EverQuest II Game Update 48 now live!

Filed under: Fantasy, EverQuest II, Patches

Who knew corporations could be so sneaky? Sony Online Entertainment has snuck up on the EverQuest 2 playing populace with a brand-new game update! GU48:Breaking Ground has dropped onto the live servers adding a ton of new content to the world of Norrath for players of SOE's flagship game. Here are the highlights of this massive patch:
  • The Guild Hall Event! The cities of Qeynos and Freeport are busily working to build guild housing for EverQuest 2's mightiest organizations. You can help out!
  • Veksar! We first noted the addition of this dungeon back in the Senior Producer's letter to the players, but it's great to see it finally in-game. The dungeons acts as a 'teaser' for content in the upcoming expansion and is appropriate for characters at the highest levels.
  • Everfrost Overhaul! The first in what is likely to be a series of zone re-makes sees this icy realm given much better level progression, more solo content, and even a more intuitive design.
  • Shiny new armor! Armor appearances have been updated and improved across the board, with brand new writs and quests for the non-adventuring-inclined.
  • Tons more, including more zone tweaks, gameplay changes, the addition of a 'guild points' system, UI fixes and spell changes!
You can check out the full and unadulterated patch notes below the cut. Thanks to Stargrace for the tipoff!

One Shots: An overload of Orcs

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, EverQuest II, One Shots

Today's One Shots shows a heroic shot from EverQuest II, showing a brave adventurer who just happened to run up against one too many Orcs. This screenshot comes in to us from Korvin, who plays a Shadowknight in EverQuest II, and said he ran up against this band of nasty orcs in the Commonlands. We understand he also cleaned their clocks, so huzzah to you on your victory, Korvin!

Have you taken on a group when you thought the odds were impossible and triumphed? All screens, all topics, all games are welcome; from the silly to the sunny to the scary! Just bundle them up and send them to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com. It's more fun than letting them gather virtual dust in your screenshot folder.

Take a visual tour of EverQuest II: The Shadow Odyssey's new dungeons

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, EverQuest II, Expansions, Wallpapers

EverQuest II's The Shadow Odyssey expansion is set to launch this November. In addition to heritage quests and the shard reward system, the expansion will add an EverQuest classic -- the dungeon of Guk. And in the days leading up to the launch, EQ2 players will get to start exploring another dungeon: Veksar.

To build up anticipation, SOE is rolling out articles, screenshots, and concept art related to the two new dungeons. For Guk it put together a series of lore-oriented postcards and images explaining what the place is all about, culminating in some concept art wallpapers. The Veksar article is a little more traditional in its presentation, but the substance is all there. We've put together in a gallery all the images from both of those tours.

SOE also released concept art for guild halls, which will be implemented soon. Guild halls date back to Meridian 59 and text MUDs before it, but for some reason they've been out of vogue in the 21st century.

Well met, fellow Norrathian! Make sure to check out all of our coverage of the next EverQuest II expansion, The Shadow Odyssey as well as Seeds of Destruction, the next expansion to EverQuest!

Massively Speaking Episode 20 is a Shawn-less show! More's the pity, Mr. Schuster needed to attend to important issues this week - like a leaking roof. Instead Michael is joined by Mr. Darren Love of the Common Sense Gamer blog. Brenda Holloway, blogger at the West Karana site and Massively columnist, joins the gents to set them straight on the newly announced EQ and EQII expansions. Additional subjects of conversation include the new Conan expansion, Warhammer Online (of course), and the upcoming Module 8 for DDO!

Urban exploration in MMOs

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Age of Conan, EverQuest II, Culture, Guides, Tips and tricks, PvE, Casual, Virtual worlds

Urban exploration and free running are activities normally associated with the real world. In recent years, however, MMOs such as Everquest 2, Age of Conan and World of Warcraft have become a digital stage for the arts. With entire new virtual worlds to explore, no risk of injury and no physical fitness required, it's understandable that many would-be free runners are going digital.

In this article, I take a visual tour of the world of urban exploration and rooftop running in MMOs and explain how you can learn to clamber onto the rooftops in your favourite game.

What you need to know about The Shadow Odyssey

Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, EverQuest II, Classes, Events, in-game, Expansions, Guilds, Patches, Previews, Crafting, Player Housing, Massively highlights

The Shadow Odyssey, EverQuest II's fifth expansion, is not just the usual bump to the level cap, a couple of new raids, and a reset for all the armor you already got. It's none of those things. What SOE has done with this expansion is go through the level 50 to level 80 portion of the game and say, let's make an expansion that has something for pretty much everyone. Let's make an expansion where even if no upgrades drop, you can be working toward some awesome stuff just by playing.

The original EverQuest started out as a supremely casual and social game. It was the players that pushed SOE to make the game more raid focused, but sometime after the heavily raid-oriented Planes of Power expansion, the casual players asked when they'd get an expansion for them. SOE came out with the Lost Dungeons of Norrath, which offered three or four variants at each of six dungeons, meant for single groups of averagely-equipped players. The difficulty and mission type could be selected, and every time you completed a mission, you got points with which you could buy hard-to-find spells, armor of near raid quality, adornments which would push that armor into the quality of raid gear, and some cool stuff only available through the LDoN merchants.

The Shadow Odyssey is EverQuest II's Lost Dungeons of Norrath -- and more. Click on through to see why TSO might be the best EQ2 expansion yet.

The Daily Grind: EverQuest expanding

Filed under: Fantasy, EverQuest, EverQuest II, Expansions, New titles, The Daily Grind

Yesterday evening at Fan Faire, SOE announced expansions for EverQuest and EverQuest 2: Seeds of Destruction and The Shadow Odyssey, respectively. This will be EQ's 15th expansion and EQ2's 4th, with SoD promising 20 new zones and a new level cap of 85; and SO promising new zones, new dungeons, new quests, and additional achievement points. But what we're wondering is: how long can a game last? (15 expansions at least, apparently!) How long can expansion packs up the excitement factor? Tell us, will these new expansions keep you playing? Will they bring you back into the game? And if so, what has you excited about the latest additions to SOE's online world?

Exploring The Shadow Odyssey with EQII Senior Producer Bruce Ferguson

Filed under: Fantasy, EverQuest II, Expansions, New titles, Massively Event Coverage

SOE just announced the newest expansion to their EverQuest II title, and we've got plenty of answers for your burning questions. We had the chance to sit down with the game's Senior Producer, Bruce Ferguson, to talk about what makes this such an important product for Sony Online. Join us as we talk through some of the fantastic new content coming to the game.

Some of it is "old content", revamped and updated areas from the original vision of Norrath the company created back in 1999. Befallen and Guk are fan favorites, and are making a comeback with a vengeance. Some of it is distinctly new, like the shard system that will allow players to customize their loot for the first time ever. And some of it is a mix of both! Read on for full details on this interesting new product.

SOE announces the next EverQuest II expansion: The Shadow Odyssey

Filed under: Fantasy, EverQuest II, Expansions, New titles, Massively Event Coverage

Just moments ago in Las Vegas, Nevada SOE CEO John Smedley took the stage to announce the next expansion for the company's flagship product, EverQuest II. The fourth expansion to reach the game will be entitled The Shadow Odyssey, and is slated for release to players on November 18th of this year. The expansion will seek to expand on themes begun with the best-selling Rise of Kunark expansion, returning a number of nostalgic elements to the shattered world of Norrath. Players familiar with the Lost Dungeons of Norrath expansion to the original EverQuest may find several similarities in this newest content release, which is slated to include a number of instanced dungeons.

Other feature highlights include:
  • Brand new zones with some old favorite names. Innothule Swamp?
  • Wall-to-wall dungeon crawling, revisiting some of the highlight real best of the original EverQuest. Guk, Mistmoore, and Befallen are all ripe for the picking.
  • No new level increase, but a big bump in the number of Achievement points you can get - up to 200. Additionally, the expansion will feature brand new class-specific AA lines!
  • Tons more, including new deities, new Heritage quests, and a new 'Shard' system that will let you pick your loot rewards instead of hoping for drops!
Read on below the cut for the full press release, and be sure to explore our exclusive interview with EverQuest II Senior Producer for Bruce Ferguson all about the upcoming expansion.

Celebrating 10 years of EverQuest customer service volunteers

Filed under: Fantasy, EverQuest, EverQuest II, News items

SOE and the EverQuest II community are celebrating the ten year anniversary of EverQuest's Guide program. Guides are folks who volunteer to provide customer support to players, as well as host in-game events. Rremember back in the day when Qeynos Hills was invaded by skeletons, and all the newbies died before higher levels came in from the Karanas to save the day? That event was the work of Guides!

An article over at EverQuest II Players heralds the celebration with memories from both a former and a current Guide Liaison, as well as a story by well-known Elder Guide Ozymandias honoring all the folks who have served the community over the years. The story is written like an historical lore entry. It contains a few references to legendary names that should be familiar to EverQuest veterans.

Volunteer guides are a very old tradition in MMOs. Of course there were the Wizards of the MUD era. But after that, both Meridian 59 and Ultima Online made use of volunteer customer service and event folks too.

EverQuest II seeks more Living Legacies until Sept. 30th

Filed under: Fantasy, EverQuest, EverQuest II, Events, in-game, News items

Apparently happy with results from earlier in the summer, SOE has added a new phase to the Living Legacy program. This time, all inactive EverQuest accounts may now try EverQuest II and all its expansions for free until September 30th. Yes, you read that right: inactive EverQuest accounts, not EverQuest II accounts. Looks like SOE is trying to bring old customers into the 21st century!

Participants also get $5 towards the purchase of this fall's new expansion (assuming they upgrade to a paying account) and a bunch of in-game items including a pet drake, a 12-slot bag, and a bag of XP potions. Word on the street is that the previous iteration of the Living Legacy program was a big success, so SOE is probably trying to keep the ball rolling.

Note, though, that this isn't being offered to current EverQuest subscribers, just lapsed ones. Apparently SOE doesn't want to lose current EQ players to EQ2, but if you're playing neither right now, it wants you to play the more modern one. Makes sense.

Behind the scenes with Tradeskill quest design in EverQuest 2

Filed under: Fantasy, EverQuest II, Crafting

Emily "Domino" Taylor once again takes us behind the scenes to look at crafting in EverQuest 2. Late last week on the official EQ2 blog, she offered up some insights into how crafting and questing have come together in the game. Where once 'questing' for tradeskill folks was just repetitive grindy nonsense, Domino has made a concerted effort to inject some of those great story elements into the crafting experience.

She talks primarily about how she puts quests together. With some the designer goes 'reward first', coming up with an item or skill that she wants to get into the player's hands. Then she works backwards to understand how a stalwart crafter might come upon such an item. With others, like the Epic Tradeskill quests, it's more important to tell a specific story. The details she notes about creating the Epic quests are particularly interesting; read on through to the EQ2 blog for full details.

Station Voice goes live today in EQ2 and SWG

Filed under: EverQuest II, News items, Star Wars Galaxies

Back in February, we reported on EverQuest II's announcement of built-in chat coming to the game. Today, Sony Online Entertainment officially announced that Station Voice has arrived not only in EQ2, but also in Star Wars Galaxies and is coming to EverQuest next month.

What's included in the Vivox technology? Along with the usual controls you'd expect (moderation, private channels, etc.) you can set the levels of each person in group. Always good to have when dealing with the serial shouter that inevitably ends up in your group/raid. Other features are planned including the ability to mask your voice in different ways and to talk to your friends in-game without having the game loaded up yourself.

More information can be found on the new Station Voice page.
