Cinemassively: Real Biz in SL looks at Cisco

Filed under: Real life, Video, Events, in-game, Second Life, Free-to-play, Cinemassively, Machinima

The mere mention of most businesses in Second Life can send residents into a fit of rage. However, at least one business has done something right. Cisco Systems has been in SL for over a year, and has no plans to go anywhere yet.

On last week's episode of Real Biz in SL, Cybergrrl Oh got a tour of Cisco's four islands by Christian Renaud, who famously pledged that he would not travel by plane for the remainder of 2007 in order to help reduce airline-related emissions. After that, she asked him five questions. They even put the shortened Q & A up on the screen for you to read! If you haven't seen the show, you can check it out on the Second Life Cable Network.

If you have machinima or movie suggestions from any MMO, please send them to machinima AT massively DOT com, along with any information you might have about them.

Cisco's quantum shift

Filed under: Events, in-game, Launches, News items, Second Life, Virtual worlds

When I see the terms "quantum shift" or "quantum leap", I immediately think "the smallest possible discrete motion that can exist" -- basically because that's what we were taught in high-school all those decades ago.

Cisco is announcing a "quantum shift in networking", with a short machinima video (it's only around 9 or 10 seconds long, and contains no romance, explosions or Linkin Park), and an launch event in Second Life.

Cisco's Quantum flow processor is (we believe) a 40-core beast that can handle 160 threads and 49 billion transactions per second. While that's a very impressive workload specification, we don't believe the processor actually uses any quantum computing technology -- which makes the whole "quantum shift in networking" seem like dubious marketing on two fronts.

Nevertheless, there will be a launch event for the processor in Second Life on Cisco Systems' island on Tuesday, 4 March at 9 AM SLT (US Pacific).

Cisco Systems: 1 year in Second Life

Filed under: Real life, Events, in-game, Interviews, News items, Second Life, Free-to-play, Virtual worlds

Come celebrate with Cisco Systems on January 8th, 1 PM at Cisco Systems Sim 1 as they celebrate their 1 year Second Life anniversary with a party where the cake is certainly not a lie, even if it is virtual.

A live Q&A session will be on hand to discuss Cisco's Visual Networking Strategy, as well as their presence in the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show. I'm pleased that Cisco is still around, and in fact, shows no signs of leaving, unlike some companies I could mention. They seem to be in it for the right reasons, primary of which is the interaction with residents. Good way to build brand awareness, guys!

You can get more information about the SL event here.

[Thanks, Smiddy!]

Cisco's Virtual Career Fair in Second Life

Filed under: Events, in-game, News items, Second Life

I see more and more of these as the months go by and real life companies with a presence in Second Life begin to get a feel for what works. Cisco Systems, Inc. will be holding a Virtual Career Fair for European residents on their island on Tuesday, November 6th, from 9 to 11 AM PST. Among the presenting partners will be Dimension Data UK, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg; NetDesign; Alliant Technologies; Affinity; Voice Tech; Touchbase; Telindus; and BBNED.

Those interested in attending this event are encouraged to register here, and there is more information on the event itself here. Additionally, attendees will be able to meet with Cisco representatives to ask questions about the company and its partners.

Would this event be worth creating an SL account to attend? Maybe not, but it's a great answer to newbies who keep asking 'How can I get a job in Second Life?'

(Thanks, Allison!)
