Tabula Rasa's Operation Immortality extended

Filed under: Sci-fi, Contests, Culture, Events, real-world, Events, in-game, MMO industry, Tabula Rasa

Since we first told you about Tabula Rasa's Operation Immortality, it has grown quite a bit. All sorts of top athletes, artists and musicians have signed onto the project to have their DNA digitized and sent into space through the Immortality Drive. This special hard drive will travel with Richard Garriott to the International Space Station on October 12th and stay there in the event that humanity needs a restart.

Originally, this project was to end on August 31st, for anyone interested in participating. However, we're happy to report that this deadline has now been extended until September 29th, 2008. This gives you even more time to vote on mankind's greatest achievements, send a personal message from the website or win a chance to have your digitized DNA included on the Immortality Drive. So if you still haven't taken part in this historical event, you might want to head on over to the project's website and give it a shot.

One Shots: AFK, researching

Filed under: Sci-fi, Screenshots, Tabula Rasa, One Shots

Many of the Massively staff will be on the road this weekend covering either PAX or Dragon*Con, so we figured this screenshot was appropriate for today's One Shots. What is it, you might ask? Well, from what we're told by Sevenwind, this is what the "AFK" screen looks like in Tabula Rasa. If you're going to be AFK, there are certainly worse things for your character to do beyond researching the situation. (Heck, that could be really handy on boss mobs if your character could research and tell you what to expect as opposed to having to rely on external websites and/or your raid leader!)

Will you be gaming at home this weekend, or heading out to get your geek on? If you'll be doing some gaming, you should grab some screenshots of your favorite game and send them our way! After all, One Shots thrives on your screenshots; otherwise we have to dig into the folders of our staffers. Email those screenshots and descriptions to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com! Safe (in and out of game) travels, all!

Tabula Rasa's Deployment 12 nears the Public Test Server

Filed under: Sci-fi, Events, in-game, Forums, Game mechanics, Patches, Tabula Rasa

With this week's Feedback Friday, the Tabula Rasa folks let us know about their basic plans for the upcoming Deployment 13, which will bring a brand new map, new v2 and v3 weapons and make some highly-requested UI tweaks.

However, the main focus is on what's coming to the Public Test Server very soon with Deployment 12. This is the deployment that will introduce us to the first iteration of the Clan Owned Control Points on a special prototype map for players to use and abuse to their heart's content. Plus, there's word of the Epic Gauntlet Test Map which is aimed towards the level 50 crowd. This map will be a series of 10 rooms, each with a different assortment of Bane creatures. Things get progressively more difficult throughout the map, so it's aimed more towards the hardcore AFS soldiers: no wimps allowed! Check out the entire feedback notes as well as what the community thinks about the upcoming changes.

The DNA guest-list grows for Garriott's Operation Immortality

Filed under: Real life, Sci-fi, Culture, Events, real-world, MMO industry, Tabula Rasa

Richard Garriott's Operation Immortality is proving to be quite the attention-grabber lately. Not only that, but more people are signing up to get in on the DNA-sharing action. One of the most recent additions to this project is Matt Morgan, better known as "Beast" on TV's American Gladiators and a professional wrestler for Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Wrestling.

Morgan has been called "The Blue Print", in reference to his size and physical build. Some believe he is a blue print for the paradigm of human genetics and physical potential. "The Immortality Drive wouldn't be complete without the DNA from a human physical specimen and who better to fit that bill than The Blue Print himself, Matt Morgan," said Garriott. "I'm thrilled that Matt is on board and that an American Gladiator will be making the trip with me to space."

Tabula Rasa Community Olympics event

Filed under: Sci-fi, Contests, Events, in-game, Forums, PvP, Tabula Rasa

Let's face it, the PlanetTR community has remained an integral part of keeping Tabula Rasa what it is today. Sure, there's the gameplay improvements and all the recent work by the devs, but PlanetTR deserves some credit, too. A fine example of this is their new Tabula Rasa Olympics being held this Saturday, August 9th on the Public Test Server.

There will be thirteen events held here in all, including King of the Hill, Gymnastics, Swimming, Fencing and more. Most of these events will employ the use of vendor grey items, and have specific rules regarding class, race and item usage. This, of course, is to even the playing field among characters. Be sure to check out the PlanetTR forums for complete details, rules and sign-up information.

NCsoft Adam and Eve 2.0 art contest announced

Filed under: Sci-fi, Contests, Culture, Fan art, Events, real-world, MMO industry, Tabula Rasa

Are you an exceptional artist, with work good enough to save humanity from the Bane? You might just be what Richard Garriott and Operation Immortality are looking for. Just consider this: if the Earth was destroyed by tentacled aliens and the human race was forced to be reborn from stored DNA, what would the new Adam and Eve look like?

This is where you come in. The new Adam and Eve 2.0 Art Contest held by NCsoft allows players to submit their own original artwork for a chance to win a spot on the Immortality Drive. Winners will get their DNA and artwork sent into space with Richard Garriott and stored on the International Space Station as part of mankind's greatest achievements. The selection will also have the opportunity to appear on future NCsoft promotional materials. So head on over to the main contest page for complete details, and good luck!

Tabula Rasa's Feedback Friday gives backstory on General British

Filed under: Sci-fi, Events, real-world, Events, in-game, Game mechanics, Lore, Tabula Rasa, Roleplaying

In this week's Feedback Friday for Tabula Rasa, we get a bit of a summary from the release of Deployment 11 earlier this week. Richard Garriott's space flight and his new project Operation Immortality is featured, with an explanation of how this experiment will work. Plus, we're treated to an in-character story entitled The Traveler, which is all about General British's experiences as a cosmonaut castaway and eventual hero for the AFS.

We also get an explanation of the changes made to the new player experience, and why these changes were necessary. Apparently, the developers felt that Bootcamp and subsequent missions were too difficult and were laden with too much extraneous information, so they've revamped the tutorial, help menus and log-in screen. Hopefully these changes will aid new players brought in with the recent publicity from Operation Immortality, as well as the current influx of returning players.

NCsoft's Operation Immortality launches

Filed under: Real life, Sci-fi, Events, real-world, MMO industry, Tabula Rasa

As we reported from Comic-Con 08, NCsoft was quite the belle of the ball last week with their Adam & Eve 2.0 booth gaining its fair share of attention from attendees. At this booth, couples were seen swabbing their cheeks for some DNA samples to send into space with one of the grandfathers of the MMO, Richard Garriott.

Finally, the website for this campaign has been officially launched and all further details have been released. From now until August 31st, anyone with a PC and an internet connection (that's you) can participate in the site's weekly polls which will be included on an Immortality Drive, to be sent into space with Garriott. Not only that, but current Tabula Rasa players can actually leave a personal message to be included on this drive. Is this simply an outrageous commercial for Tabula Rasa? Sure it is, but has anyone ever done anything even close to this before for a game? Nope.

Richard Garriott and special guest join TR's Friday Night Fights

Filed under: Sci-fi, Video, Contests, Events, in-game, Forums, Game mechanics, PvP, News items, Tabula Rasa

In the past, we've reported on some excited bouts in Tabula Rasa's Friday Night Fights, but nothing compares to what they have in store for you now. Next Friday, July 25th, Richard Garriott will be facing up against two time featherweight boxing champ Jesus Chavez in the C.E.L.L.A.R. Arena. This will be held on the TR Test Server starting at 6pm Central time. They will be in C.E.L.L.A.R. 3, which can be accessed via teleporter from the barracks in Alia Das.

If you're new to Friday Night Fights and aren't sure how it all works, TR's Community Coordinator Amy "Critters" Crider has assembled a handy Q&A which you can see right after the cut, as well as a hilarious promotional video created especially for this event. We hope to see you there!

Tabula Rasa's Friday Night Fights gets an upgrade

Filed under: Sci-fi, Contests, Events, in-game, Forums, PvP, Tabula Rasa

In this week's Weekend Wrapup for Tabula Rasa, we get a few tidbits from within the community at large. Friday Nights Fights is still going strong, with this weekend's winner being Glass on his fifth FnF championship! Plus, the FnF ringleaders have announced some changes to the regular matches to help liven things up a bit. A new match type called the Gut Check pits the final winner against 6 of the previously-defeated competitors, who form a squad to take down the final contestant one at a time. This week, Glass made it through two fighters before finally being taken down by the third.

Also, be sure to check out a new video compiled by Kaczmanchoy which showcases all of the weapons in Tabula Rasa. However, the video goodness doesn't stop there as Chae compiled some footage of his lottery event from last Friday.

Massively Exclusive: Tabula Rasa's AFS War College

Filed under: Sci-fi, Galleries, Events, real-world, Tabula Rasa, Massively Event Coverage

Last week we got a chance to visit NCsoft's Austin offices to attend the first ever AFS War College, where some of Tabula Rasa's finest soldiers were invited to join NCsoft's developers for a day of discussions, questions, and demos. We took a tour of the facilities guided by Richard Garriott himself, and we invite you to join us as we learn all about the design of Logos, hear all the details on how Tabula Rasa is developed, and see the TR developers' top priorities. Have we piqued your interest yet? Click along with us and see what came of this year's War College!

An interview with TR's Lead Designer Tom Potter

Filed under: Sci-fi, Business models, Game mechanics, Interviews, MMO industry, Tabula Rasa

Recently, WarCry had the chance to sit down with Tabula Rasa's Lead Designer, Tom Potter regarding the state of the game as we see it today. He discusses how successful some of the game's features have been and what they plan for the future of the game. He also touches on Richard Garriott's space flight plans and how involved he still is in the ongoing development of the game. We can't help but wonder what type of inspiration his space flight will evoke.

One of the most interesting pieces of this Q&A is the admission that the game's developers consider themselves more prepared now than they did at launch. While this is perfectly normal for new online games that depend so heavily on the community aspect for its success, it's still interesting to note that Destination Games, being so new to the development world, have finally licked their wounds and are ready to move forward full charge! This includes plans to offer incentives for existing players to stay, and more free trial periods to entice new players to come see what the game is really all about.

Anti-Aliased: I wear funny hats and I'm proud of it

Filed under: Culture, Opinion, Roleplaying, Anti-Aliased

Since when did role-playing become a dirty word? Apparently even mentioning the initials of the dreaded "RP" is enough to make people want to prove John Gabriel's Greater Internet Dickwad Theory as loudly as possible. Players go out of their way to make others feel uncomfortable and to ruin any sort of fun some people may have. Is it because it's the internet? Or have we forgotten the history of the role-playing game?

Because I can't exactly spend a whole column talking about the horrors of the internet (NSFW) I'm going to be focusing on the place of role-playing and how it got interjected into these online games of ours.

How not to review Tabula Rasa

Filed under: Culture, Reviews, Opinion, Tabula Rasa, Humor

PC Advisor UK recently ran a "expert review" of Tabula Rasa, giving you a wonderful look at the game... up until level 10. Then apparently the reviewer didn't want to play anymore and started to make things up.

Tabula Rasa Vault picked this gem of a review up and actually reviewed the review, and I'm quite inclined to agree with them. Last I checked, Foreas isn't an island, Twin Pillars and Foreas Base are nice places to hang out, you don't waste so much ammo when you crouch and have a higher accuracy, and it's really easy to avoid enemy controlled bases by just switching battlefield instances.

Reviewing an MMO is tough - especially when you may not have alot of time to put into it. This review is, sadly, proof of what happens when you don't spend some time with the game beyond an early level. This reviewer never got to see the interesting facets of Tabula Rasa, like the community sponsored fist fights, the in-game events, and the other cities and planets.

If the reviewer had played past level 10, he might have started to like Tabula Rasa. This is a great reason to make sure your reviewer checked his facts before posting his review. Otherwise, you might just be believing an illusion.

6 month veteran rewards unveiled for Tabula Rasa

Filed under: Sci-fi, Events, in-game, Tabula Rasa

The Tabula Rasa weekend wrap-up offers the usual community news and Friday Night Fights review. But this was a special weekend for the men and women of the AFS: it's been just about six months since the game launched. (Hey, that means Massively is about half a year old too.) A new monthly milestone for an NCsoft game can mean only one thing: new veteran rewards! The six-month vet rewards are ladled atop the three-month Kirin mask, and the hilarious 1-month /jumpforjoy emote.

These newest rewards are downright goofy. Dedicated players will be getting access to three dance emotes (YMCA, breakdancing, and ballet), as well as a handful of costume props. These props include a green beret, a pair of brass Knuckles and (no, we're not kidding) a General British mask. Those Destination Games folks sure love their fictional military leader.
