Do you have a deep desire to learn to cast spells and summon monsters in order to save your universe -- all universes -- from the evil machinations of one rogue wizard? Do you pore through Harry Potter books taking notes on the correct way to flick the wand when casting Oculus Repairus?

Yeah, we do, too. If you're lucky enough to be in the Wizard101 beta, you probably are busy dressing up your homonculous and decorating your cauldron, but for those of us still waiting to crack the ol' spell book, KingsIsle has released the documentary "The Making of Wizard 101", in four parts. Videos have to be 2-4 minutes long and no more than 200 mb in size.

The Grand Prize is spectacular: 'A 2009 Model Year Toyota Matrix S model filled with a year subscription to "City of Heroes" and "City of Villains," an XBox 360, a Playstation 3, a Nintendo DS gaming console, and tons of super hero video games!' We know there's an ocean of talent out there, so we're anticipating some stellar entries from the CoX machinima crowd.

Details of the contest, along with full rules and regulations, are available at the official website.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Cinemassively: The Orange Island 100

Filed under: Video, Second Life, Free-to-play, Cinemassively, Machinima

(In order to avoid confusion created by the comments below, we would like to note that there were two fan-made videos of the event, and the one we chose to feature has music created by Orb Gettarr and Spiraling Cycling.)

If you've never been to a popular Second Life event, you wouldn't have experienced the pain of a packed sim. The number of avatars in a single sim usually gets to around 70 or 80 before people start crying of lag, ruths, and missing images. However, those wacky Metaversatility kids took to Orange Island in an attempt to set a record for most avatars in a single snapshot.

Jade Lily was shooting for 100 -- and it wasn't easy. After many minutes, they were able to reach their goal, but it took about two hours without SL before this blogger's computer felt right again!

If you have machinima or movie suggestions from any MMO, please send them to machinima AT massively DOT com, along with any information you might have about them. It's certainly a nice guide, but you might wonder if there is any particular reason that Flying Lab Software is educating their players so -- and of course, there is.

A new series of contests are on the way for PotBS subscribers, and the objective is to come up with some top-notch tutorial videos. The first contest is based around the art of Boarding Combat, and the winning video should be something that can explain to new players exactly how to succeed at this. The creator of the best video will sail away with a GeCube ATI Radeon HD 3650 graphics card, and entry closes on the 30th of June. You can visit the competition page to get all the specific requirements, and begin your career as a pirate teacher.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Warhammer Online takes us to epic places

Filed under: Fantasy, Video, Lore, New titles, Warhammer Online

One fair criticism that many observers of Warhammer Online have levied over the year or so is that from the bits and pieces we've been shown of the game, it looks rather unspectacular. Part of this, we think, is that the lighting elements haven't been fully implemented yet, which gives the game a rather flat, uninteresting look about it. The other reason, it is reasonable to surmise, is that many of the game's most grandiose architectural creations simply haven't been put forward.

In a recent trailer, it seems like many of the games more visually stunning elements are being brought to the fore. While we were still overwhelmed with the sheer volume of brown, the scale of the game is much more evident in this video than in past ones, so the Warhammer faithful among the Massively staff have found cause to be cautiously optimistic.

You might disagree, of course, but make sure to check out the new video after the jump.
Continue reading Warhammer Online takes us to epic places

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Cinemassively: A new appreciation for sound design

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Video, Cinemassively, Machinima

Next time that you watch a machinima, or even a real movie, think about all of the different elements that go into making the film. Most of the time, we see the video and hear the music, but there are also sound effects that enhance the production. Caruu, the sound designer for Acolyte 1.5, has posted a version of the video without music or dialogue, so that the sound effects stand out.

The result is a surprising amount of work that you probably didn't even realize went into the machinima. He's probably best known for his headship of Hogshead Games, the company responsible for putting out pen-and-paper blockbusters like Nobilis and the resurrected Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, as well as eccentric delights such as The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. James regularly shares his thoughts on game design and the industry on his own blog.

James recently made a presentation at Interesting 8, an 'unconference' in London, England, in which he analyzed the World of Warcraft from a scientific perspective. (What is it with the sudden influx of Science into that world, anyway?) Viewed from James's vantage point, aspects of that reality suddenly make sense. Prepare to be amazed at the revelation of Azeroth's actual mass!

The video presentation follows after the break.
Continue reading Brave N00b World: a geophysical survey of the World of Warcraft

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Huxley video expands on non-combat areas

We have to concede, we were not terribly impressed when we got wind of some of Huxley's non-combat areas as long as four months go. Chalk it up to the editing, we suppose, but the ten consecutive minutes of clomping around a barren cityscape left us barely able to keep our heads up. We were much more impressed with the recent cinematic trailer for the game, but it did little in the way of explaining how Huxley was going to change the way we play MMOs.

Well a new video has surfaced with better editing, the removal of that incessant clomping sound of walking on pavement, and some looks at non-static NPCs, shops, and the games' train system. We realize that Huxley's success probably hinges more on whether the FPS action is up to current standards, but for MMO junkies like ourselves, the little things like shops and quest hubs can have a much greater influence on whether we choose to play the game or not. Check out the new video after the jump.
Continue reading Huxley video expands on non-combat areas

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Cinemassively: Draxtor Despres wishes Second Life a Happy Fifth Birthday

Filed under: Video, Second Life, Free-to-play, Cinemassively, Machinima

Draxtor Despres takes us on a sentimental journey through the last year of Second Life. His take on the past year includes making friends and revisiting old ones, being happy that all of the shady real world businesses finally abandoned us instead of pushing their products on us, and hoping that the parents, Linden Lab, will take care of their growing child. The big secret is Sugar Rush, a new casual based MMO romp and stomp with coin collection mixed into the fray. It is the first MMOG from that studio that is intended specifically for North American audiences. While Sugar Rush is free to play, it will sustain development costs via a microtransaction model "item mall" similar to many other free to play MMOs. The game is currently in closed beta and Nexon America is not accepting applications at this time, but we hear it may launch in the very near future.

The development team working on Sugar Rush is based in Vancouver, Canada and includes former Electronic Arts Worldwide Studios Group vice president and creative director Steve Rechtschaffner, as well as studio Klei Entertainment. Headed by Jamie Cheng, Klei Entertainment previously developed and published Eets, a 2D puzzle game for PCs which was later revamped for Xbox 360's Xbox Live Arcade.

It will be interesting to see how Sugar Rush does in North America. MapleStory is unquestionably highly successful. It put Nexon on the global radar and shocked the naysayers when MapleStory earned 29 million dollars in revenue -- not bad for a free to play MMOG! The whole western and eastern MMOG market juxtaposition is fascinating; many have shunned a lot of eastern games in discussing the western market and vice-versa. A video from the closed beta showcasing game play is after the jump. (An event which saw my Shadow Priest finally tip the scales and join the big boys at level 70)

It is also a friendly plug/invitation letting you all know that I will be at the World Wide Invitational this weekend in Paris and if any of you guys are out there then I urge you to come seek me and my camera out and share the love!
Continue reading TurpsterVision : Oh and one more Ding!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Cinemassively: The Interrogation

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Video, Cinemassively, Machinima

Over on our sister site, WoW Insider, Gnomechewer is a crowd favorite. He is known for releasing outstanding, funny, creative World of Warcraft machinimas in increasing frequency. However, we never thought that we'd post two new releases over two sites on the same day because we couldn't keep up with his production schedule!

The Interrogation focuses on an undead scout that is captured by the Scarlet Crusade, and then debriefed. The events in this WoW video take place in the kidnapped Horde's mind while the interrogation is taking place. While Gnomechewer doesn't necessarily think that this particular short film stands up to the rest of his work, we'd have to disagree!

If you have machinima or movie suggestions from any MMO, please send them to machinima AT massively DOT com, along with any information you might have about them.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
