Cinemassively: The Covenant guild in Age of Conan

Filed under: Video, Age of Conan, Cinemassively, Machinima

The Covenant, a 350-members-and-growing guild on the European Age of Conan server, Dagon, released this video to recruit members. Viewers be warned, this short clip contains some heavy violence, but that's to be expected in AoC. It also gives us a taste of how cinematic the game is shaping up to be. From the sweeping views to the heart-pumping gameplay, we predict that it's just a matter of time before the awesome machinima comes pouring in.

Cinemassively: Being Virtual

Filed under: Video, Cinemassively, Virtual worlds

Davey Winder wants the world to know that virtual interactions are about more than just business. They're about contact with other humans, finding love, or seeking escape from a disability. While this video may not provide the answers that his book does, it highlights the interesting misconceptions that people may have.

When Davey was struck by a brain virus, he lost everything that meant something to him. Looking for solace, he discovered text-based online communities. He recently wrote a book, Being Virtual, that looks into the personal interactions centered around virtual worlds. In doing so, he answers a lot of questions that may come from having a virtual life, such as identity issues and embarrassment.

There's a new spy in town. 007KIN is kicking buttocks and taking names as he searches for answers. Personally, we think that a Moonkin makes a much more formidable opponent than James Bond could ever hope to be.

VoodooRay did a great job of inserting the World of Warcraft model-viewed character into the action. This isn't the first time he's Moonkin'd a movie, though. His classics include 300 Moonkins, Enter the Moonkin, and The Da Moonkin Code!

Cinemassively: Teaser for Fate, or the Story of Morgan Ladimore

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Video, Cinemassively, Machinima

If Durast's goal with his upcoming machinima, Fate - The Story of Morgan Ladimore, is to tug at our heartstrings, it sounds like it may work. It's hard to tell from the teaser, but the story, which is based around a World of Warcraft questline, is quite gripping. It centers around a soldier, Morgan Ladimore, that believed he lost his family, and was driven to madness. After committing suicide, he was doomed to roam Raven Hill, forever suffering and eternally avenging.

Filed under: Video, Second Life, Free-to-play, Cinemassively, Machinima

MarkTwain White has released the first part of his three-part tour series of the SLRFL08 sims. The theme, Heroes, was put to good use. There were builds dealing with superheroes, ancient lore, and everything in between.

MarkTwain, the proprietor of the Holly Kai Golf Club, was able to capture the hard work and dedication that went into this event, which ran over the weekend for a full 24 hours. For those that missed it, the builds will be up until the end of today, at which point Linden Lab will reclaim the land. Go check them out before it's too late!

Cinemassively: Arithmomania

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Video, Cinemassively, Machinima

Galen Maly, better known as Yume in the World of Warcraft machinima world, has created some of the most popular exploration videos on his platform of choice. Arithmomania, a video backed with a Dogzilla soundtrack, is easily the most known, though, topping many favorites lists. It will not only get your heart pumping, it will inspire you with the different transitions and mass text effects, which he has made available. However, YouTube does not do this video justice. Be sure to check out the high-quality download!

Cinemassively: Walking the SLRFL track in real life

Filed under: Video, Second Life, Cinemassively, Machinima

Over a year and a half ago, Moriash Moreau, then a team member of McDunnough's Relay Gang for the Second Life Relay for Life, created a contraption that would let him walk virtually using his real body. Channeling MacGyver, he used a treadmill, a butchered USB keyboard, and assorted spare parts to enable him to participate in a whole new way! He even outlined the steps from start to finish on his website. Set to music by Torley Linden, he documented his test journey using popular sims throughout the grid to make sure that his method worked properly. In the end, he walked a whopping 23 miles, or 84 kilometers in Second Life!

With SLRFL08 coming to a close, we'll have some interviews and statistics available to you soon, so stay tuned!

SLRFL08: Live music and a telethon

Filed under: News items, Second Life

The Second Life Cable Network is broadcasting programming live from SLRFL08. They began at 10am PST and will continue until 10pm PST. You can teleport to the Heroes 28 sim to check out their studio, or visit their website for a live stream of the events. It is also available on the 40,000 TV sets in-world that feature their channels.

In addition to the telethon, there is a full day of live music going on in four different Relay sims -- Shea Stadium, New Orleans, Sci-fi, and Robinson Crusoe. There are so many people performing that the schedule is actually broken down into a complicated table, so we'll just link to it!

Stay tuned for a look at activities, as well as interviews, and other exciting things as the Relay continues until 10am PST tomorrow!

SLRFL08: Opening ceremony and schedule

Filed under: News items, Second Life

Emotions were high as Trader1 Whiplash, the "voice of Relay" and DJ of T1 Radio, introduced Relay chair Fayandria Foley and American Cancer Society representative Randal Moss to the audience. Over 1,000 residents gathered in the 35 sims to listen to the audio. During the ceremony, they outlined the live music portion and some of the activities, which we've detailed for you below.

After that, a teary Trader1 passed the microphone over to Nuala Maracas to start off the Survivor/Caregiver Lap. Residents were asked to line up along the sidewalks and wave their flags in support of those who have survived cancer. After that, teams took to the track to bring in SLRFL08. Next up is the "EVERYONE on the track" Lap at 1:00 PM PST. The celebration starts in the Heroes 1 sim.

Check out the full lap schedule after the jump ...

Cinemassively: Second Life Relay for Life starts today!

Filed under: Real life, Video, Events, real-world, Events, in-game, Second Life, Free-to-play, Cinemassively, Machinima

(Disclosure: I am far from an innocent bystander in covering this event. This Survivor Lap video was created by me last year for the now defunct Second Life Insider. I was a team captain last year, and this year I produced an as yet unreleased 17-minute documentary for American Cancer Society on the event.)

The largest event in Second Life history will kick off today. In the four years that Relay for Life has been fundraising in SL, they have raised over $333,000 USD, of which $167,000 USD of it came from this year. The sims open up in just 25 minutes, at 10:00 AM PST, with activities going on frequently for the next 25 hours. We'll be providing you up-to-date coverage on the event, including things to do and special moments, throughout the day! To participate, visit the Heroes 1 sim.

Cinemassively: The Future of Virtual Worlds

Filed under: Video, Second Life, Free-to-play, Cinemassively, Machinima, Virtual worlds, Lively

Forget for a minute that this is an advertisement for the virtual worlds development company, Millions of Us. It's also a great video that discusses the future of these emerging platforms. Narrated by Reuben Steiger, the CEO of MoU, we're taken on a journey through the three major past, present, and future developments in virtual worlds this year. From Sony's Home, to Google Lively, all the way to in-browser worlds embedded on your Facebook pages, the road ahead is pretty exciting!

Cinemassively: Silversun

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Video, Cinemassively, Machinima

Legs, one of a handful of extremely talented female World of Warcraft machinimators, has been working hard on honing her craft. In the six months that she's been releasing machinima, half of her library of six films have been recommended on Warcraftmovies.com! Her latest, Silversun, is a whimsical adventure told from a child's point of view. Originally created to enter into Blizzard's Worldwide Invitational machinima contest, she discovered too late that they weren't allowing Swiss entries.

Cinemassively: Gibson Island in Second Life

Filed under: Video, Events, in-game, Second Life, Free-to-play, Cinemassively, Machinima, Virtual worlds

Earth Primbee, Cypress Rosewood, and the Gibson Guitar company created a video to let Second Life residents know that they're ready to rock. Tateru Nino recently wrote about Gibson's entry into the virtual world that will take place today on their island. While most companies are fleeing SL in droves, it seems as if Gibson didn't get the memo, as they roll out a 12-hour premiere and showcase their guitars. It's nice to see a company that doesn't get intimidated by a little negative backlash!

Cinemassively: The Demise

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Video, Cinemassively, Machinima

This is the tale of a machinimator and one of the most epic World of Warcraft machinimas made today. The Demise is a story of forbidden love that will bring tears to your eyes as you realize what happened. Created by Surgee, for Blizzard's Worldwide Invitational machinima contest, he painstakingly rendered it on his old machine.

Surgee silently vowed to himself that he would quit making machinima if he didn't win the top prize of a new computer. It was getting to be too difficult and time-consuming on his old one. Alas, the grand prize went to Olibith, for a movie about a woman's chest. However, The Demise will serve as a memory of the great contribution that he gave to WoW machinima!

Cinemassively: Making shirts for Second Life in ArtRage

Filed under: Video, Tips and tricks, Second Life, Free-to-play, Cinemassively, Machinima, Education, Virtual worlds

Second Life's new user experience can be baffling, but the worst part happens after the resident gets used to the virtual world. When it comes time to create something, the templates required are tough to master. While many residents, including this blogger, hung up their Wacoms, Torley Linden has an instructional video that just might help us out!

Using ArtRage, a program that offers both free and paid versions, Torley shows us how to use the tools. Afterwards, he explains tracing and preparing the image for upload in SL. At almost 17 minutes, you're walked through every step of the process. Soon we'll all be clothing makers!
