Cinemassively: The BS-1337 Nuclear Rocket

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Video, Cinemassively, Machinima, Humor

During Blizzard's recent Worldwide Invitational in France, a World of Warcraft machinima contest took place. While Olibith swept most of the prizes, some of the non-winning videos were quite good. Baron Soosdon took second place in the commercial contest with his machinima of the BS-1337 Nuclear Rocket. With over 9000 megatons of pure evil, this device is perfect for the villain on the go!

Cinemassively: Chilled Escapism

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Video, Cinemassively, Machinima

Today's Cinemassively is a slow one, so grab your pillow and chill out with Chilled Escapism. This machinima is just yet another visual masterpiece by the World of Warcraft guru, Baron Soosdon. While there's no actual plot or point, we would say that this video could be used for zen meditation.

Baron does such amazing things with Sony Vegas, such as blending color filters and special effects, and WoW, that we're pretty sure he's a ninja! For more information on Chilled Escapism, as well as his other projects, you can check out his blog.

Cinemassively: Kake Buk Island, Episode 1

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Video, Cinemassively, Machinima, Humor

(Please note that this machinima contains some harsh language. In addition, machinima.com is down at this moment, but you can find a higher quality stream of the video there.)

In November, we spoke of a hybrid machinima movement that involved blending one engine with multiple tools in order to create a finished product. Baron Soosdon has been an early adopter of this, as he normally blends World of Warcraft with Unreal Tournament, as well as WoW Model and Map Viewers.

Baron's latest project, Kake Buk Island: Episode 1 - "You Damn Beach" is a comedy adventure that is part action, part thriller, and part ... Rick Astley? The movie is about an orc that wakes up on an island and encounters two girls whose pig he must rescue from a sinister villain. While the voice acting is pretty horrible, the visual quality of the two mediums is excellent. We look forward to the sequel!

Nominees announced in 6th Annual Bitfilm Festival

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Real life, Contests, Events, real-world, Second Life, Machinima

This year's Bitfilm Festival will be a tight race. There are five nominees from MMOs, with the rest being from a variety of platforms. Last year, Olibith took home the top prize with a World of Warcraft machinima, but this year is anyone's game!

The 2008 Bitfilm MMO nominees are:
Voting takes place between May 1st and July 1st, 2008. In order to rate the nominees, you'll need a Bitfilm account, but they do offer the chance to win audience prizes for participating!

Cinemassively: Rage & Rapture

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Video, Cinemassively, Machinima

If it didn't contain color filters, it wouldn't be a Baron Soosdon film. Rage & Rapture is no exception, as he blends World of Warcraft and Unreal Tournament 3 to create a surreal party atmosphere. It is the story of an undead shadowpriestess that launches an attack on the Alliance, stalking them from location to location. However, it's hard to imagine that violence could look so good, as you find yourself immersed in a world that doesn't even resemble WoW!

Cinemassively: The Device Has Been Modified

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Sci-fi, Video, Cinemassively, Machinima, Humor

Let's say that Gnomeregan merged with Aperture Science. What would happen if you installed GLaDOS on mechanistriders? Baron Soosdon put that question to the test, in The Device Has Been Modified.

If you like Rick Astley, Shepiwot, and Linkin Park, then this is the machinima for you! Baron turns World of Warcraft into the belly of the beast, as the heroine, a lone gnome on a journey to save her life, must fight her way against the rogue MechaMurlocs and mechanistriders. Will she survive, or will she go the way of the weighted companion cube?

[Thanks, Baron!]

Cinemassively: Big Blue Dress

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Video, Cinemassively, Machinima, Humor

Before there were the Baron Soosdons of the World of Warcraft machinima world, there was Cranius. When we'd ask WoW players what videos were in their top 10, Big Blue Dress came up quite often. He's back at it with his latest video, Darrowshire, but definitely download the high quality version of the video that started it all.

Cranius wrote and sang the title song, which posed the question of why these manly men should have to wear dresses during their battles. You'll find PvP, singing gnomes, and plenty of nostalgia. You see, this machinima was made back in February 2006!

[Thanks, Cranius!]

Cinemassively: Rock Rockin' Tha Spot

(Warning: The management has asked me to make it clear that this video is Not Safe For Work (NSFW). If pixel nudity, language, or Olibith offend your delicate Victorian sensibilities, do not click after the jump.)

When I heard that Baron Soosdon was making a new music video, I chased him down only to find out that it might not be suitable for our audience. Awful things immediately ran through my head, so I was pleasantly surprised that Rock Rockin' Tha Spot wasn't that bad. Yes, there's some unsavory moments, but you'd really be missing out if you didn't watch.

Baron is a Machinima master, skilled at making World of Warcraft look like an MTV video with a million dollar budget. He was able to finish this video much sooner because he used more in-game footage versus model viewer characters. However, with the way he blends colors and light, you can hardly even tell it's WoW anymore.

CoX Issue 11 videos: Samuraiko Productions

Filed under: City of Heroes, City of Villains, Machinima

Professionally-made trailers and videos are designed to dazzle and to glow. More and more, however, fan-made videos are achieving the same level of quality and professionalism, and are shaping up into astounding works of art in their own right. As our own Moo Money noted, machinima artists such as Baron Soosdon are looked up to because their work is incredibly evocative and remarkably well-crafted.

In that vein, the head of Samuraiko Productions has been striving for -- and, from what I've seen, achieving -- top-notch quality in all of her work. Her latest piece, an homage to NCsoft's Issue 11 expansion for the City of Heroes/City of Villains properties, continues her path in the quest for perfection. The music is well-chosen, the transitions are seamless, the text and graphic overlays are layered perfectly ... my only complaint is that it wasn't long enough. Although I'm unable to embed the video here due to the artist's request, it is available for viewing on both You Tube and the Samuraiko Productions web site. Be prepared for buffering the first time you play it off the web site, but the level of detail in the non-compressed production is well worth the wait.

Cinemassively: Limited Escapism - To Cure a Hangover

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Video, Cinemassively, Machinima

When an orc wakes up with a horrible hangover and no booze in sight, he heads for the video store. The clerk begins showing him a series of movies, some hits and some misses. This Machinima has it all - guns, anime girls, tentacles, music, and murlocs.

BaronSoosdon has done it again! With voice acting by Nyhm & Olibith, and creative use of World of Warcraft and Unreal Tournament 2004, it's no surprise that this movie won first prize in the comedy category of the Fabled Few contest. My personal favorite mini-clip was "Unlimited Escapism - Liberation." What was your favorite moment?

Cinemassively: I'm So Sick

There's definitely a hierarchy in the Machinima world. For example, I personally get all fangirl over people that do community-related activities, like Hugh Hancock or Phil Rice. They, however, rave about guys like Baron Soosdon.

Baron created this music video based on a song, of the same name, by Flyleaf and Legion of Doom. He used Unreal Tournament 2004, Half-Life 2, and World of Warcraft for the backgrounds, but the characters themselves are from WoW. The editing in this video is absolutely superb. The visuals are top notch, showing off stunning scenery and little tricks like depth of field.

Did I mention that it's just one of a ton of outstanding movies he's made in WoW and other mediums? Yep, he's just that good. You can read more about how he made it on his blog.
