City of Heroes Mac client goes gold

Filed under: Super-hero, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Launches, News items

Noble citizens, we bring you glad tidings from the city of Paragon. For on this day, those who staunchly refuse to give up their beloved Macs for more MMO choice have a new (native) game to play! Word has come down from the folks at NCsoft that the City of Heroes Mac client has gone gold and is available for all you hip caped crusaders to download. No more will you have to mess with flipping over to the evil tyrrany of Windows to get your crime-fighting on! As if that weren't enough to make you jump gleefully into the Mac client, you will also get an exclusive Valkyrie costume set and (here's the good stuff) a mission teleporter that will allow you to port directly to the door of your active mission. Say bye-bye travel time - and be the envy of all your non-Mac CoX playing friends.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, those Very Silly People at NC NorCal have produced a very special video for the Mac fans in the house. Of course, anyone who owns a Mac (or a TV for that matter) has undoubtedly seen a similar video, but it took the City of Heroes & City of Villains developers to put this particular spin on it. Curious? You can check out their new video behind the cut!

Why you should be playing City of Heroes: Emotes

Filed under: Super-hero, Screenshots, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Opinion, Humor, Why You Should Be Playing

Sure, almost all MMOGs have emotes. They've been there forever. But much like the incredibly involved character creator, City of Heroes boasts a wide range of very silly and fun choices, perfect for those who love to add in that little oomph when role-playing or just messing around with friends. Also, unlike the fire-and-forget-it emote development of many other MMOs, the City of Heroes developers continue to slowly add new emotes in to the game, both through patches and microtransaction packs. Some are easy to find through the chat menus, while others are a bit off the beaten path, and short of hunting down a listing, you may not have seen them all.

For those who haven't ever experienced the wide range of City of Heroes emotes, I've compiled a gallery of some of my personal favorites. That said, this gallery is nowhere nearly the entirety of the emotes in the game. In researching this, I realized there were quite a few I hadn't even seen yet - despite playing CoH for a couple of years now! There are also a few emotes that have multiple /em commands to activate.

That being said, there is really no substitute for seeing them in action. So, if you've been considering trying on some tights, there's no time like the present!

City of Heroes saves the day on the Mac

Filed under: Betas, Super-hero, City of Heroes, City of Villains, MMO industry, News items

Mac users, have no fear! City of Heroes is here! Yes, the original superhero MMO is swooping down onto Apple computers everywhere as NCsoft releases the City of Heroes Mac open beta test, with a release date set for January of 2009. Now Mac users can join in the fight for Paragon City or create chaos in the Rogue Isles without having to dual boot their computers or another medium.

Yet, the fun doesn't stop there for Mac CoH players. An exclusive mission teleport power, which allows the player to instantly teleport to their active mission location, and Valkyrie costume set will be made available to all players who purchase the game via digital download in January. Getting the game for your Mac and getting the ability to save time while looking cool? Very superheroic indeed.

Eurogamer gets their hands on Issue 13 of City of Heroes

Filed under: Super-hero, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Patches, Reviews, Hands-on

Eurogamer recently went in-depth with the City of Heroes huge Issue 13 update, checking out the new day jobs, leveling pact, and dual-spec options. However, not everything was rainbows and sunshine with the large new update, in the opinion of Eurogamer.

With servers in Europe that are suffering from lack-of-player-itis, Eurogamer points out that there's nothing in this new update that can really attract players back to the game. Even if players do come back for the new day jobs and content, they're not being rewarded for playing the game. Leveling pacts and day jobs reward the player for not playing the game, which doesn't do much for low server populations.

Issue 13 brings free weekend for players

Filed under: Super-hero, City of Heroes, Events, in-game, News items

Curious about the changes that Issue 13 has brought in, but not sure if you want to reactivate your City of Heroes or City of Villains account? Well, if so, you're in luck! The good folks at NCNC are eager to show off all the new goodies that were added with Issue 13, and have thrown open the doors to Paragon City, inviting back all former Heroes and Villains who have accounts in good standing.

All returning players will be treated to a "freespec" - or free respec, as well as a free tailoring session, enabling players to take advantage of the cool new costume options. Beyond that, there's new Cimerora and Midnight Squad story arcs to check out; new powersets; the option to have two builds enabling players to have a "solo" and "party" build - or a PvE and PvP build they can switch between; the Leveling Pact option if you're rolling a new character with a friend; and a bunch more to read over.

Of course, there's also the addition of Day Jobs to enjoy, but that works when you're logged out. We're sure you won't want to miss a minute of your free time checking out all the great new content City of Heroes has to offer!

One Shots: Happy Prestige refund day!

Filed under: Super-hero, Screenshots, City of Heroes, One Shots

With Issue 13 hitting the live City of Heroes and City of Villains servers yesterday, many of the players who are fond of base building were immensely happy to see a refund of Prestige; the "cash" that allows players to buy more goodies for their base. (Or in some cases, larger bases!) Of course, the down-side to this is that base builders are still relegated to using magic desks during base building to float objects for now. Today we're showing off a screenshot taken by this blogger - who admits she's a total base-building fiend - having a quick sit-down break between stacking layers of desks to the ceiling. The mission creator in Issue 14 (and hopefully the items to help us float objects in bases easier) can't come fast enough for us!

We love to see what people have done with guild housing, supergroup bases, and more! So if you've built up something cool, why not snap some screenshots of it and send that in to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com! Add in a quick description of what we're seeing (or a longer one if you want to explain your cool building tricks) what game it's from, and your name. We'll show it off to our readers, and your work will get a larger audience than just your group of friends and allies.

City of Heroes Issue 13 goes live!

Filed under: Super-hero, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Patches

Months in the making, delayed when the Mission Architect was pushed to next year, finally finally, City of Heroes Issue 13 is live! Yesterday saw the servers go down for one of the largest content pushes ever by the NCsoft development team. The patch notes are up on the official site, and they're simply monsterous. We've been through this list before, but it's worth going over again: new story arcs for the Midnight Squad, new story arcs for Cimerora, the all-new Merits reward system (which was featured in an exclusive interview here on the site), Day Jobs, new powersets, multiple builds, a huge PvP revamp ... it's exhausting just to mention, let alone consider playing.

For a 'thousand foot view' of Issue 13 and its philosophy, be sure to check out our extensive interview with Brian Clayton and Matt Miller all about the "Power and Responsibility" super-patch to this venerable superhero MMO. During that chat we also talked about the future of purchaseable content packs in the game, something we think we're likely to see new talk of soon. Be sure to check out the links above, read up on the full official patch notes, and dig in to our coverage of City of Heroes Issue 13. Excelsior!

The City of Heroes devs explain the new Merit Reward system

Filed under: Super-hero, City of Heroes, Patches, Massively Interviews

City of Heroes Issue 13 is enormous. Even with the Mission Architect pushed out to early next year, the next big patch coming to City of Heroes has enough content to satisfy a small army of players. We've talked previously about the upcoming PvP changes, the Day Job system, and we had the chance for extensive conversations with the developers back when the Issue was first announced. That said, there's still a lot of ground to cover.

That's why we were thrilled when designer Phil Zeleski and the infamous Matt 'Positron' Miller reached out to us to clarify what's coming down the pipe with game rewards. We chatted with the gents extensively about the new and improved meta-currency coming to City of Heroes. It's going to make Task Forces and Story Arcs far more rewarding for the average player, and the background behind their design is fascinating. Join us below the cut for discussions about how they chose what rewards to give out, trends along these lines in the indstry, and much more.

CoH Merit Reward system explained pt. 2

Filed under: Super-hero, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Patches

It seems like your choice to move to this meta-currency system is an increasingly common design choice in MMOs. Do you see this as a trend in the industry, or did you have ulterior motives for going in this direction aside from satisfying your players?

Phil: Really our goal was to more accurately reward players for their time. Give players what they want, give them more choices. Do they want the random roll? Do they want to save up for something specific? This turned out as our best option, a universal currency system, and that's how that came about.

Matt: Which is not to say we dislike the side effect this has on gold farmers. You can buy as much influence as you want, but it's not going to get you any more merits. Your time in playing the game is what we're trying to reward.

Fan video spotlights CoH character creation

Filed under: Super-hero, Video, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Game mechanics, Academic, Education

We think it's probably common knowledge by now that City of Heroes and City of Villains both have arguably the best character creation process of any MMO out there. This is interesting if you consider the fact that the game has been out for four years now.

Over at the Limited Edition blog, John Nicholson has taken an in-depth look at CoH character creation in a video he just posted today. This 17-minute visual aid walks us through the process from start to finish, yet explains that it could literally take hours to refine your character exactly to your likings. If 17 minutes seems long, you haven't experienced this character creator first hand! Take a look at the full video linked below the cut, or fly on over to the LE blog for more information.

City of Heroes Issue 13: Power and Responsibility enters Open Beta

Filed under: Super-hero, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Patches, PvP, PvE

A couple of days ago, the latest free expansion for City of Heroes was opened up to public testing. Although the main feature that was originally planned, the Mission Architect, has been put back to issue 14, it's still quite a sizeable package. The main features of the new expansion are a Day Jobs option allowing players to earn benefits and accolades from logging out in specific locations, the Shields and Pain Domination powersets, new missions in the Cimerora zone, and a wealth of changes to PvP and to the Epic and Patron power pools.

It's those latter elements that have drawn the most comment from CoX players. The Epic and Patron changes sought to balance out heroes and villains by replacing unpopular powers with new ones; this, however, brought a backlash from players who either didn't like the new powers they were given, wanted to keep the old ones, or both. In response to the player feedback, this has now been changed: the new powers will simply be added in as additional options instead of replacing the old ones wholesale, the first time in the game's history (so far as we are aware) that powersets have been expanded rather than altered. And there was much rejoicing.

CoX players seek elusive zombie trigger

Filed under: Super-hero, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Events, in-game

As City of Heroes players will know, Paragon City and the Rogue Isles were recently rocked by a wave of zombie invasions, as hordes of the crumbling dead clawed their way up from beneath the lawns and sidewalks. As events go, it was a great success.

It was thought that with the passing of the Season of the Witch, the invasions would cease, and indeed they have; however, recent arcane communications have confirmed that the players can cause an invasion to take place, in a similar way to that in which Rikti invasions are triggered by the completion of a Lady Grey Task Force. This is excellent news for badge collectors, as the chance to earn badges for zombie defeats now won't be limited to a short time window.

Bruce Harlick on City of Heroes story design: Cimerora

Filed under: Super-hero, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Game mechanics

Creating missions and particularly story arcs for City of Heroes/City of Villains is a much more involved process than you might imagine. Rock, Paper, Shotgun's Alec Meer talks to NCsoft's Bruce Harlick, Senior Game Designer about this involuted, and sometimes arcane process.

Harlick waxes at length about the Cimerora story arcs (for both heroes and villains). Lead Mission Writer, John Morrissey, provided the seed ideas and set Harlick to flesh it all out as a part of learning the tools and process to produce the missions with "the mandate of no new assets or code".

Harlick's account of the process gives a revealing look into the way it all works, the frustrations and obstacles, how he clothed his ideas in the MMO's digital flesh, and how he went about breaking Morrissey's mandate in the end. All in all, it is a fascinating look behind the scenes of this popular super-powered MMOG, and we recommend it for those who would like to be enlightened about the process that brings us some of our favorite story moments in Paragon City and the Rogue Isles.
