Betawatch: June 26th - July 3rd, 2009

Filed under: Betas, Massively meta, Betawatch

Welcome to Betawatch, Massively's weekly report on the state of MMO betas. In each installment, we'll report everything from the latest open betas, closed betas and even alphas in one convenient place. Plus, we'll make sure to include as much info on each game's current status, including projected release dates (if known) and links to the sign-up forms to get yourself into that beta you've been seeking.

This week saw some major announcements in the realm of MMO betas. First, Champions Online has announced its open beta to begin in August, and Global Agenda should be dropping the closed-beta bomb sometime this month. Ys Online and Red War: Edem's Curse have also announced their own open betas while Ether Saga Online has graduated off the list to 'launched' status. Runes of Magic has also entered closed beta for their French and Spanish versions, continuing their plan of complete world domination. Keep reading after the jump for the complete list of MMOs in their various beta stages.

WoW.com posts coming to Massively

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Massively meta

You may have noticed that Massively doesn't talk very much about World of Warcraft. Even though it's the biggest MMO on the block, our friends at WoW.com cover it so comprehensively that it seems silly for us to duplicate their efforts. But WoW is an MMO too, and it only makes sense to talk about it when there's news. So, from here on out, we'll be co-opting WoW.com's coverage when appropriate. When you see a post on Massively that says "WoW.com" in the upper left (as in the image above) with an unfamiliar writer's name -- that means you're seeing a post directly from our WoW-centric sister site! It should look and feel the same to you, dear reader, but if you head off to comment, be advised that you'll be leaving Massively for WoW.com, where the WoW fans outnumber the rest of us. You'll be able to comment with your existing Massively account, but tread with caution!

Choose my Adventure: Reaching the Crystal Desert

Join me as I brave my way through lands unknown in an adventure dictated entirely by you, the Massively readers! Vote for everything from game played to character creation to ultimate goal and watch it unfold in a series of journals and galleries here on the site. Then, as the ultimate goal is reached, we'll do it all over again in a new game!

When last we saw our Guild Wars heroine, she had just finished exploring every city in Kryta and was off to do the same in the Maguuma Jungle. According to your votes, Moira Zonk the Necromancer headed off to unlock each of the eight cities in the Jungle and ultimately reach the Amnoon Oasis in the Crystal Desert.

Now that she sits at the Oasis, recovering from her travels, she's ready to head off in whatever direction you'd like. Keep reading below for more on her travels and the newest poll where you can vote on where she ventures next.

Welcome, one and all, to the weekend! Is the month almost over already? We checked and double-checked our calendars and it looks like, yes, we've made it to the the last weekend of June. July, and more summer weather are just around the bend -- which makes it seem like a great time to beat the heat by staying indoors and play video games! Here at Massively hope you're all enjoying it, in or out of game. So... what are you up to this weekend? And what is the Massively team up to this weekend? You'll have to read on to find out...

Second Runes of Magic in-game giveaway a bigger success!

Filed under: Fantasy, Contests, Culture, Events, in-game, Free-to-play, Massively meta, Hands-on, Runes of Magic

Last night, Colin and I held an in-game event in Runes of Magic to give away key codes for our Jade Warrior gloves. Not only was this event much more populated than our last RoM in-game event, but we had even more fun meeting players and Massively readers!

As promised, we returned to (or in this case, stayed later at) the server with the most people, and had some great fun just hanging out and chatting with readers of this site, as well as people who have never heard of us before. I know! We were shocked that they exist too! But in total, we gave out 129 codes across the 4 servers. Keep reading below to find out how the numbers broke down per server, and see some great screenshots of the event.

Massively's WonderKing beta key giveaway

Filed under: Betas, Sci-fi, Contests, Events, real-world, New titles, Massively meta, WonderKing

It's Friday, and you know what that means! Well, lately it's meant that we at Massively are giving something away, and today is no exception. Today's key code giveaway will get you into the WonderKing closed beta, and we have a metric ton of these things to give away, courtesy of the fine folks at NDOORS. Of course you remember WonderKing from our recent interview with the game's developers, but now you'll have your chance to actually play the game.

To claim your code, simply leave a comment on this post telling us why you'd like to get into the closed beta. From there you'll get an email with the key code and instructions on how to redeem the code (so make sure your registered email is correct!). All comment entries must be in by Monday, June 29th, 2009 at 9am EST when eligibility will close. Only one prize per person. Good luck!

Anti-Aliased: Virtual worlds as the great equalizer

Filed under: Culture, Opinion, Massively meta, Virtual worlds, Anti-Aliased

So apparently it's gay pride week. I, pretty literally, had absolutely no clue that gay pride week was this week, even though I was lucky enough to speak at Metaplace's Metapride diversity event. Yes, I'm just that oblivious to my surroundings, even when I'm directly participating in them.

I know I don't hide the fact that I'm transgender, but I'm certain that not many people click on my author link here at Massively or really ponder the significance of my @sera_brennan Twitter username. That last sentence is probably the first time many of you long term readers even heard that I was transgender. (Although I remember someone wrote the site once and told them to correct all of the times in my author profile that I was referred to as "she" because it was obviously a typo.)

I owe much to my online escapes, as they aid me in more ways than just providing a fun distraction. They give me the opportunity to appear as I truly feel inside, and let me interact with others without the stigma of being or appearing to be transgendered attached. Beyond just me, however, are hundreds of thousands, or perhaps even millions of individuals who have gained an advantage or some sort of insight thanks to virtual worlds.

Anti-Aliased: Virtual worlds as the great equalizer pt. 2

Filed under: Culture, Opinion, Massively meta, Virtual worlds, Anti-Aliased

Social situations shattered

How many times do we have a young player in our guild who act more like a 30-year-old than the 30-year-olds do? How often do we cross cultural boundaries and forget that we're speaking with someone who might be across the world, in a completely different time zone? To us, they're simply standing in the same room as us, and that puts them in the same place we are.

I know that I don't consciously think about where someone lives or who they really are when I meet them in Second Life or Metaplace. I'm too busy chatting with them about shared interests, because obviously if we're meeting one another while standing inside of a fantasy roleplaying simulation, then we both enjoy fantasy roleplaying.

This is doubly true when I'm playing something like World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy XI. Not only do we now have something in common, but we can be united with our goals as well. You're here to run Nexus? So am I! Let's work together to get through this dungeon. I don't question where you come from, who you are, or how old you are. I may question you if you're not pulling your weight or bringing down the party, but even then I'm going to help you so we can get through the task together.

"In a weird sort of way, virtual worlds humanize us more than the real world is able to.

In a weird sort of way, virtual worlds humanize us more than the real world is able to. While the condition of anonymity can lead to some really destructive individuals, it can also lead to being able to connect to one another without the hangups of social barriers that exist in real life. We can meet individuals who are very different from ourselves, find common ground quickly, and then learn from one another, rather than avoiding those who are different because it scares us.

Beyond that, the experiences we gain from being in virtual worlds do not exist in a vacuum. We take what we learn and we apply it to what we do in everyday life. With enough time, I have no doubt that this too will help melt some of the social stigmas that we carry in real life, simply because we can come in contact with others in a more controlled online environment.

If you want evidence, look at the decreasing age barrier. We let younger kids and teenagers into positions of power and responsibility in our guilds and online activities, and that in turn has slowly lead to more adults listening to kids when they have something to say. We use to completely bar kids from offering advice to us "more knowledgeable, older adults" but it's been slowly changing. While it may not be the only factor that has lead to this, it certainly is one of them.

So I think it's time to give credit where credit is due. Virtual worlds, online games, and the Internet are bringing us together, and many of us are slowly finding out that we're really not so different from one another after all. We're learning about culture, gender, age, and sexuality, and it's certainly about damn time.

Meet us in game for some Runes of Magic item codes

Filed under: Fantasy, Contests, Events, in-game, Free-to-play, Massively meta, Runes of Magic

In our continuous goal to make this Runes of Magic in-game item giveaway more fun than just a simple button-click, we at Massively are thinking up more personal ways to get you your item codes. With so many to give away, it's great to try out new methods throughout the week.

So for tomorrow, we're going to try something in-game. That's right, we're throwing ourselves into the world to personally hand over as many codes as we possibly can! Simply meet up with "Massiveshawn" at the designated times and places listed below, shoot us a PM and we'll respond with an item code. It's that simple! All of these will take place Monday, June 22nd, 2009 at the city of Logar. They will also be in Channel 1 of each server. Here's where you'll find us:

  • Artemis: 6:00pm - 6:30pm EST
  • Osha: 6:30pm - 7:00 EST
  • Govinda: 7:00pm - 7:30pm EST
  • Grimdal: 7:30pm - 8:00pm EST

Is this something we'll do again throughout the week? Possibly, if all goes well. We'll also do these at varying times. You'll still see codes given away on Facebook and Twitter, but we thought we'd try something new for this one. See ya then!

Even more Runes of Magic item codes

Filed under: Fantasy, Contests, Culture, Events, real-world, Events, in-game, Free-to-play, Massively meta, Runes of Magic

Yesterday's Runes of Magic item code giveaway seemed quite a success as the codes were swallowed up quicker than we had imagined. If you follow us on Twitter or Facebook, you've seen even more codes distributed than on this front page. We gave away 460 codes in total yesterday, with 360 of them being through Twitter or Facebook.

Today is only day two of the giveaway as we still have about 9500 of these codes left! As you can imagine, once we get closer to the final days, we'll ramp up the coverage a bit until every last code has been given away. Be sure to also check out this RoM forum thread for more information on other sites throwing similar contests for other pieces of the Jade Warrior Armor set.

WRUP: No one's playing Team Fortress this week? Really?

Another week has passed and left us with another weekend -- all the more time to game in, of course! That means it's time (or past time) to start planning: with only 24 hours to a day and 2 days to a weekend and that pesky need to sleep occasionally... we need a solid plan of attack to maximize our gaming time. So what is Team Massively playing this weekend? Surprisingly enough, not FPS this week! But for the details -- or to let us know what you're playing -- you're going to have to read on.

This has been a fairly busy week for betas, which is great for us! The announcement of Dungeons and Dragons Online going free-to-play led to a new closed beta for that system, while Jade Dynasty moved from closed to open beta. We also added two newcomers to the list: Sudden Attack, which is in closed beta and Monato Esprit, which has reached its final stage of beta testing. With our gigantic beta key giveaway yesterday, Cities XL is now officially in the closed beta ranks. Follow along below for the complete Betawatch list.
