Short AoC downtime today will fix socketed item bug

Filed under: Fantasy, Age of Conan, Bugs, Patches, Server downtime

At least a few people will be confused when opening their Age of Conan patcher to see that there is some downtime scheduled for today, after having the now-weekly patch take place yesterday. Today's downtime could be considered an "emergency patch" of sorts, as it is intended to correct an issue that arose from yesterday's update.

The offending bug causes certain socketed items to lose their sockets -- we are assured, however, that any socketed gems are still intact, and will reappear when the problem is fixed. The blanket figure of "5 hours" has been given for the downtime, which will commence at 7AM EDT on US servers, but community manager Famine has stated that it will likely be closer to 1 or 2 hours. The patch has already been deployed to the European servers, and their downtime was roughly 3 and a half hours going by this thread.

Conan's female avatar DPS bug will take weeks to correct

Filed under: Fantasy, Age of Conan, Bugs, Patches

A few weeks back our own Adrian Bott took a close look at a very ... unique ... bug in Age of Conan. It seems that differing animation cycles in the game have resulted in an unforseen side effect: female avatars do less damage then male ones. At the time, the Funcom developers said they'd let us know as soon as they could about a fix. Today they let us know, but the news is mixed. The good news is that 'straight damage' (what they call white damage) has been fixed. Simple autoattack routines use few animations and they've all been fixed and pushed to the live servers.

The problem comes in with the much-vaunted realtime combat system, which requires heavy use of combos and unique animations. There are almost a thousand of those animations, and every single one will apparently have to be tweaked by animators and then retuned by a designer. "I know that many of you will probably be disappointed to hear that it might take us as much as another three to four weeks to solve this issue, for which I can only apologize, but we want to make sure that we devote the amount of time that an issue of this magnitude and importance deserves ... I have to stress that even with our internal goal set and everything currently proceeding on schedule I cannot currently promise that this will be patched to Live at the projected date."

CoX addresses the dreaded sync bug

Filed under: Super-hero, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Bugs, Patches

Imagine it: you fasten the brooch on your cape, buckle on your piston boots, and stroll out of the door of your super base, only to find a deserted city before you. The City of Heroes - or Villains - is abandoned. The buildings are still standing, but there are no people. Familiar contacts are gone from their street corners. No pedestrians pass by and wave to you. Places that are usually abuzz with player chatter, like Atlas Park, are silent. Even the villains are gone. You are the only living thing anywhere in this desolate place.

It's not post-apocalyptic CoX, it's the result of a bug that has been around for a while, but has been cropping up a lot more with the last round of patches. The 'sync bug', as it is known, gets the client out of sync with the server. You can move around, but you can't interact with the other elements of the game world. It's spooky, and it's very frustrating.

Runescape cheater exposes his 'black market' organization

Filed under: Fantasy, Bugs, Exploits, Game mechanics, Making money, Runescape, Legal

PlayNoEvil points out an interesting blog entry on cheating in Runescape. The poster, who wishes to remain anonymous, describes himself as a retired Runescape cheater who devoted five years to the 'darker side' of the game. He states, "This article details all the intricacies of Runescape and cheating and what really goes on behind the scenes, I assure you that it will surprise you."

The poster, identified only by the name ThirdEyeOpen, lays out how cheaters and buyers operated as a would-be organized crime ring. 'Welcome to the Dark Side' is his chronicle of how he began his Runescape cheating career, and how it all ended. He recounts being 'interrogated' online by Jagex Ltd. about his activities, and how the subsequent account banning led to a malevolent wish to get even. His anger eventually snowballed into the creation of an organization of similar-minded individuals, mostly other teenagers, who accumulated a fair amount of real-world currency through exploits in Runescape before cashing out altogether. It's an interesting read -- perhaps a bit disturbing in the sense that he views cheating as a kind of playstyle -- but worth checking out all the same.

Age of Conan: mostly armless

Filed under: Fantasy, Age of Conan, Bugs, Humor

Damion Schubert, a long-time game developer, runs a personal website called Zen of Design, where he tackles any number of issues in MMO design. Sometimes, though, he just throws out random bits of goodness like this Age of Conan experience:

Tonight in Age of Conan, someone jumped me while i was doing something else, then proceeded to perform a fatality on me. It was one I hadn't seen before, and it involved him chopping off my arms, then chopping off my head. Which is cool and all, but after I respawned, I didn't have any arms. It was a purely visual bug - I could still fight and quest and whatnot. Still, I spent the next hour trying to find out which animations looked goofiest with stubs cut off at the elbow (dancing is good, stealth is better). Unfortunately, it was only an error on my screen, which meant that me screaming 'It's only a flesh wound!' in town probably made little sense to those who passed by.

Given how new Age of Conan is, bugs and glitches like this are likely to keep turning up. Has anything similar, or funnier, happened to you in Age of Conan?

Character creation freezes up in Age of Conan

Filed under: Age of Conan, Bugs, News items

Apparently if you're in the mind to make a new Age of Conan character you may want to wait little a while. Players making the attempt to fashion themselves a new avatar are met with a message from Funcom informing them that the feature is having some problems and will thus be deactivated until the issue can be solved. The problem does not seem to be persistent across all servers, however. As of right now the only server we were having this problem on was the Set sever, so hopefully it's an isolated issue that shouldn't last very long.

We're honestly surprised it took this long for any real headaches to happen, especially with how many people have been buying up the game. Now the real test will be how long it takes Funcom to solve the problem and get everything back to normal.

67,000 plus dead in Jita, cause unknown

Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Events, in-game, Forums, News items, Rumors

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened...
-- Obi Wan

Something 'terrible' indeed has transpired recently in EVE Online, but the event brought more amusement than horror to fans of the brutal sci-fi game. Over 67,000 ships were destroyed in the bustling trading hub of Jita yesterday, and the pilots of EVE's galaxy of New Eden are still trying to figure out what really happened. All of the obliterated ships were shuttles, which is unusual given the nearly endless procession of freighters and industrial ships clogging the system's star gates. The Jita system is notorious for being overcrowded and is often blamed for the lag that affects the rest of New Eden. Not a day goes by without an EVE pilot, somewhere, cursing Jita and calling for the system to be nuked. It seems those rage-fueled wishes were finally granted, just not quite how most would want that retribution to play out.

Theories about the event can be found in multiple forum threads, ranging from the plausible to the absurd. A few players expressed the view that multiple convoys of freighters offloaded their cargo of ships into space at one location, and somehow ignited the mass in a doomsday-level conflagration. Some feel that it was all orchestrated by EVE Online's developers to help set the tone for factional warfare between the races, which is about to consume EVE's pilots in the Empyrean Age expansion. Others point out the most likely cause of the mayhem: it was simply a bug... a map glitch. No official explanation from CCP Games has been given for the occurrence, nor has EVE's Interstellar Correspondents covered news of the event. Glitch or not, it's a novel way to kick off the wave of destruction about to sweep over New Eden mere days from now.

Thanks Hortinstein

One Shots: Perhaps it isn't your destiny

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Age of Conan, Bugs, One Shots

Normally with One Shots we don't get a great deal of backstory, but for today's screenshot from Age of Conan we did. As such, here's Stephen M. with the info on this screenshot. (Note: Spoilers ahead for those who haven't played AoC, but are interested. Skip the info and go straight to the gallery!)

I was doing The End Battle in Age of Conan and there is a cool part where all the "good" questgivers are fighting the Red Hand in the town centre to give you a chance to kill Strom. I died to the boss at this fight (well the boss and a huge zerg rush of normal Red Hand people which the NPCs didn't kill) but managed to kill the boss as I dropped. This meant I had a bugged instance where I couldn't proceed down my quest. I went on to kill Strom any way, and when I did the Red Hand folk stopped spawning for the questgivers to fight, this lead to a lovely scene in the town centre where all the "good guys" stood around or wandered in a circle for a while. This is a shot of all the guys in the town centre (with me on the end) except for Ninus who is wandering behind Tina with a giant red arrow over his head.

We've heard a lot about the destiny quests bugging out for people, but we haven't seen too many nicely lined up shots like this one. They look like they're ready to either rip someone's head off or break into dance. Either way, it would be entertaining!

Do you have a screenshot of your (potentially really strange) adventures? Any and all MMOG worlds are welcome, so send those screenshots in to us here at oneshots AT massively.com. We might showcase your screen next!

AoC Demonologist exploit fixed in recent patch

Filed under: Fantasy, Age of Conan, Bugs, Classes, Exploits, Forums, Game mechanics, New titles, Patches

How long has Age of Conan been out? Like 3 hours? Okay, it's been a week, but still. Players have already discovered a way to exploit a bug and powerlevel their Demonologists to level 80 in that brief time. This is both a testament to the genius of MMO players, and a sign of our complete lack of anything better to do. Apparently, the problem lied in the player's ability to stack certain spells repeatedly and insta-kill mobs. The first person to claim this feat reportedly posted screenshots, a movie and several emails to the GMs explaining his procedure, in hopes of getting it fixed soon. He claims it took him 4 days and 12 hours of in-game time to reach level 80.

So now that we have this update fixed by Funcom, the real question is, what will they do with those who exploited the bug and have level 80 Demonologists running around already? Should they delete those characters, bump them down a few levels, or resort to something more severe like temporary or permanent account banning? I'm sure not all players who are level 80, or even in that vicinity have exploited this bug, so it will be interesting to see how Funcom decides to handle this one.

CoX: Player ingenuity identifies bizarre drops bug

Filed under: Super-hero, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Bugs, Economy, Exploits, Game mechanics, Patches, Maps

Farming often gets a bad rap in City of Heroes, but sometimes it does the game a major favor. For example, a player working the same map with the same enemies over and over is in a perfect position to notice when random events - the dropping of loot, for example - aren't as random as they should be.

This was exactly the situation that a forum regular called KeepDistance encountered. Every time they ran a particular map, they would get exactly the same number of salvage and recipe drops, distributed exactly the same way. That's not supposed to happen.

A bug by any other name

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Bugs, Exploits, Patches, PvP

When is a bug not really a bug? This is the conundrum that was recently addressed over at The Many Relms of Relmstein blog. Apparently, WoW's Patch 2.4 had introduced a bug that prevented players from taking advantage of an exploit with pre-made teams in battlegrounds. It allowed pre-made teams to send out a scout to determine who they'd be battling next. As you can imagine, this is causing some unfair advantages between the two factions. But Blizzard quickly remedied that new bug, which in turn reintroduced the original exploit.

Read more about the details of this ongoing battlegrounds exploit over at Relmstein's blog.

One Shots: Now that's a talented Burglar!

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Lord of the Rings Online, One Shots, Humor

We have to admit -- this Lord of the Rings Online screenshot took us a bit by surprise. Sure, everyone's heard about the famous burglar Bilbo Baggins, but I strongly suspect that even dear, old Bilbo wouldn't have been able to pull this particular job off. Today's One Shot comes to us from Shoukichi and portrays a "theft" most foul. You see, the poor Town Crier has been robbed of both his shoulders and feet by someone who was out to spoil the Spring Festival fun! Of course, the crier, being the stand-up guy he is, remains on the spot just carrying on with his duties as needed. But he certainly looks unhappy about his missing appendages!

Do you have a strange, glitchy, off the wall screenshot you snapped? Perhaps you found an easter egg or a pop culture reference in your game that is just fabulously cool. Whatever your reason, gather up all your screens and send them in to us at oneshots@massively.com. This column is all about you, so jump on in and get your screenshots shown! Weapon swap glitch in TR to get hotfix soon

Filed under: Sci-fi, Bugs, Game mechanics, Tabula Rasa

Destination Games threw a quick notice on their website last night saying that they had been made aware of, and were currently working on a fix for, what has become a very troublesome bug in their seminal MMO release, Tabula Rasa. The bug, in the wording of the release, made it such that, "If you try to switch weapons immediately after firing, your weapon will remain the same. Instead you have to wait a sec or two, then try to switch again." That's putting a bit of a sugar-coating on the bug, which has actually been much more of a nuisance than their release lets on.

One of Tabula Rasa's most endearing gameplay features is that it's combat requires quick, almost shooter-like speed and precision in order to dispatch with enemies as efficiently as possible. Soldier classes need to be able to move between their equipped weapons smoothly, as different weapon types serve very specific purposes in combat, and moving between them mid-battle is absolutely key to taking on large, mixed groups of enemies. Specialists too need to be able to move between their repair and healing tools at will, in order to maximize their utility at keeping parties alive.

According to the release, it should be fixed as of this morning's maintenance. This bug has thrown a wrench in the way the game has played the last two days since the patch, so we're happy to see them getting on top of it ASAP.

Sword of the Nude World

Filed under: Historical, Screenshots, Bugs, Exploits, Sword of the New World

You type in your username and password on the logon screen, the game loads, and you see your character... in the buff. No, you haven't been hit by a keylogger-- if you're playing Granado Espada (a Korean MMO known as Sword of the New World in North America), then odds are you got hit by some kind of weird hack or hoax. Apparently, players logged out of the server on October 20th, and then logged back in to find their characters naked (NSFW, even though pics are blurred), complete with.. umm.. anatomically correct graphics.

How incredibly strange. Random Battle suspects that it's a hoax of some kind, but changes like that have to come server side, so either a player was able to dial into the server and change models somehow, or a wayward mod messed with something as a joke. IMC Games, the game's maker, is reportedly looking into the incident. In other news, Sword of the New World's subscription rate among males has skyrocketed. Go figure.
