Betawatch: July 23 - 30, 2010

Filed under: Betas, Massively meta, Betawatch

Welcome to Betawatch, Massively's weekly report on the state of MMO betas. In each installment, we'll report everything from the latest open betas, closed betas and even alphas in one convenient place. Plus, we'll make sure to include as much info on each game's current status, including projected release dates (if known) and links to the sign-up forms to get yourself into that beta you've been seeking.

It's another relatively quiet week in Betawatch, but there are a few changes. The newest addition to our closed beta list is Ministry of War. We bid farewell to a member of the open beta list, as Need For Speed World has zoomed away (sorry) from the Betawatch list for a July 27th launch. Heroes of Three Kingdoms has moved to open beta, so if you've been wanting to check it out, visit the open beta page to sign up. We've also learned that LOCO will be entering open beta on August 3rd, in between Betawatch editions, so stay tuned for more on that one!

There are two newcomers to our closed beta list this week.

DC Universe Online is the first new addition to Betawatch. Closed beta signups began on the 19th, and we've been promised a start date for beta testing "very soon." We'll certainly keep an eye out for that date. GamesCampus debuted its "cute but hardcore" Legends of Edda with beta signups. Closed beta for that one is available right away.

It's gimme-a-closed-beta-key week here on Betawatch. Heroes of the Three Kingdoms joins our closed beta list this week, along with a pile of closed beta keys just for you! Visit our beta key giveaway page to try the game for yourself. The folks at newcomer Zentia made a similarly generous offer, so if "epic shrimp versus crab battles" sound like your thing, grab a key for that one too! World of Tanks restocked our supply of closed beta keys as well, so if you missed out the first time, we have another batch.

It's been a busy week for Betawatch, but almost all behind the scenes. You'll notice that the lists are a bit shorter. There are some new additions, and a few things are shuffled around. We've spent some time contacting developers, and trimming and changing the lists. You can expect to see further changes soon, leading to a more accurate and less bulky Betawatch.

In this week's regular Betawatch news, Square Enix announced more beta plans for FFXIV, World of Tanks began its closed beta, and the Martial Empires developers made a surprising announcement about the end of closed beta. Due to some legal restrictions, they'll continue service to Europe, Asia, and North America for the rest of beta, but launch will be Europe only.

We bid farewell to APB this week, as the highly-anticipated game launched with an in-game event with the Massively staff. Martial Empires joined our open beta list and was greeted by some pretty positive comments from those who tried it, as did Need For Speed World, a game that received a similarly warm welcome. World of Tanks is preparing for closed beta in just a matter of days as well. WoW's Cataclysm is in closed beta now, so be sure to check out all the information on our sister site Wow.com. Finally, Vindictus joins our closed beta list.

Fists of Fu and Soul Master joined our closed beta list, and in a surprise move that had the MMO community buzzing, so did Star Wars: The Old Republic. Granted, it seems to be a limited, 2-day closed beta test, but it is a closed beta, and we hope to see more soon.

It's been a very quiet two weeks for Betawatch, thanks to E3. Developers have been scurrying to prepare for and attend the event, so hopefully things will pick back up next week. We did have one big change, however: APB has moved to the open beta list. If you missed the announcement earlier this week, the Key to the City event allows pretty much anyone who wants one to snag a key and check out the beta.

This week in Betawatch the buzz is all about the beta for the upcoming free-to-play reboot of Lord of the Rings Online. Turbine is accepting sign-ups now, and the LotRO beta is expected to begin on June 16th (thanks Nandini for the correction!) Dawntide fans will also be happy to hear that, although it had been delayed from its original May 31st launch, the open beta wasn't postponed indefinitely; instead, it'll begin on June 4th -- that's tonight! Alaplaya's Land of Chaos has just slipped into closed beta; Aeria's Kingdom Heroes jumps from closed to open beta; and we picked up some hints that Final Fantasy XIV's beta might be on the way sooner than we thought.

This week in Betawatch seems to be all about launch plans. Xsyon will be remaining on the Betawatch list a bit longer than planned -- launch has been delayed until August 15th. Fans of Dungeon Fighter Online won't have to wait nearly as long, as Nexon announced the game will release June 9th, and we bid farewell to Craft of Gods after their May 27th launch date.

WWII Online: Battleground Europe joins our open beta list, kicking off this weekend's event with contests and giveaways. Finally, Dawntide fans will be happy to hear that the game has an open beta date of May 31st. Follow along after the jump for the current Betawatch list.

It seems to be either feast or famine with Betawatch these days. After several fairly quiet weeks, our closed beta list has grown by five titles all at once. Hero:108 and familiar title Black Prophecy join the closed beta list, along with Heroes of Might and Magic Online, Kingdom Heroes , and Captains of Dark Tide.

Battle of the Immortals moves to open beta after a very welcome round of changes, and Tian Long Ba Bu opens a European open beta.

Perpetuum -- a sci-fi MMO set on a "faraway planet inhabited by robots" -- is in closed beta. And Digimon, we hardly knew ye -- Digimon Battle has left us for launch followed by our best wishes for success!

Tales of Fantasy moved to the beta list as well, while Tales of Pirates II began alpha testing. Outspark gave us another addition to our closed beta list -- Erebus joined the ranks of CB testers on the 14th.

It was fairly quiet on the Betawatch front this week, but we're preparing for a few upcoming changes in our list. IGG has been busy, announcing the dates for alpha testing of Tales of Pirates II and beta testing for Tales of Fantasy. Look for those to begin next week, as well as the long-awaited closed beta of Battle of the Immortals. That one begins April 13th. If you're interested in available keys for those, now is the time! For now, follow along after the jump for the current list.
