Rumor Mill: EverQuest 2's Senior Producer quits, Scott Hartsman leaving SOE

Filed under: EverQuest II, MMO industry, News items

A surprising rumor regarding EQ2's Senior Producer, Scott Hartsman aka Gallenite, is spreading across various MMOG forums claiming that he has parted ways with SOE. What makes this rumor noteworthy and more than likely veritable is that it originates from the administrator who runs EQ2 Flames, one of the more popular EQ2 fan forums. According to Scott Hartsman's bio on his personal blog he has been with Sony Online Entertainment for over six years and his first SOE credit is EverQuest: Shadows of Luclin. If Scott Hartsman is leaving to pursue other interests we here at Massively wish him the best of luck, but I don't think he needs it!

If this rumor turns out to be true it would be a huge blow to the EverQuest 2 development team and the EverQuest 2 community. Scott Hartsman is a class act, and is one of the best in his field at what he does. Whoever steps in to try and fill his shoes will have a hell of a time as Hartsman has not only set the bar high when it comes to running the show, but his superb ability to manage community relationships and wax philosophic with the players. During his tenure as on EverQuest 2's, Senior Producer, Hartsman has established a remarkable reputation not only amongst his peers, but also among the more tight-knit MMOG forum goers, which by any means is no easy feat.

I'm a bit shocked, especially to see this coming so shortly after Rise of Kunark's launch, and various recent interviews conducted with Hartsman about the expansion, including our own with Michael Zenke regarding grouping concerns in Rise of Kunark. What do you guys think about all this? I wonder if Hartsman will go on to work on another MMOG. If the rumor turns out to be true is EverQuest 2 screwed or is this rumor unfounded, and shouldn't have been reported by Massively? Let us know in the comments.

Ultima Online shake-up: incoming developer layoffs, team restructuring and relocation imminent

Filed under: MMO industry, News items, Ultima Online

Ultima Online recently celebrated its 10 year birthday and even launched a shiny new expansion titled Kingdom Reborn that received mixed reviews. The celebration is soon to end with heads rolling as many Ultima Online developers will be pushed into the unemployment line after John Riccitiello, CEO of Electronic Arts, sent out a Dear John letter -- tasking every studio and company under EA's conglomeration to make the necessary cutbacks to adjust resources accordingly against rising costs. (EA corporate raid gathering: "Fools, prepare the chopping block!")

Chris Rabideau, Ultima Online Producer, posted on the Ultima Online Herald that the Ultima Online team will be moving from its current station located at EA's headquarters outside of San Francisco, CA to EA Mythic's studios located in Fairfax, VA. Rabideau claims that development on the game will continue as planned and the move will have very little impact in the short term on the game and community . Nowhere in his letter to the community does he acknowledge any lay-offs, but an anonymous source has come forward claiming he is and is clearly devastated. (I can not confirm or deny this source).

"There is nothing to lose for me to post this and I admit I feel bitter, so why not let you know the truth?

Alot of the UO team was laid off today including me and all of QA.

We were escorted out of the building and not even allowed to email our goodbye email to everyone else. They even had managers watching us the whole time like we had done something wrong.

Most of the engineers are already working on Warhammer.

Most of the rest of the UO team is not going to Virginia. Only one person is moving fore sure and maybe one or two more are considering it too. That’s it. Almost all of the famous devs are not going.

Almost everyone on the list posted earlier by someone is not going to Virginia for sure.

Early December is when everyone who does not move to Virginia is laid off too.

I hope that something I did for UO is something that you found fun. We really did try to do our best.

Maybe I will see you all in another not EA game soon!"

Business as usual, but you know it's that stinky EA business. While it's plausible Ultima Online will benefit from this move later down the road; thanks to more resources available under one roof, all the UO and DAOC devs doing quality assurance on Warhammer: Age of Reckoning, that sort of thing. One thing is certain and that is you can't replace a dedicated developer who worked on the project for years and poured everything they had and expect the same results from their replacement or non-replacement in some cases. I guess we can expect a skeleton crew for UO from here on out.

Do you think these corporate lay-offs stem from Electronic Arts spending 600 plus million dollars to purchase Bioware?

Why Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising and not Star Trek Online?

Filed under: Fantasy, Sci-fi, Gods and Heroes, MMO industry, New titles, Star Trek Online

I'm still lamenting a loss, Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising sacked in the Forum. It was right there, so close to the finish line, it wasn't perfect but it could've shipped. Other MMOGS have shipped in such states to go on and perhaps perform well enough to linger around and improve down the line. Perpetual Entertainment weighed the costs and decided that all their resources would be better spent on Stark Trek Online and their Publishing Platform, one of them had to go, there was no way around it unless there was a hidden cache of Roman gold buried outside their offices and a super secret development team stashed away. I admire the decision, when it was all said and done Gods & Heroes wasn't up to Perpetual's standards and they had the moxie to cancel it -- a project years in the making halted. That takes guts, but why not place Star Trek Online on indefinite hold and delay its development for a year or two instead and finish Gods & Heroes?

Before the Trekkies bust out their homemade laser-pointer phasers, let me tip you all off on a little something. MMOGS based off a movie, book, music video, cereal box, or whatever fancy pants intellectual property are extremely difficult to pull-off. The past has already proven that these superstar franchises when converted into a MMOG don't perform as expected and usually disappoint the majority fanbase. The only exception to this rule is Lord of the Rings Online, but even so the subscriptions speak for themselves -- it's doing alright, but is Lord of the Rings Online a runaway success? I don't think so, otherwise the server crews would rapidly deploy brand spankin' new servers because they can't keep the players off them ala WoW's first year. I like the content in Lord of the Rings Online, and if you love it that's great, because in the grand scheme of things that's all that matters.

The main reason why developing a MMOG based off a license as prominent and detailed as Star Trek is that it's impossible to meet all the diehard fanbois and fangrrls expectations. If it doesn't live up to the hype they will revolt on a whim if the transition to the online world doesn't match up to the original canon, stories, novels, what makes up the wondrous Star Trek Universe. When you add in all the other factors that make a MMOG world and mix it up sometimes it just doesn't work. Well, here's to hoping they can pull it off or the loss of Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising will be all for naught and that would be the true shame. It's going to be a long wait to find out.
