Guild Wars Wintersday in July event

Filed under: Fantasy, Guild Wars, Events, in-game

If you've ever experienced the joy of Wintersday in Guild Wars throughout the years, you may be excited by the news that ArenaNet is bringing Wintersday back for a brief time this coming weekend. It's part of their Wintersday in July event beginning at noon PDT on Friday, July 18th and running until 11:59 PM PDT on Sunday, July 20th.

This event will not be the full Wintersday festivities, but there will still be access the the Snowball Arena in Lion's Arch, Droknar's Forge, Ascalon City, Kamadan and the Great Temple of Balthazar. There will also be Wintersday-themed drops from all monsters throughout Tyria. You could probably consider this Wintersday-lite, since there will be no battle between Grenth and Dwayna, and no special headgear given away.

One Shots: Shiverpeaks snow

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Guild Wars, One Shots

While the news is heating up from E3, we have a fantastic Guild Wars screenshot to cool your afternoon off with. This gorgeous screenshot was sent in to us by Hawk Nevermore, who gave us all the information on this breathtaking bit of frozen landscape. Hawk writes:

The Shiverpeaks were once the heart of the Deldrimor Dwarves' kingdom. But with the combination of civil war with the Stone Summit and the devastation of the Destroyers, the proud Deldrimor kingdom is broken. Few tread on these forsaken, frozen passes, save the most intrepid adventurers. Infested by Ice Imps and abandoned Siege Ice Elementals once employed by the Stone Summit, it is an unforgiving land where only the strong can survive.

Well, there goes our idea on a good place to set up a ski lodge. Have you found a lovely landscape? If so, what are you waiting for! Grab those gorgeous scapes and send them in to us here at oneshots AT massively.com along with a tantalizing tidbit about the area. You know you want to.

NCsoft's upcoming summer tour around the Globe

Runes of Magic beta registration and website opens

Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Forums, New titles, News items, Free-to-play, Runes of Magic

Runes of Magic, the eerily-similar-to-World of Warcraft Asian import being published in Europe by Frogster and in North America by persons as yet unknown* has just opened beta registration on their shiny new website. Runes of Magic, known as Radiant Arcana in Asia, will be free to play and has super high production values, so heck, why not check it out? Being able to have two jobs at once a la Final Fantasy XI and Guild Wars could be pretty cool, so if you've ever wanted to be a hunter/priest in WoW, well, now you can (except they call their hunters "scouts").

We'll have more about Runes of Magic once beta opens, but you can discuss the game with other eager prospective players in their newly-opened forums. Prize for best question so far: "will the leveling system be like WoW ( few weeks to reach max level) or a shorter leveling system?". Because it took FOREVER to reach max level in WoW when it was released. You know your WoW-like is on the right track when people wonder how to get past the boring stuff to the good stuff at max level before they've even seen the game.

* hey, Frogster, who is going to bring The Chronicles of Spellborn to North America?

Guild Wars Guru GvG Challenge 2008 starts this weekend

Filed under: Fantasy, Guild Wars, Contests, Events, in-game, Forums, PvP

If you've thought about joining the Guild Wars Guru GvG Contest, but just haven't gotten around to it yet, you still have time! Guild registration will close tomorrow at 12PM EDT and there are still a few spots left.

If you're unfamiliar with this contest, it is a guild vs guild battle arranged into 5 separate divisions, much like tournaments of the past. There is a division for premier guilds, gold guilds, silver guilds, bronze guilds and casual. The tournament will take place on Saturday, July 12th and the prizes are certainly nothing to scoff at. The grand prizes include a Shiro'ken mini-pet, 500 Tournament Reward Points and a Compaq Presario laptop. Well, at least the mini-pet and reward points are cool.

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Guild Wars, One Shots

It's almost the weekend, and while that means many of the Joystiq network crew (including some of the Massively staff) will be on the road for E3, it means it's time for relaxation for many others! Today's One Shot comes to us from Hawk Nevermore, who snapped this lovely screenshot in Guild Wars. This is definitely the kind of place we'd love to spend a weekend -- relaxing on the shore, swimming, sailing, or adventuring in a ruined city! Hawk writes:

Fahranur the First City was the home of the Primeval Kings, who once ruled all of Elona. Decimated by the Scarab Plague and abandoned by the Istani, it is but a shadow of its former grandeur. Its grand exterior shows nothing of the pain that still resides in its shattered halls.

Pain? Well, okay, maybe that's not the best vacation destination -- but it certainly looks pretty anyway. Have you found a lovely vista in your travels around your favorite game world? Perhaps you just want to see your own screenshots here on Massively so you can show your friends. Whatever your reason, toss those screenshots into an email and send them to us here at oneshots AT massively.com along with a quick blurb about what we're seeing. And be sure to check back with us all next week as we bring the news from E3 to you!

Why do you pay for your games each month?

Filed under: Business models, MMO industry, Opinion

How much game do you need to support a monthly fee? That's a question Tobold asked in his blog, noting that there are a number of games charging for monthly subs that would be better off with alternative business models. He cites the example of the in-beta Football Manager Live, which he feels is niche in the first place, and coupled with great complexity and minimal graphics, wouldn't exactly draw crowds of subscribers. Tobold thinks that a higher cost to purchase the game and then offering a free basic version would be a more appealing option for some players. And for those who are hardcore about the game, a subscription that would include more detailed statistics would be a better fit.

He notes titles like Diablo, Hellgate: London and Guild Wars -- games which eschewed the standard subscription model for either box sales or partial subscriptions. This led him wonder what exactly we expect from a game we're willing to subscribe to. Tobold asks: What are you willing to pay a monthly fee for, and where do you balk at the cost? Are there specific features which you think justify a monthly fee? Sound off if you have some ideas about what makes your game of choice worthy of your sub money each month. Or if your preferred MMO isn't a subscription title, what drew you to that game?

Back to the Future: A guide to GW's Hall of Monuments

Filed under: Fantasy, Galleries, Screenshots, Guild Wars, Game mechanics, Guides, PvE, Guild Wars 2, Education

Who doesn't love to brag about their accomplishments and show off their stuff? Luckily for Guild Wars players, the addition of the Hall of Monuments with last year's Eye of the North expansion allows a new way to show off what you've achieved in game and the very best high-end items you've obtained. However, the Hall of Monuments is so much more. It's also a way to transfer these items into the future for all of your descendants in Guild Wars 2 to enjoy.

It really is a fascinating idea, when you think about it. Accomplishments are meant to be displayed; that's the easy part. Creating the HoM as a portal from the GW1 storyline into the GW2 storyline is where it gets good. Also, with the HoM, ArenaNet has solved that problem where the original GW1 characters won't be transferable between games (because of the complete revamp of the game engine), but their historical items will. Kind of like inheriting granny's favorite doily collection, except with swords and axes.

Interview with ArenaNet's Jeff Strain reveals more GW2 info

Filed under: Fantasy, Events, real-world, Forums, Game mechanics, Interviews, New titles, Guild Wars 2

In a recent interview with the German PC Games magazine, ArenaNet co-founder Jeff Strain gives us a few more tidbits of info involving what we can expect with Guild Wars 2. The interview is completely in German, and the existing English translations are questionable, but the main theme revolves around ten facts about Guild Wars 2 from the mouth of Strain himself. Most of these facts we've heard before in other interviews, but some we haven't.

For instance, we get an example of a tremendous world event in the new persistent world. This involves the scenario of a dragon destroying an important town bridge, and it's up to you to defeat the dragon and defend the town NPCs as they rebuild. Items will have more importance in GW2 and it's said that there will no longer be characters made strictly for PvP. Be sure to read more on the English-translated version, the original German version and an important forum thread for more player reaction.

ArenaNet to host 2nd annual PAX afterparty

Filed under: Fantasy, Real life, Aion, City of Heroes, Dungeon Runners, Guild Wars, Contests, Events, real-world, MMO industry, Tabula Rasa, Exteel

Once again, NCsoft and ArenaNet will be making an appearance at Seattle's Penny Arcade Expo this year. The NCsoft booth (#642) will be packed full goodies during the weekend of August 29th through the 31st, and they will be showing off some of their new and old favorites, including Exteel, Dungeon Runners, Guild Wars, City of Heroes, Tabula Rasa and the brand new Aion.

As they did last year, ArenaNet will be holding contests where participants can win valuable prizes. Developers will also be on hand to meet and greet with the players. Possibly the most exciting news is the fact that ArenaNet will hold another after-party at the Game Works across the street from the Washington State Convention & Trade Center, as they did last year. This is your chance to meet the folks at ArenaNet in a more casual setting and even challenge a few to an arcade game or two!

WRUP: Playing with fireworks edition

So what are you going to be playing in the world of MMOs this holiday weekend? Leave a comment below and let us know which games you'll be playing on your day off this weekend (or, if you're not in America, which games you'll be playing when you get off of work).

And from all of us at Massively, have a safe and happy Fourth of July!

Guild Wars skill update: The nerfing of Shadow Form

Filed under: Fantasy, Guild Wars, Forums, Game mechanics, Professions, PvE

The ups and downs of the Assassin skill Shadow Form has been quite the topic of debate lately in Guild Wars. Back in May, the skill had its duration increased which made it the perfect skill for ecto farming builds in the Underworld. The inevitable progression from there evolved into ecto and shard prices dropping dramatically from the over-farming of all the big farm spots. However, in the June 2nd skill update, Shadow Form had quite a change. Now, the caster does 50% less damage while Shadow Form is active on them. Not only that, but the Mindblade Spectres in the Underworld have received Hex Breaker to help combat the hex-based farming builds that have always been so popular in this area.

Now the question is, do you think this is a good thing or a bad thing? Of course, if you're one of the people who farmed ecto with your A/E Chaos Planes farmer, you might not be very excited by this update. We've found that generally, most players do welcome this change though. Not only for the projected rise in ecto prices (making them worth obtaining the old way, and selling on the market again), but also to give a bit of credibility back to the Assassins who enjoyed their class for what it was before they became easy money-makers.

One Shots: Not a warm summer screen

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Guild Wars, One Shots

As many of us enjoy very warm weather for the upcoming holiday weekend, we thought we'd flash back to a cold holiday of yesteryear. Today's Guild Wars One Shots screen comes to us from Eugaet, who created this during the 2005 Guild Wars holiday event. Eugaet writes: I had planned on creating panoramas for every location in the game, including 'holiday' versions...but I ended up not having much time to devote to the project. Even so, they're still lovely panoramas to look at -- especially the full-size version!

If you're heading out in your favorite virtual lands to enjoy the celebrations, snap some screenshots of what you and your friends are doing. We'd love to show off some of the things going on this weekend, but we need your help! So snag those screenshots and send them to us at oneshots AT massively.com along with a quick blurb as to what we're seeing.
