Within hours, vendors took down thousands of products, many abandoning the service entirely in favor of alternative services.</p>
<p>It's unclear just how many vendors have abandoned the <em>Xstreet SL</em> system, but it apparently was enough to temporarily overload the Web-sites of third-party sites such as <a href="http://slapt.me/">Slapt</a>.</p><p><a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/11/20/linden-lab-to-raise-xstreet-fees-loses-vendors-products/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Linden Lab to raise Xstreet fees, loses vendors, products</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.massively.com"><img src="http://www.massively.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/11/20/linden-lab-to-raise-xstreet-fees-loses-vendors-products/">Linden Lab to raise Xstreet fees, loses vendors, products</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.massively.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 20 Nov 2009 17:00:00 EST. <p>Yesterday at the morning <a href="http://secondlife.com/"><em>Second Life</em></a> mentors' meeting, <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/linden-lab">Linden Lab</a> staff announced that Linden Lab's sponsored mentor group, which had been functionally closed (in all but name) for approximately a year now, would finally be disbanded in practice. The move doesn't really come as much of a surprise to observers of the Lab's sponsored volunteer programs over the last eighteen months.</p>
<p>Almost immediately more ex-mentor <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/second-life"><em>Second Life</em></a> social groups than we could comfortably count sprang up, as people prepared to maintain their network of contacts without the overarching group umbrella. While there was surprisingly little actual yelling, some members of the organization feel the blame lies squarely at the feet of Linden Lab's CEO Mark Kingdon, though there's not a lot of apparent evidence to justify that.</p><p><a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/11/19/linden-lab-to-disband-moribund-mentor-group/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Linden Lab to disband moribund mentor group</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.massively.com"><img src="http://www.massively.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/11/19/linden-lab-to-disband-moribund-mentor-group/">Linden Lab to disband moribund mentor group</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.massively.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 19 Nov 2009 12:00:00 EST. <p>Virtual environment operator <a href="http://massively.com/tag/linden-lab">Linden Lab</a> has partnered up with 888 Holdings plc's Gisland/Dragonfish division to provide payment processing for non-US <a href="http://secondlife.com/"><em>Second Life</em></a> customers.</p>
<p>A spokesperson for Linden Lab told us, "<em>We're working together with Gisland on a cashier interface and other tools that will give Residents more payment options and make it easier for Residents to pay in a wider range of native currencies than they can now. Gisland will also help Linden Lab implement appropriate anti-fraud measures as we expand these payment options. In addition, Gisland will assist Residents directly with payment-related issues, including failed transactions."</em></p>
<p>That last part is fascinating, as that would be something of a first insofar as <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/second-life"><em>Second Life</em></a> payments processing goes, as is the tantalizing hint of expanded payment options - something that is of considerable interest to users outside North America.</p><p><a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/11/18/linden-lab-partners-with-dragonfish-for-non-us-payments-processi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Linden Lab partners with Dragonfish for non-US payments processing</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.massively.com"><img src="http://www.massively.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/11/18/linden-lab-partners-with-dragonfish-for-non-us-payments-processi/">Linden Lab partners with Dragonfish for non-US payments processing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.massively.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 18 Nov 2009 21:00:00 EST. <p>Telstra BigPond (a major Australian Internet Service Provider, with an approximate 50% market-share) has had one of the most popular corporate presences in the virtual environment of <a href="http://secondlife.com/" style=""><em>Second Life</em></a>, even <a href="http://www.massively.com/2008/09/01/bigpond-launches-customer-service-center-in-second-life/" target="_blank" style="">including a customer service center</a> staffed eleven hours per day, five days per week. In a nation with expensively metered bandwidth, BigPond even refrained from metering a portion of the data sent to its customers from <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/second-life" style=""><em>Second Life</em></a>. All of this for what has basically been an experiment.</p>
<p>That, however, appears to be coming to a close. BigPond intends to shutter its <em>Second Life</em> presence on 16 December.</p><p><a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/11/17/telstra-bigpond-to-shutter-second-life-presence-in-december/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Telstra BigPond to shutter Second Life presence in December</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.massively.com"><img src="http://www.massively.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/11/17/telstra-bigpond-to-shutter-second-life-presence-in-december/">Telstra BigPond to shutter Second Life presence in December</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.massively.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 17 Nov 2009 12:00:00 EST. Linden Lab identified three non-English regional markets that it felt were priorities for support and localization: Brazil, Korea and Germany.</p>
<p>The first of the providers was Kaizen Games in Brazil, followed by Barunson Games (then called T-Entertainment) in Korea in October 2007. <a href="http://www.bokowsky.net/de/presse/mitteilungen/2009.02.php">Bokowsky and Laymann</a> might constitute a third partner in this program for Germany, but the the actual arrangement there isn't very clear.</p><p><a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/11/16/second-life-global-provider-program-troubled/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Second Life Global Provider Program troubled?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.massively.com"><img src="http://www.massively.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/11/16/second-life-global-provider-program-troubled/">Second Life Global Provider Program troubled?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.massively.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 16 Nov 2009 09:00:00 EST. No, not the stylized science fiction that <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> promises, or the fantasy-with-spaceships of <a href="http://www.swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: the Old Republic</em></a>. We've heard the announcement about <a href="http://www.nasa.gov">NASA</a>'s coming space MMO, <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/astronaut-moon-mars-and-beyond/"><em>Astronaut: Moon, Mars and Beyond</em></a>, but the game hasn't been making the rounds in the usual gaming circuit. An <a href="http://www.edge-online.com/features/where-no-game-has-gone-before">in-depth article</a> about the game's development and planned release is interesting for any fans of the rigors and challenges of spaceflight, not mention a look at a game that's moving far outside the usual realm of our genre.<br />
<br />
Much like <a href="http://www.americasarmy.com"><em>America's Army</em></a>, the goal of the game is to try and give players a taste of what it's like to actually work in the field being simulated. While the game is focusing on creating enjoyable gameplay first, players can expect to see landscapes and tasks grounded in solid scientific principles and based upon actual astronaut missions, complete with the real and tangible challenges of exploring inhospitable worlds. The article also discusses the <em>MoonBase</em> module, which is set to be launched as a free standalone component on Steam in January to serve as both a preview and a testbed for the game. Take a look at <a href="http://www.edge-online.com/features/where-no-game-has-gone-before">the full article</a> for a closer examination of what the game could mean, and what it might be like to play a space game where you were less concerned about arming weapons and more concerned with understanding the world around you.<br />
<br />
(Or, if you have to, start imagining an expansion set in the 1980s adding the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_space_program">Soviet space program</a> as a new faction. There are <a href="http://www.massively.com/2008/09/29/massivelys-guide-to-reducing-your-second-life-lag/" target="_blank" style="">plenty of other non-server items that might contribute to perceived poor performance</a>, of course, but server class versus server utilization is a pretty consistent factor.</p>
<p>Traditionally, each class of server has a numerical designation and represents a certain basic equipment and operating system specification. In the past, some estate owners have opted not to upgrade to a newer class of hardware in order to avoid higher monthly fees. Now the server class system is coming to an end.</p><p><a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/11/11/second-lifes-classless-server-scheme/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Second Life's classless server scheme</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.massively.com"><img src="http://www.massively.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/11/11/second-lifes-classless-server-scheme/">Second Life's classless server scheme</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.massively.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 11 Nov 2009 18:00:00 EST. We were sent a copy a few minutes later, and the email was widely circulated among developers of third-party <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/second-life"><em>Second Life</em></a> viewers by Halloween.</p>
<p>What caught people's eye about the email was how harsh it was when it came to describing aspects of the upcoming <em>Second Life</em> Viewer 2.0 user-interface (the key feature of that software). It certainly didn't pull many punches leveling criticism at various design choices that were obviously in evidence in the evaluation version that had come up for testing.</p>
<p>And for just that reason we are, after a little thought, rather heartened by it.</p><p><a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/11/10/leaked-test-feedback-offers-insights-into-linden-lab-design-proc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Leaked test feedback offers insights into Linden Lab design processes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.massively.com"><img src="http://www.massively.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/11/10/leaked-test-feedback-offers-insights-into-linden-lab-design-proc/">Leaked test feedback offers insights into Linden Lab design processes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.massively.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 10 Nov 2009 15:00:00 EST. <p><a style="" href="http://massively.com/tag/linden-lab">Linden Lab</a> has <a style="" href="https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/features/blog/2009/11/02/the-second-life-economy--third-quarter-2009-in-detail">released the figures for the third-quarter performance</a> of <a style="" href="http://secondlife.com/"><em>Second Life</em></a>.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">If you want the short version, it wasn't a growth quarter. Q3 2009 figures were not really very distinguishable from Q2 2009. There's actually nothing wrong with that. While he has not been uncommunicative, it's been hard to get a very good sense of the man at the helm of Linden Lab, his passions, interests and direction.</p>
<p>We were very pleased, therefore, when he took the time to sit down with us and answer a whole grab-bag of questions, about himself, about Linden Lab, and - of course - about <a href="http://secondlife.com/"><em>Second Life</em></a>. <div align="left">You're in a business. Your business has a presence in <a href="http://www.secondlife.com"><em>Second Life</em></a>. In your business, you have two furries, three hot vixens who probably belong in a strip club, the token emo goth guy, and the dude who made his avatar just like <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3d_fqDcN1s">his real world self</a>. Everyone's happy with how they look and how they represent the company, right?<br /><br />Well, according to the analysts at Gartner Inc., the <a href="http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/344833/Virtual_Worlds_Employee_Avatars_Will_Need_Dress_Codes">winds of change might be blowing</a> through virtual companies. The analysts are saying that over 70% of all virtual companies will end up adopting avatar dress codes by the end of 2013, in a move to look more professional and focused.<br /><br />While avatar dress codes aren't the best option in the world, we too understand that some level of conformity in virtual business is needed. Of course this all depends on the business, as more independent companies can take a looser stance on dress codes. Well, a joint-project of <a href="http://we-learn.com.au/">Rhys Moult</a> with Curtin University and the Tabor Adelaide iYouth Project has produced a video which essentially summarizes the 7,500 word <a href="http://secondlife.com/"><em>Second Life</em></a> <a href="http://secondlife.com/corporate/tos.php" target="_blank">Terms of Service</a> in a straightforward and easy-to-digest form. It's not that intellectual property infringement is new - you can certainly replicate content with the official viewer if you know how - but it is in the limelight and a major feature of <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/second-life"><em>Second Life</em></a> discussions by virtue of assorted <a target="_blank" href="http://www.massively.com/2009/10/27/second-life-designers-burned-at-burning-life/">high-profile infringements</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="http://www.massively.com/2009/04/21/taser-international-vs-linden-lab-crack-den-crackdown/">legal</a> <a target="_blank" href="http://www.massively.com/2009/09/16/eros-llc-shannon-grei-form-class-action-against-linden-lab-for/">actions</a>.</p>
<p>Copyright infringement can't be made to go away. Since the Statute of Anne in 1710 originally codified copyrights in law, infringement has only been somewhat quelled by various means, never practically eliminated. In these predominantly digital times, there are many new tradeoffs could be made that could reduce the incidence of infringement, but at the cost of also reducing functionality.</p><p><a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/11/01/what-compromises-would-you-make-to-reduce-second-life-copyright/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>What compromises would you make to reduce Second Life copyright infringement?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.massively.com"><img src="http://www.massively.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/11/01/what-compromises-would-you-make-to-reduce-second-life-copyright/">What compromises would you make to reduce Second Life copyright infringement?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.massively.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 01 Nov 2009 12:00:00 EST. For others, like writers at our parent site Joystiq, it's a brave new virtual world where the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/12/how-to-perform-quincying-in-playstation-home/">fine art of Quincying can thrive</a>. <br />
<br />
Now that <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/home"><em>PlayStation</em> <em>Home</em></a> has gained some traction with its <a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/06/02/e3-2009-sony-says-playstation-home-holds-6-5-million-accounts/">install base</a> and users are making <a href="http://www.massively.com/2008/12/31/homes-virtual-items-rake-in-more-than-movies/">microtransaction purchases</a>, does Sony intend to develop the marketplace further? Not immediately, according to <em>PlayStation Home</em>'s Pete Edwards. <a href="http://www.edge-online.com/news/playstation-home-not-a-business-priority">Edge Online quotes Edwards</a>, speaking at the London Games Conference this week: <em>"It's been a long road. We've proved there is a market out there and we've got a lot of people that spend a lot of time in [Home]. It's not a priority right now but there is a business model there." </em><br />

Now here's an odd question that could only be thought up at 8 in the morning. If you own a PS3, are you an avid user of <em><a href="http://www.us.playstation.com/PSN/Home">PlayStation Home</a></em>, or do you avoid the console's virtual world like the plague?<br /><br />We ask because the world seems to present two very different versions of itself. On one hand, some of the mini-games are kinda interesting, the virtual environment does take full advantage of the PS3's graphical capabilities, and the virtual spaces for the different PS3 games are kinda cool.<br /><br />However, on the flip side, you get to deal with the worst of the <a href="http://www.us.playstation.com/psn">PlayStation Network</a> community while you can't completely remove them from your screen. If you make a female avatar, get ready to get swamped by every guy in a 30 virtual mile radius no matter how you're dressed.<br /><br />So tell us why or why not you use <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/home"><em>Home</em></a>, and don't be afraid to give us all of the gritty details. Go readers, go!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.massively.com"><img src="http://www.massively.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/10/30/the-daily-grind-do-you-use-playstation-home/">The Daily Grind: Do you use PlayStation Home?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.massively.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 30 Oct 2009 08:00:00 EST. <p>It isn't really Burning Life's fault, but if you had to place the stuff somewhere where many people would take it, none-the-wiser that it was unlawful content, that would be the best place at this time of the year.<br /></p><p><a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/10/27/second-life-designers-burned-at-burning-life/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Second Life designers burned at Burning Life</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.massively.com"><img src="http://www.massively.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/10/27/second-life-designers-burned-at-burning-life/">Second Life designers burned at Burning Life</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.massively.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 27 Oct 2009 10:30:00 EST. <p>One of the big claims about <em><a href="http://www.swtor.com">Star Wars: the Old Republic</a></em> is that the game is meant to be fully voiced, from start to finish. On the flip side, <em><a href="http://www.startrekonline.com">Star Trek Online</a></em> will not be fully voiced -- in fact, its executive producer Craig Zinkievich recently <a href="http://www.videogamer.com/news/star_trek_online_dev_questions_fully_voice_acted_sw_tor.html">made some statements</a> asking more or less what the point of voice acting in the game really is. To quote: <em>"It adds something to the game, but I don't think that VO-ing all of your text provides for that big a bang for the buck in terms of immersion."</em></p>
<p><a href="http://biobreak.wordpress.com/">Bio Break</a> seems to <a href="http://biobreak.wordpress.com/2009/10/22/talking-listening-and-reading/">disagree rather emphatically</a>. As he points out, voice is one of the most immersive and important parts of a game world in which our immersion is, by necessity, limited. We can only hear or see what's going on in front of us, which makes the things we hear and see all the more important. (Or makes a USB taste simulator all the more urgent.) He points out, quite rightly, that each of us have at least one or two bosses that we remember more on the strength of their voice acting than because of the fight itself.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.bioware.com/">Bioware</a>, of course, has long offered a great deal of voice acting in its games. It remains to be seen if the promises of pervasive acting in <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars:</em> <em>the Old Republic</em></a> will be carried out, but the discussion about how important voice is will remain either way. Take a look at the article, and share your thoughts in the comments: is it important that a game have full voiceovers and cutscenes, or is that a distraction without much relevance?</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.massively.com"><img src="http://www.massively.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/10/24/what-voice-does-for-mmos/">What voice does for MMOs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.massively.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 24 Oct 2009 17:00:00 EST. At present, it isn't actually known what effect the marker has, or to what use it is being put. At some future time, we are told, it may be used to exempt accounts from contributing to the <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/second-life"><em>Second Life</em></a> parcel-traffic system.</p>
<p>Right now, though, it's sort of like being asked "Would all citizens who have firearms and do not use them to break the law, please leave your name at your local police-station." That is, there doesn't seem anything actually <em>wrong</em> with the idea, but you've got to wonder why it is being asked at this time.</p><p><a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/10/22/second-life-users-can-flag-accounts-as-bots-to-no-effect/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Second Life users can flag accounts as bots, to no effect</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.massively.com"><img src="http://www.massively.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/10/22/second-life-users-can-flag-accounts-as-bots-to-no-effect/">Second Life users can flag accounts as bots, to no effect</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.massively.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 22 Oct 2009 17:00:00 EST.
