Mandalorians smack down the Jedi in SWTOR's new timeline update

One of the most common questions asked regarding Star Wars: The Old Republic and the easily accessible Jedi is, "Who's going to take on an army of Jedi?" We've long since had the answer tucked away here at Massively, but now BioWare has been kind enough to illustrate it for us in their latest timeline update, which features the fearsome Mandalorians.

The nomadic Mandalorians are strikingly unique and much like the Jedi and Sith in that sense they're not an actual species; yet war is their singular goal in life. Their mantra is that strength is not merely good, it is great, it brings honor through battle. Thus, it's no surprise that Mandalorians are generally opposed to the Jedi and get along better with the power hungry Sith. At this point, the Republic Trooper's coutnerpart is pretty obvious. That powerful Jedi army doesn't seem so intimidating against legions of Sith, Bounty Hunters and bred-for-war Mandies, now does it?

We highly recommend you check out the timeline video. It's not only informative, but quite entertaining if you've got even the slightest amount of interest in Star Wars: The Old Republic.

E3 2009: Star Wars: The Old Republic is world's first 'fully-voiced' MMO

During this afternoon's EA press conference for E3, Bioware and LucasArts announced that the upcoming MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic will be the world's first fully voiced MMO featuring 'hundreds of thousands of lines of dialogue'. The announcement came during the concluding minutes of EA's event and featured numerous lightsaber-wielding Jedi mounting the stage, two of whom revealed themselves as representatives of Bioware and LucasArts.

The two companies touted the game as 'the largest voice over project in the history of games and maybe across all areas of entertainment'. As well as premiering a new Jedi versus Sith trailer (which you can see after the jump), they revealed that every class has its own unique storyline.

Bioware owns you... or at least your fan art

Games and fan art go together like mashed potatoes and gravy -- you just don't have one with out the other. But how would you feel if you found a legal disclaimer in your favorite game's website terms of service that claimed that any fan art you produce, regardless of your intentions, is owned by the game company just because you depicted the IP?

That's what Woody Hearn from GU Comics found inside of the Bioware Tems of Service on the Star Wars: The Old Republic website. The paragraph in question (found in section 7 of the terms) essentially states that all fan art derived from any intellectual property of LucasArts and/or Bioware is explicitly the property of LucasArts and/or Bioware. So that stormtrooper picture that you drew? Yeah, it belongs to LucasArts.

Hearn has already explicitly stated that GU Comics won't be featuring any more Star Wars: The Old Republic or other LucasArts / Bioware titles until the policy changes. While he is covered under the fair use law for satire, any other pieces drawn by other artists may not be.

Threat of Peace issue #4, need we say more?

The Sith have strange ways about them; strange but effective means of getting exactly what they want. This is why when Coruscant came under siege by the Sith Empire just as they were beginning peace talks with the Galactic Republic, we had a feeling there was an deeper motive beneath the obvious. It all becomes clear in this week's issue number four of BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic webcomic, Threat of Peace.

Beyond here things should only get more interesting. We're hoping for a timeline update next week along with issue five, because at four pages a pop the cliffhangers can sometimes be a real pain in our geeky butts.

The Old Republic launches first issue of Dark Horse webcomic

Today marks the first installment of the Star Wars: The Old Republic online webcomic series that we first mentioned earlier in the month. This webcomic has been created as a joint venture between BioWare, LucasArts and Dark Horse comics, and offers fans an opportunity to discover the Old Republic era in preparation for the yet-unannounced launch date for the TOR MMO.

In this introductory issue entitled Act 1: Treaty of Coruscant, the Jedi and the Republic maintain control of core worlds while the Sith Empire continues its military victories over critical star systems. The desperate Republic accepts a surprising offer of peace from the Empire, as key members of the Senate, Jedi and Sith Dark Council join together for the terms of their new treaty. Check out the entire comic at the SWTOR website and look for more issues to arrive twice a month.

BioWare and Dark Horse team up for The Old Republic webcomic

The official Old Republic website has a great announcement up today, undoubtedly the surprise that Sean Dahlberg mentioned in yesterday's Friday design post. In collaboration with Dark Horse Comics, BioWare writer Rob Chestney is going to be penning a comic book entirely within the world of Star Wars: The Old Republic. What's even better: the comic will be entirely web-based and free to read.

Here's the precis: "War between the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire has gripped the galaxy for generations, but the sacking of Coruscant and a subsequent peace treaty are changing everything. As the Republic scrambles to re-establish order, the Sith Empire moves quickly to consolidate power within its new dominion. Behind closed doors, however, individual Sith Lords engage in a quiet but deadly power struggle, and discord breaks out among the Jedi as they wrestle with the moral implications of the new galactic balance. During these chaotic days, the stories of several critical characters interweave as they pursue their passions, stand up for their convictions and ultimately lead the galaxy back to the brink of a catastrophic conflict."

Defining the design process for Star Wars: The Old Republic

Every Friday like clockwork the fine folks at BioWare Austin offer up a new tidbit to sink our teeth into. Last week was kind of a blowout, with the enormous video of Tython and how it was made. If you haven't had a chance to check out the best look we've had to date at Star Wars: The Old Republic, you owe it to yourself to do so. This week's offering was quite a bit more focused, delving into the design process used by the team to create a piece of the gameworld. Dallas Dickinson, Senior Content Designer for the game, walks us through the numerous steps required to get even one planet prepped for play.

Beginning with the all-important research phase, the designers and developers iterate endlessly on the dialogue, writing, area layout, and art of a planet. What's striking is the sheer amount of interdependency and coordination required for something of this scale. Get a sense of that scale by reading through Dickinson's entry and mulling through the enormous amount of content the developers released last week to accompany the Tython video.

Did LucasArts invent the avatar-based virtual world in 1985?

The computer gaming industry of the 1980s was akin to the automotive industry in the 1950s: experimental and courageous. LucasArts (through a branch known then as Lucasfilm Games) had the money to throw around in game development at the time. As we can read in a new book, one of their experiments was at least a decade ahead of its time.

This book, entitled Rogue Leaders: The Story of LucasArts, chronicles the history of George Lucas' vision through more than just his films. A project entitled Habitat enabled Commodore 64 users to create an avatar and chat with other players in a simple virtual world via a modem. Despite the fact that this game never got off the ground, its ideas were still brand new to everyone. Why didn't the project ever see the light of day? There were several reasons, but mainly the fact that C64 users were paying CompuServe $12 an hour for network access back then. This innovation also pushed Commodore to invest in a new company called Quantum Computer Services to undercut CompuServe with rates "as low as" $3.60 an hour. Quantum Computer Services eventually changed their name to America Online. Sound interesting? Penny Arcade comments on Old Republic footage

The Old Republic's latest video footage had some people drooling over the release of the highly anticipated BioWare title, but others, like Tycho from Penny Arcade, weren't too impressed during the latest trailer.

Tycho's comments, while negative, can ring truthful to those who have been following SWTOR since the great announcement back in October. It seems that we keep hearing about this great "story pillar" of the game and how most MMOs don't contain an intense storyline, but veterans of Asheron's Call's monthly updates or Wrath of the Lich King's new emphasis on story will certainly recall that some games have already put story in as their main pillar.

Of course, Tycho also brings up the fact that it's odd for someone with an infinitely sharp laser beam sword to slash at the same monster multiple times, but we think you get the idea. Massively's best of - Biggest surprise of 2008

This year's Biggest Surprise goes to the news that Tabula Rasa is closing for good in February of 2009. Some might think this was no surprise at all, considering the exodus of players over the past year, and the recent news of Richard Garriott leaving NCsoft to pursue other interests. We chose it because of the vivid community still surrounding it, with the actual finality of a closure a surprise to us all.

What makes this an even larger surprise is the fact that the September closure rumors were quickly denied by NCsoft themselves. Recent reports of several new and exciting game features, plus the announcement that players would have a chance to return to Earth in the game made us firmly believe that TR was making a strong comeback. In game, we started to see more players running around in the world, more players in chat and full groups again. The PlanetTR weekly events were filling up like they did in the old days, and we were optimistic.

For whatever reason it was too little, too late for NCsoft. The publisher is not in the market of losing money, and we understand that. Yet if we see another closure of an NCsoft title any time soon, it certainly won't be on our Biggest Surprise list.

Massively's best of - Game we're most looking forward to

If called this you did, strong in the Force are you.

Actually, you probably didn't need to be a Jedi prognosticator to see this coming. Star Wars: The Old Republic is a game that MMO nerds have been awaiting for years. Re-uniting the Star Wars IP with MMO gameplay in a new format, reviving the very popular Knights of the Old Republic setting, SWTOR was a sure-fired win with the Massively staff long before the announcement.

That said, we've been pretty well blown away by every scrap of information BioWare has released to date. The focus on storytelling in the game, the companion concept, the idea of meshing character class and progression experience so closely together ... they all sound like elements we've been waiting for in MMOs for years. We're particularly excited about the idea a branching storyline that allows us to make real decisions in a persistent universe. Even the illusion of decision is so often denied us in MMOs, the tantalizing hope the SWTOR developers hold out is tempting indeed.

And, of course, there's gobs more to like just in what they've already talked about. "Choreographed" combat, a crafting system that actually lets you have fun, the feeling of being an epic hero from level 1 ... it's like a group of forum users got together and made a 'best of' list, then turned it into a design doc.

With the release of the game so far off, at this point we're just hopeful the finished product somewhat resembles the promised feature set. With the boys at BioWare behind the development and industry veterans like Gordon Walton at the helm, we're more hopeful about The Old Republic than almost any other game on the horizon. It's definitely the game we're most looking forward to in 2008, and is likely to keep this spot well into next year.

Picking apart the first Star Wars: The Old Republic video piece by piece

The first video for Star Wars: The Old Republic is out now, and with its release comes the first of many posts and features wherein we look at every possible angle or detail in the new information and try to discern what it could all really mean. So let's take a look at the list we've put together for the very first in-game footage:

  • Kel'dor are playable. (possible)
  • Bounty Hunter is a player class. (possible)
  • Companions fight with you in combat. (confirmed)
  • The art style picked by BioWare works much better in motion than in screens. (confirmed)
  • BioWare is holding back on a big game feature yet to be revealed. (speculation)
  • Combat similar to KOTOR, but much faster-paced and with a lot more "Whoa" attacks and effects. (confirmed/possible)
  • Players who go extreme lightside or darkside may not be able to play with each other. (speculation)
  • BioWare is totally psyched to be working with LucasArts on making another Star Wars game. (confirmed, like totally)
We're anxiously awaiting the next video so that we may once again devour it with a geeky hunger like no other.

First Star Wars: The Old Republic video offering now available!

As promised yesterday, the first video offering from the Star Wars: The Old Republic team is now available! Though it's only about five minutes, it offers a ton of great insight into what BioWare and LucasArts will be offering with this title. There's no obvious new information, but there are a bunch of subtle hints about what we might expect to see this ambitious MMO experience. Whether mictrotransactional or not, this game is going to be a one-of-a-kind offering for the genre ... and here's your chance to see the first footage!

SOE's Station Cash won't be coming to Star Wars Galaxies, Vanguard

As a followup to the announcement of Sony Online Entertainment's Station Cash system earlier this week we had the chance to speak with Mr. John Smedley, CEO of that company. The full interview with Mr. Smedley will be posted tomorrow, but one question we've seen here in comments and elsewhere in forums seemed like it was worth addressing right away. The initial rollout of this Station Cash service was only to EverQuest and EverQuest II. The question naturally follows: will this see use in other SOE titles?

As you might have guessed, Station Cash will play a prominent role in the company's upcoming free-to-play title Free Realms. It's also likely to play some role in DC Universe Online and The Agency, though Mr. Smedley was unwilling to commit to any details on those plans. As far as other, already launched SOE titles, the answer is probably a no. According to Mr. Smedley they haven't even raised the issue of using Station Cash in Star Wars Galaxies with LucasArts, and at this time they don't have any plans to bring the service to their other titles. This would mean Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, The Matrix Online, and Planetside will remain without the Station Cash service.

A first look at SWTOR's in-game footage coming tomorrow

LucasArts and BioWare have just announced that their first video documentary for Star Wars: The Old Republic will be posted on that game's official website tomorrow, December 12th. There is no mention of an exact time, but you can bet fans of this upcoming mega MMO will be watching intently. Ladies and Gentlemen, man your refresh buttons!

This video is said to show an overview of the game and provide the public with its first look at actual in-game footage.
