautiful landscapes in any game.

This is what Lotro needs more. Not more stinking skirmishes...
Less skirmishes and more content, please!
