Neo Steam kicks off Golden Ticket beta promotion

Filed under: Betas, Trailers, Video, Contests, Events, real-world, New titles, News items, Neo Steam

Atlus Online has just announced their newest promotion, giving its community the chance to get an early look at their steampunk MMO entitled Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent. You may remember our coverage of Neo Steam from GDC earlier this year which revealed quite a bit of information on Atlus Online's first MMO.

This Golden Ticket beta promotion offers prizes and exclusive in-game items (such as the goggles shown above) for all community members who register between now and May 12th. Golden Tickets will be randomly distributed each day as the deadline approaches. Since this is only the first round of beta access, additional opportunities will be announced throughout May. Be sure to check out Neo Steam's website to sign up for beta access, and continue right after the jump for the newest official Neo Steam trailer.

Massively and Cities XL team up for special closed beta promotion

Filed under: Betas, Events, real-world, Events, in-game, New titles, News items

One of the most popular requests from Massively readers is more coverage for MMOs that break the traditional fantasy or sci-fi mold. How about an MMO based on city building and municipal management? Cities XL from Monte Cristo Multimedia is an upcoming MMO that not only breaks the mold, but it takes the MMO genre into territories not yet explored.

To help celebrate today's closed beta announcement for the game, Monte Cristo has joined forces with Massively to provide an exclusive promotional code to help our readers get a better chance at being selected for closed beta access to the game. Keep reading below for more information on what Cities XL actually is, including an exclusive Q&A with the developers. Plus, we have complete details on the promotional code event, video trailers, a screenshot gallery and more!

Age of Conan begins 7-day free trial period

Filed under: Fantasy, Age of Conan, Contests

During last week's GDC interview with Craig Morrison, the Age of Conan game director spoke with us about the future of the game and the new direction the team is taking to get new players in and old players back. One of those methods he mentioned was a free trial "coming next week". The prophecy has come true, and the Age of Conan free trial giveaways have begun!

You can head over to the AoC main site to download your very own 7-day trial (and promotional video), or look for site-specific trials popping up on various MMO fan outlets. Such examples include MMORPG.com and Eurogamer whose limited free trials come with three exciting in-game bonuses: a Totem of Origins which lets you teleport back to your cultural city, a Bag of Holding which improves inventory space and an Enruned Kosalan Ring that increases the damage output of its wearer. Comment below to let us know about other promotions tied in with this free trial period.

The Lord of the Rings Online's Welcome Back Weekend event starts tomorrow

Filed under: Fantasy, Lord of the Rings Online, Events, in-game, Expansions, News items

With The Lord of the Rings Online's Mines of Moria expansion slated to hit store shelves on November 18th, Turbine is taking extra measures to entice old players to come back with another Welcome Back Weekend. This has been done a couple of times before, so you might know the drill, but in case you don't here goes!

From tomorrow through November 17th, all former subscribers in good standing can play for free, no commitment required. During that period, everyone -- former subscribers and current -- will receive 25% extra experience from monsters, which will stack with rested XP. These are pretty simple incentives, but if they're enough to bring you in, you can download either the standard or high-resolution client and get started tomorrow.

EDIT: We read wrong! While the XP gains push through the 17th, the free play period only lasts through the 10th. Thanks, Bissrok.

Vanguard hopes for a second chance

Filed under: Fantasy, News items, Vanguard

When Vanguard launched, hopes were high that the game would be a breath of fresh air in the MMO market. Unfortunately, the game didn't meet the expectations of many gamers, who lamented its unfinished state and subsequently left. Sony Online Entertainment hasn't given up on Vanguard though, and they're now offering an incentive for players to return.

The offer applies to subscribers whose accounts have been inactive for 60 days or more. The reactivation promotion lasts from September 18 to October 18 and entails creating a new character, which allows you to play through the new Isle of Dawn and check out the game's updated content. That is, until hitting level 10. Thereafter, that character can continue on into Telon, but only by re-subscribing to Vanguard. Players moving up to a paid account are given a pair of Gnomish Rocket Boots as a reward, which impart great bursts of speed.

CCP re-launches Power of 2 EVE promotion, supporting multi-boxing

Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Business models, News items

CCP is renewing its Power of 2 promotion for EVE Online. The promotion encourages multi-boxing by allowing existing subscribers to add a second account at the discounted rate of $49.95 for six months. After the six months expire, the account will switch to the normal $14.95 per month rate. Last time CCP gave players the option to sign the account up for another $49.95 deal after a while. No guarantee it'll do that this time, though.

The promotional e-mail sent out by CCP says that the account can not only be used for training skills on two pilots at once (impossible with two pilots on the same account) but also for "extra firepower on missions" or "an extra hauler for miners." So, legitimized multi-boxing it is, then. Cool. EVE just has to be different in every way it can, doesn't it? It's a compulsion.

The offer's available until October 10th, so you've got a while to mull it over.

How fast can you go from 0 to 60?

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Video, Game mechanics, MMO industry, Leveling, Tips and tricks, News items

How fast can you go from zero to 60? The question sounds like it's right out of a Ferrari brochure, but we assure you, we're talking about World of Warcraft. The most recent promotion Blizzard's come out with, Recruit-a-Friend, allows for a steep increase in experience gains. We said there would be 'hyper-fast leveling' but this is absolutely insane -- our sister site WoW Insider has a video of one of their readers (Brian) leveling a paladin from character creation to level 60 in just 20 minutes.

Brian needed the grantable levels from a recruited account of course, so the real 'work' was done beforehand, but this is still quite a sight. Check out the video below the cut for some ding madness.

KotORO it ain't: There's a third Star Wars MMO out there

Filed under: Sci-fi, News items, Humor

Star Wars Galaxies and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Online (or more likely, Star Wars: The Old Republic) apparently aren't the only two Star Wars MMOs out there. We didn't originally mention this because lacking the Star Wars bit it was under the radar of our normal coverage, but McDonald's is including keys to virtual worlds for kids in its Happy Meals.

Among the worlds: a Sci-Fi environment based on the animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which hits theaters across the United States and the United Kingdom today. The environment is some kind of space station, and be there Yoda will. (You see what we did there?) So if you're really, really desperate to wander around a Star Wars-based virtual world other than SWG, well ... this is your chance, right?

Yeah, okay, it's probably best to wait for KotoRO. We just thought you should know in case you're really hardcore.

EverQuest II seeks more Living Legacies until Sept. 30th

Filed under: Fantasy, EverQuest, EverQuest II, Events, in-game, News items

Apparently happy with results from earlier in the summer, SOE has added a new phase to the Living Legacy program. This time, all inactive EverQuest accounts may now try EverQuest II and all its expansions for free until September 30th. Yes, you read that right: inactive EverQuest accounts, not EverQuest II accounts. Looks like SOE is trying to bring old customers into the 21st century!

Participants also get $5 towards the purchase of this fall's new expansion (assuming they upgrade to a paying account) and a bunch of in-game items including a pet drake, a 12-slot bag, and a bag of XP potions. Word on the street is that the previous iteration of the Living Legacy program was a big success, so SOE is probably trying to keep the ball rolling.

Note, though, that this isn't being offered to current EverQuest subscribers, just lapsed ones. Apparently SOE doesn't want to lose current EQ players to EQ2, but if you're playing neither right now, it wants you to play the more modern one. Makes sense.

NCsoft North America promotes new VP of sales

Filed under: Business models, Events, real-world, MMO industry

NCsoft has recently announced the promotion of Lisa Bell-Cabrera to the position of vice president of sales for the publisher's North American business. Previously serving as national sales manager at NCsoft since 2005, this promotion gives Bell-Cabrera the responsibility of overseeing strategic sales initiatives across multiple sales channels both in North and South America.

Previous to her time spent with NCsoft, she served as vice president of sales at Atari, director of sales at GT Interactive and director of market development at Go Daddy. "This is my dream job," she states. "The online gaming industry is moving at an incredible pace these days and keeping up with how our customers make their purchase decisions requires a willingness to try new things. That's what NCsoft is all about. There couldn't be a better opportunity in this business."

We certainly wish her the very best in her new position!

Commodore Gaming offers EVE Online themed desktop PCs

Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Culture, News items

Commodore Gaming and CCP have teamed up to produce EVE Online themed, gaming-focused desktop computers. There's not much to them; you get a case with some EVE artwork, and you choose between a pre-built system (which features an Intel Core 2 Quad processor and an NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX video card) and a custom system with components you determine.

Official case-mod deals make up a chunk of Commodore's strategy to compete with the big boys of enthusiast gaming PC sales -- like Alienware (now owned by Dell) and VoodooPC (now owned by Hewlett-Packard). Given the prestige of the old Commodore brand, this new iteration has a long way to go.

If you're a really hardcore EVE player in the market for a new computer, going this route couldn't hurt; you can even configure the case to match your faction of choice. Then again, do you really need a 9800 GTX to play EVE Online? Not so much, but it's up to you!

Promotion code grants 20% off ticket price for Connect '08

Filed under: Betas, Sci-fi, Jumpgate Evolution, Events, real-world, New titles

Codemasters' brand new European gaming event Connect 2008 is a little over a month away, and if you've been on the fence about whether to make it out to the Omega Sektor indoor gaming center, LotroLife.com has a deal that might just make your mind up for you. Visit their Connect '08 promotion page, click a magic button, and voila! A promotional code that grants 20% off your ticket purchase is all yours.

Certainly one of the best reasons to attend the convention will be the chance to get your hands on Jumpgate Evolution, with the game being featured on all the computers at the Omega Sektor, and NetDevil will have developers on hand to answer questions -- not to mention, all attendees walk out the door with a JGE beta key. This, on top of all the other games and developers/producers that will be there (which now includes specia guests Jeffrey Steefel of Lord of the Rings Online and Kate Paiz of Dungeons and Dragons Online), leads us to believe that Connect '08 is going to have a stellar debut.
