Massively goes to Dragon*Con: Cryptic Studios Q&A

Filed under: Super-hero, Events, real-world, Game mechanics, MMO industry, New titles, Consoles, Massively Event Coverage, Champions Online

Cryptic Studios was on-hand at this year's Dragon*Con, where they held a Q&A session regarding all things Champions Online. What follows is as much of the event as could be transcribed from the audio we brought back with us. This writeup was completed based on audio with some garbled sections. Some details may be glossed over as a result. Without further ado:

Cryptic Studios is Champions Online. This is not a product that we licensed. We actually partnered with them and purchased the intellectual property. So when all the additional supplements come out for the Champions pen and paper game, they're actually coming out with our cooperation. It's kind of jointly being developed. Cryptic Studios is now the owner of the Champions IP.

Raph Koster on the Metaplace idea

Filed under: Business models, MMO industry, New titles, MetaPlace, Browser, Academic, Education

After a recent question from a Metaplace forum member last month, Raph Koster decided to sit down and explain to us just where exactly the idea for Metaplace was born and how it has evolved into what it is today.

He begins by explaining his MUD roots and how much that influenced him in the multiplayer online space. He explains that he'd had ideas for web-based sandbox worlds ever since then and had frequently toyed with the idea to create his vision, but finances and other limitations restricted that. Now that he has the resources, this vision he's had for so long can finally be put into action with a team of professionals, instead of just him working on it in his spare bedroom. It's an inspiring little story and certainly worth a read if you're interested in Raph's work or the potential future of MMOs in general.

Mythic Entertainment's Mark Jacobs has started blogging

Filed under: Fantasy, MMO industry, Warhammer Online, Opinion

When you think of Warhammer bloggers, folks like Syp, Keen, and the guys at the Greenskin probably come to mind first. Then you'd probably think of Josh Drescher and Paul Barnett, two of the WAR team heads who have longstanding blogs themselves. Just recently added to the ranks of Warhammer bloggers is none other than Mythic's head honcho himself, Mr. Mark Jacobs. Jacobs has hung out his shingle at a site entitled Online Games Are a Niche Market, a reference to a bad conversation he had with AOL execs back in the day. Hard to believe AOL could be shortsighted about anything.

He's already put up several interesting posts, which we think are well worth checking out. He reiterates and expands on some of the comments he made in his MTV article when discussing the role of WAR's success or failure in the market. He also directly answers questions from commenters in not one but two posts. It's great to see a busy guy like Mark getting into the trenches to address fan questions; perhaps you've got one for him as well?

One Shots: Orgrimmar by moonlight

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Screenshots, One Shots

Having just come back from Dragon*Con, we can say we met a huge number of World of Warcraft players, and we had a blast getting to know the overall MMO community out there. While there are several posts coming (and yes, even the D*C Blizzard "serenade" video) we thought we'd kick it off with this gorgeous World of Warcraft screenshot that was sent in to us here by Khaldun from Maelstrom. He added that he hoped his shot would... finish on the front page of [our] amazing blog, which [he] reads daily! As you wish, Khaldun! Thanks for sending in such a great night shot of the Horde's capital city.

Do you play WoW and love to show it off? Do you hate WoW and would like to show us just why the game you play rules? Are you largely indifferent to WoW, but have lots of cool screenshots? Whatever your reason, we want your screens! Just send those in to us here at oneshots AT massively.com along with a quick description and your name. Easy, no?

Ask Cryptic explains how Star Trek Online will handle canon

Filed under: Sci-fi, Forums, Game mechanics, Lore, New titles, PvP, Star Trek Online, Races, Roleplaying

The latest Ask Cryptic focusing on Star Trek Online addresses a number of questions sci-fi fans have about where the IP is heading in the MMO space. Not surprisingly, many of the questions asked of Cryptic deal with how well they'll adhere to Star Trek canon.

The Cryptic Studios devs were asked about how they would handle the iconic story and characters of Star Trek, namely with voiceovers and cut scenes. The devs state that Star Trek Online avoids issues of tampering with Trekkie canon by setting the game in 2409, a good 30 years after Star Trek: Nemesis and Star Trek: Voyager. So while some of the locales familiar to Star Trek fans will be present in the game, players shouldn't expect to bump into any (or many) familiar faces.

Star Wars Galaxies producer says Hoth is coming next month!

Filed under: Sci-fi, Star Wars Galaxies

In an open letter to the players of Star Wars Galaxies, producer for the title Christopher "Dotanuki" Field gave fans a heads up on what's coming down the pipe in the next six months or so. He lays out a timeline for upcoming patches, revealing that the Halloween event called "The Galactic Moon Festival" as well as The Battle of Echo Base will be released sometime next month! There will be a new Life Day event, along with the first expansion to the Champions of the Force game, sometime during the winter months. Beyond that, the next professions to see updates and patches will be Politicians and Spies, followed by Domestics/Structural Traders.

He also notes that they are moving ahead full-force on a plan to deal with the game's many servers with relatively low populations. SWG players have been long asking for a solution in the form of server merges; as we've discussed before, the unique topography of the game's cities and planets makes that difficult. Field states in his letter that "We met with Marketing yesterday to discuss the timeframe of the program as well as the announcement timeframe. All the details are being finalized now. DevH is still hard at work on his tasks." He has no further specifics to offer, but notes that their interactions with marketing mean an announcement will be coming sooner rather than later.

The political machinations of EVE Online

Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Economy, Events, in-game, Game mechanics, Guilds, MMO industry, PvP, Endgame, News items, Politics, Roleplaying

Game journalist and EVE Online player Jim Rossignol has been coming to grips with the idea of conflict in EVE, in a series of articles written for Eurogamer. Rossignol began by looking at "the basic principles of killing people" and progressing to the large scale conflicts between alliances.

This week, Rossignol goes a step further by looking at the politics at the heart of much of the large-scale conflict in EVE Online, and how despite all the freedom the developers give players, it was inevitable that power blocs of players would be at each other's throats. "Players plus resources, plus more players, equals conflict. That's the basic mathematics that powers EVE Online. And it's been working for over five years now," Rossignol says.

Warhammer preview weekend+ patch notes

Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Patches, Previews, Warhammer Online

While the full 4.1 patch notes are still under NDA, the notes for this weekend's preview delve into Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning are free and clear for everyone to enjoy. And they're still pretty freaking huge. The full and mind-blowing notes are available after the cut, but here are some highlights:
- You can now only belong to one faction on a given Realm. Picking Destruction or Order with your first character is now a permanent choice.
- Every single class has received an overhaul, with the 'turret' classes (Engineer and Magus) and the Squig Herder getting the most love.
- Quests and Public Quests have received a few tweaks thanks to Beta feedback.
- Auction Houses and personal banks have been added to the game for the first time!

For every gruesome detail, read on below the cut.

Hello Kitty Online: gazing into horror

Filed under: Video, New titles, Previews, Casual, Hello Kitty Online, Kids

We write about Chaos Chosen freaks wreaking havoc on the RvR battlefield. We've been known to write about interstellar mercenaries and anarchists publicly executing enemies of freedom. Things like these make the job fun.

But this... is seriously over the top. Three videos, all lined up below the cut. You may be able to handle one. Some of you may be able to take two. But three -- we don't think you can do it. In fact we know you can't. These clips are NSFW. Be advised.

Gamespy's MMO column returns with a look at Battlefield Heroes

Filed under: Betas, MMO industry, New titles, Free-to-play, MMOFPS

Gamespy's excellent ongoing MMO column OnLife has been regrettably on hiatus for some time, but it looks like it is back with a vengeance. Its first column back in the saddle is all about the online free-to-play FPS Battlefield Heroes. While not technically an MMO, author Miguel Lopez notes numerous similarities between Heroes and high-end PvP in MMOs. As he observes, the fact that he can even make these comparisons is bad news for the folks at DICE. The stated purpose of the stylized online shooter has been to offer a simple, fun, low-cost experience for FPS players. Instead, even in the game's extended Beta, the game is already beginning to resemble World of Warcraft's sometimes-arcane PvP build strategy game.

Says Lopez, "I'll admit that much of what makes me want to play Heroes' is its promise of varied abilities, full of potential for synergy and experimentation. But I hope that its designers will tread thoughtfully when it comes to implementing them." Check out the article for his full assessment of the game, then click below the cut for a look at the hyper-cartoony graphics and strange sense of humor found in Battlefield Heroes.

Anti-Aliased: I should market fanboi pesticide

Filed under: Culture, Opinion, Humor, Anti-Aliased

This week's column is going to be a little different than the norm I usually cover, but it still falls into that which I love and dedicate my craft to -- the analysis of MMO culture. And who better to analyze than the bane of a game's existence, the fanboi!

They're right, you're wrong. Their opinion is obviously the best opinion on the planet, even if it consists of "this gaem is teh rox, ur dumb and obviuosly a gey retard." (It always fascinates me how they can screw up a word like gay, but can somehow gain the coherence to spell retard correctly.) They clog up the message boards by defending everything the developer does, right down to eating an egg sandwich during their hour long lunch breaks.

They probably mean well and want their game of choice to succeed, but they end up doing more damage to the community at large than good. So let's dedicate this column to the fanboi and how much they screw things up for everyone.

Guild Wars players get two new companions

Filed under: Fantasy, Guild Wars, Events, in-game, Game mechanics, PvE

As we mentioned a few weeks ago, a new hero was to emerge on the Guild Wars scene for players who either bought the new Guild Wars Trilogy set or already had all three GW campaigns on their active account. Well, the time has arrived and M.O.X. the golem is ready for action! His primary profession is Dervish, and he is touted as being the largest hero in the game. Not only that, but in true Dervish fashion, he can change into five different forms. As most other heroes, M.O.X. needs a quest to unlock him, and he can be found just outside the port cities of Lion's Arch, Kaineng Center and Kamadan.

In addition to M.O.X., we're also surprised with another NPC companion. The Fire Imp is considered your very own leveling buddy which is available only to players below level 20. He can only join you for 60 minutes at a time, and has certain other restrictions to make him more of a special sidekick than a constant companion. You can check out the website for more detailed information on acquiring these special allies, including the lore-riffic backstory on M.O.X. and a video of one of his Dervish form transformations.

EVE Online's answer to GPS

Filed under: Sci-fi, Galleries, EVE Online, Game mechanics, Tips and tricks, News items, Maps

EVE Online is a vast setting where all players interact in one galaxy. While other MMOs are sharded across different servers, some with different locales, EVE places all of its players together. Its implementation ensures that many servers seem to be just one from the perspective of any pilot flying in New Eden. However, given the daunting size of EVE's explorable environment, there have been some players who took it upon themselves to map the known universe and release their findings as a resource for other pilots. Shayne Smart, aka Serenity Steele, is one such player. He's been getting some media attention in recent months as Vice-Chairman of the Council of Stellar Management (CSM). Beyond his duties on the CSM, Smart is also well-known to many players as the creator of EVE Strategic Maps, a spiral bound collection of star charts which some fans of the game find indispensable.

You would think Smart would find mapping out 5000 solar systems (each with its own myriad planets, moons, stations, and other resources) a feat hard to top. But what Smart's done is found a way to use the in-game browser in the EVE client to act as a sort of GPS, tracking your position as you jump from one solar system to the next, and allowing you to better see your relative position in the galaxy as part of your overview. The cartographer's latest 'minimap' effort is presently 2-D only and in beta, though is well worth a look and quite simple to use. Click the gallery below for Shayne Smart's instructions on how to use the free 2D minimap within your in-game browser.

The Daily Grind: What is your MMO soundtrack?

Filed under: Culture, MMO industry, The Daily Grind

We know that you MMO playing folks tend not to listen to the in-game music (which this blogger thinks is a real shame), but you have to be listening to something while you play. Dead silence is pretty darn boring. So, we're wondering what you do to amuse yourself while you're in-game. This blogger splits his time pretty evenly between podcasts and shows from Hulu.com when he does his daily quests. The Daily Show and the Isle of Quel'Danas go hand in hand like peanut butter and jelly.

Do you listen to nerd-core? Maybe some nice acapella? What do you listen to when you're doing your questing thing? What's blaring over the guild chat when you take down raid bosses? What is your personal MMO soundtrack?

Linden Lab to license network advertisers in Second Life

Filed under: Culture, Economy, News items, Second Life, Virtual worlds

Jack Linden has dropped the next shoe on mainland policy changes in Second Life, while we're expecting plenty more shoes, this one at least seems to have been widely welcomed, increasing the overall crack-down on what are known colloquially as ad-farms.

The short form is 'Network advertising (Ad Farming) will no longer be permitted on the Linden Mainland unless you have a written agreement with Linden Lab (essentially meaning a license to advertise)', writes Jack. There's additional explanations and caveats to that, though. The last policy post on ad-farms was certainly considerably deficient and seemed to cause more problems than it solved.

Users who are are operating advertising networks that are infringing this policy have until 1 October 2008 to obtain a license and comply with the terms of that license, or to remove their content. Jack does not say what will occur otherwise, but content-removal and account-sanctions are the safe bet.

Are you a part of the most widely-known collaborative virtual environment or keeping a close eye on it? Massively's Second Life coverage keeps you in the loop.
