The latest Guild Wars skill balance explained

Filed under: Fantasy, Guild Wars, Classes, Game mechanics, PvP, PvE

In the most recent skill balance for Guild Wars, we're treated to something we don't normally get: a full explanation on the reasoning behind the changes to each skill set for the classes affected. In most skill balances (for any game) we get news of the changes to the skills, but that's about it.

For example, the devs make it known that they're aware of the ongoing player concerns with Ursan Blessing, yet they still don't feel a need to make any changes to the skill. They also hope to bring a little sword-love back to PvP, as well as quite a few changes to the Mesmer's energy-draining skills. There's also a clear distinction between the PvE and the PvP skills they're changing, and the reasoning behind both. Be sure to check out the source link below for a complete run-down of all skills changed this time around.

Sweeping changes to Hellgate: London in Abyss Chronicles

Filed under: Horror, Sci-fi, Expansions, Patches, Hellgate: London

Hell is about to get even hotter, as Flagship Studios prepares to unleash fresh content for Hellgate: London. Our sister blog Big Download has some posted new screenshots of the upcoming Abyss Chronicles for HG:L, as well as info on the 2.0 and 2.1 updates to the title. Patch 2.0 will be Hellgate: London's second major content update, and brings with it a host of new features and changes to the game. The build is likely to go live on the Test Server in the next week, but until then, here's Big Download's breakdown of the 2.0 changes:

  • A new quest line that covers the spread of the Abyss through Parliament Square and the survivors' efforts to fight back
  • A major rebalancing of the Blademaster class
  • A complete PvP overhaul, including achievements, rankings, rewards, and a new CTF team gametype
  • Changes to the Shared Stash, such as a separate pane for each difficulty
  • Addition of two new trinket slots for players to add rings and such to their characters
  • An attribute respec NPC that allows players to remove points from an attribute for a fee-per-point
  • Three new skills for each class
  • A consignment house (read: auction house) where players can sell stuff to other players without direct trading
Beyond rolling out The Abyss Chronicles with 2.0, the next area Flagship Studios is focusing on is PvP through Patch 2.1. The patch will 'open up an entirely new side to Hellgate: London' by introducing five cohesive elements of PvP in a single update: ranking, matchmaking, rewards, achievements, and Capture the Flag. The end result is what Flagship describes as 'a robust PvP experience.'

Tabula Rasa Feedback Friday

Filed under: Sci-fi, Classes, Game mechanics, Patches, Professions, Tabula Rasa

In this week's installment of TR's Feedback Friday, we get some information on a needed improvement to the Public Test Server and a change to the Shredder Ammo skill that players have come to love since the last patch.

For the last few Public Test Server proliferations, a game master has been on-hand to give players an instant boost to level 30 in order to check out the Tier 4 class changes. This only seemed fair since the majority of changes happened to these high-level classes. In the spirit of convenience, the developers have created a PTS Level Command NPC who will do that dirty work for them.

In addition to this, they mention their awareness of the problems with the Sniper's signature weapon -- the Torqueshell Rifle -- and how players have resorted to the Chaingun/Shredder Ammo combo with their Snipers. They state their intentions to re-balance this in order to make the TSR more effective, and lower the extremely unbalanced power of the Chaingun/Shredder combo.

Narrowing the gap between casual and power gamers

Filed under: Classes, Game mechanics, PvP, PvE, Opinion

You know the type.

The minimaxer. The person who sits around with spreadsheets, crunching every possible combination of traits and skills until they've come up with the ultimate class build.

That beloved stereotype from pen-and-paper RPG's is alive and kicking in pretty much every MMO running. Massively's touched on minimaxing and the problems it leads to before and it's a fair assumption that we'll do it again.

That's not to say that there's anything wrong with it. It's your game and you can play it however you want. But minimaxing impacts the game in significant ways for hardcore and casual players alike.

An in-depth look at class design in favor of the hybrid

Filed under: Classes, Game mechanics, Academic, Education

When it comes to choosing your class, we don't usually think much past the basics of the class's design, and of course how awesome you'll look in your favorite armor. But there's so much more to designing a balanced character class in an MMO than you might expect.

Recently, in a wonderful article at Gamasutra, John Hopson takes a look at the importance of designing a class from the most effective standpoint needed in an MMO. It doesn't have to do with the most efficient design, or the most powerfully specialized, but it's more about the situation you're in at that time. This is why his argument in favor of a hybrid class design is so compelling. Approached as a comparison to economics, it all makes perfect sense, and it will certainly open your eyes to what class designers are focusing on in current MMOs, and more importantly, future MMOs.

Runescape cracking down hard on RMT

Filed under: Fantasy, Business models, Culture, Economy, Game mechanics, Patches, Runescape, Free-to-play, Browser

It's the season for talking about holiday events and ... virtual world trading, apparently. The free-to-play browser-based game Runescape has combined both in its recent website updates. A post from last week indicates that they're making some hard choices in an attempt to put a stop to botters, scammers, and gold sellers. Their solution, which they acknowledge won't be making them any friends, is to no longer allow unbalanced trades.

It will be tough for law-abiding players, but it will also be tough for us, as we will certainly not be gaining money or members with this update. Instead, we are doing this for the good of the game, which is as dear to our hearts as it is to you. Soon, the hard part will be over and done with. The unbalanced trade changes will be made in January and we certainly don't plan any more hard changes in the foreseeable future.

Their first post on the topic is deliberately vague, but a follow-up outlines the specifics of the January trade fixes.

We're planning to raise the 3,000gp staking/trading limit for certain players. This will be proportional to the number of Quest Points you have, with the top-end being ten-times what it is now! This should still offer protection from cheats, while also giving you more flexibility in your staking and trading activities.

They've also put up the yearly Christmas event, featuring the Queen of Snow, snowball fights, and a Snow tournament. The big present for this year, apparently, is going to be safe trading in the new year.

Scott Jennings on how to make PvP not suck

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fury, Game mechanics, MMO industry, PvP

haha u died lolJust in case any of us design a PvP ruleset for a massively multiplayer online game, Scott Jennings has helpfully posted a 13-step guide to "PvP done right" on his personal blog, BrokenToys.org.

It's a potent mixture of common sense, personal opinion, and thousands upon thousands disagreeing that classes are needed. It's a great primer, aphorisms or not, and written wonderfully. Put simply, PvP in a game needs to work -- if it's an impossible concept or impossible to implement, nothing else matters. Personally, I'd go as far as to say the simpler the concept, the better the execution -- of course, that's a huge sweeping statement, but be it Team Fortress 2 or World of Warcraft or Chess, the depth doesn't come from the rules, it comes from the implementation. Except Cricket.

All decisions will upset someone. It's just about having a realistic, well-defined goal for PvP in your game and going from there -- and accepting that there will always be an awful lot of criticism, rage, and Fury.

Warhammer devs explain balancing RvR

Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Classes, New titles, PvP, Warhammer Online

Over at the Ten Ton Hammer site they have up a discussion with members of the Warhammer Online development team, talking all about the fine process of balancing classes for Realm vs. Realm combat. RvR team members Yvonne Bridges and Brian Wheeler hooked up with Careers Lead Adam Gershowitz to answer the TTH staffer's questions. The line of inquiry primarily centers around the way classes in opposing factions interact with each other.

According to the WAR team members, it's not so much that they're tuned to fight their specific opposing faction (Greenskins have no special advantage over Dwarves, for example). Instead, classes are designed to be good at defending against specific types of damage. Players can decide to specialize (via abilities) in fighting a group of enemy players, but that's a choice left to them.

They also briefly touch on RvR questing and the role of gear in that part of the game: Both skill and gear will obviously play a role in a player's success in RvR. That is the nature of this type of game. Some players will naturally excel in combat and we don't want to penalize them for this. However, we don't want them to dominate all the time either, thus gear comes into play. Spend time in the game and you will be rewarded with gear, and you should be able to put that gear to use.
