Into the depths of the Akheva Ruins

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, EverQuest, Lore

Laugh while you can, Luclin. In five hundred years, you and your whole frickin' moon get blowed up. All the Akhevans who worship you, all those bubble-headed Centi alien creatures, all those weird red-skinned cavemen, those mana-sucking mind worms, it all goes kablooey. But you know all about that, don't you? Because when that world-enveloping storm, the Maiden's Scar, swept through this old Akhevan city of Ka Vethan, and left behind the Akheva Ruins we know today, and all your four-armed, sexless minions ran off in terror to Vex Thal, you just stopped caring. Let it all blow up, you screamed in your dark joy. Let them all die.

The Akheva Ruins, that old stronghold of the Akheva made of crystallized shadow, a once-living shrine to their mistress and creator, the Dark Maiden Luclin, is in shambles. Though seen today mainly as the level 50 to 55 hot zone, it's still a place of dark mystery and lore, explored in EQPlayer's latest entry in its "Into the Depths" series exploring the lore behind EverQuest zones. One thing they don't mention? How great Centi Toes taste in stew!

One Shots: Fireworks over the Bay

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Screenshots, One Shots

Today's One Shots is actually one from this blogger's personal archives. This Troll Rogue is enjoying the holiday fireworks in Booty Bay from World of Warcraft, taken before Burning Crusade was released. American MMOG-industry companies are off for the holiday weekend, and we are running on a skeleton crew as well. However, those of us still lurking around the offices are keeping an eye out for news for you.

In the meantime, we hope those of you stateside have a great (and safe) holiday with friends and family. To the rest of you out there, don't worry - we'll be back up to speed once we've had a chance to sleep off all the partying!

And hey, if you have the chance to snap some screenshots while enjoying in-game holiday events this weekend, send them in to us at oneshots AT massively.com! We'd love to see what you're up to.

One Shots: Not a warm summer screen

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Guild Wars, One Shots

As many of us enjoy very warm weather for the upcoming holiday weekend, we thought we'd flash back to a cold holiday of yesteryear. Today's Guild Wars One Shots screen comes to us from Eugaet, who created this during the 2005 Guild Wars holiday event. Eugaet writes: I had planned on creating panoramas for every location in the game, including 'holiday' versions...but I ended up not having much time to devote to the project. Even so, they're still lovely panoramas to look at -- especially the full-size version!

If you're heading out in your favorite virtual lands to enjoy the celebrations, snap some screenshots of what you and your friends are doing. We'd love to show off some of the things going on this weekend, but we need your help! So snag those screenshots and send them to us at oneshots AT massively.com along with a quick blurb as to what we're seeing.

DC Universe Online wants to add you as a friend

Filed under: Super-hero, DC Universe Online

Stop the presses! Those of you just itching for information about DC Universe Online can now check out its profile on MySpace. That's right, well before there's an official webpage, you can get access to screenshots, wallpapers, icons, and concept art. There's also a dev blog, with interviews and video diaries to come.

What's even more exciting for fans is the chance to attend the DCUO party at this year's ComicCon by making the profile your top friend, and printing the page out to show DC as proof. The party will be held July 25th at the Sweetwater Saloon in San Diego. Wow, who knew the Internet was such a great connective service?

World of Warcraft
One Shots: A bit of bearded fashion

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Lord of the Rings Online, One Shots

It's not everyday that we get to see a screenshot of a fellowship in their finery -- or of a MMORPG drag show, but this one fits the bill nicely. Today's Lord of the Rings Online One Shot was sent in to us by Perthir, who had this to say about the above screen:

Defenders of the White Tree on Eldar had another kin social night recently. Our favourite social organiser Mirlina put another cracker together, "The Bearded Ladies Fashion Parade." As you can see from the attached pic the 'gentlemen' defenders let loose their inner feminine side and donned their favourite dresses! It's worthwhile noting that Milnestar won the event. (It's becoming a habit as he won our pirate night competition as well!)

Following the revelry around Bree, the Defenders headed to the Ettenmoors for a bit of PvMP in dresses. Much hilarity ensued as we imagined what the creep side were thinking. (Probably hey - easy renown here - they're all in dresses.)

We love to see these types of events that players dream up! If you've been to a player-run event recently, why not gather up some screenshots of it and send it to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with a quick blurb as to what we're seeing. Bonus points for anything involving bearded guys in festive dresses!

One Shots: Crom's Rock

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Age of Conan, One Shots

Despite many people saying that Age of Conan is still very rough in places, one of the things that many people have been thrilled with has been the graphics. Today's lovely One Shots image from our reader Watumez shows off one really lovingly detailed area in Age of Conan. He writes: This is at a place called Crom's rock; a truly impressive place. This is Sarman the Guardian (on the Ymir EU server).

Do you have a lovely landscape you snapped while out and about in your favorite MMOG? If so, you should send that screenshot to us, rather than letting it collect virtual dust where only you can appreciate it! it's easy. Just send it to oneshots AT massively DOT com with a little bit of information on what we're seeing in the shot, and relax. We do the rest!

One Shots: A beautiful snowy night

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Screenshots, One Shots

With all the exciting news coming out of Blizzard's Worldwide Invitational this year, many people are turning their eyes back to World of Warcraft to see what changes are coming. Today we have a lovely One Shot from Brumbleby the Dwarven Warrior, who decided to send this snowy shot along, evoking the icy feel of so many of the Wrath of the Lich King promotional materials we've seen to date. He sets up the scene for us: "After examining his prey to see if it had anything of use on its person, Brumbleby looked around and noticed that, amidst all of the carnage, bloodshed and loss, the world of Azeroth still was beautiful."

Are you once again (or perhaps for the first time) turning your eyes to the Azerothian skies? If you've snapped a lovely screenshot from your favorite game (no matter the MMO) we'd love to see it! Send it in to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your quick description of what we're seeing in the screenshot. Yours could be next!

New screens from the art-house MMO called Love

MMOs don't have to all be about orcs, elves, and level-grinding. Case in point: Eskil Steenberg's Love, an art-house MMO that defies every conceivable expectation of what the genre is about. There's been a lot of talk lately about how there isn't enough innovation anymore. Quiet down, folks; Love is what you seek.

When Steenberg showed the game to us at GDC this year, we were excited and alarmed at the same time -- excited because it was different and gorgeous, alarmed because we had to step outside of our comfort zone. The exploration-driven gameplay allows users to alter the painting-like world to match their dreams, but the world is all they'll be changing, as the game features no character creation or customization. Users don't even to pick their own names.

So yes, it's challenging, but God, we miss being challenged. If only there were more projects like this for us to write about. For now, though, let's just swoon over Love. Steenberg released three new images from the game on his blog yesterday, and we have them here so you can soak in the impressionistic atmosphere. Be sure to check out our GDC gallery as well.

One Shots: The sky is on fire

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Guild Wars, One Shots

Today we bring you the follow-up panorama to the last one that we got from eugaet. Today's Guild Wars One Shots is from a few years ago according to eugaet, who said that the above shows off a view of post-sear Ascalon City in Guild Wars. While we can't show it full-size in the column, we can offer it for anyone who wants to see this image in all its glory -- be sure to check out the full-sized panorama!

Do you have any interesting screenshots from quite some time ago that show what your favorite game used to look like? Have there been lots of graphical changes since then? If so, we'd love to see what they look like. Just send those to us here at oneshots AT massively.com. We're looking for lots of screenshots from any MMOG out there, so don't be shy!

World of Warcraft
One Shots: One mead too many

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Lord of the Rings Online, One Shots

Woohoo! It's the weekend! Time for rest and relaxation, unless of course, you're one of the insane masses who was up at oh-dark-thirty this morning waiting on a certain bit of news to come down the wire. But now that that's done, it's time to get our MMOG party on! Today we find our One Shots regular, Finudir, who has apparently been doing a fair bit of tavern hopping in Lord of the Rings Online....

After a recent bout of revelry, Finudir of Gondor became exasperated at the never-ending stream of baddies slipping into Nan Amlug from Angmar. Walking dangerously close to a precipice, especially after having consumed one too many Blue Bocks, Finudir threw up his arms and directed a well-versed rant at the world below. "Why can't we all just get along!!!!" could be heard for miles in the valley.

All we can say is that we hope he slept that crazy idea off somewhere. After all, who would give us loot if we made nice-nice with the monsters! Do you have any screens of your own in-game revelry (or the resultant messed up aftereffects) that you'd like to show off? If so, pack them up (with a quick blurb for each) into an email, and send it to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com! The more screenshots, the better!

A screenshot and video tour of Silkroad Online

Filed under: At a glance, Fantasy, Silkroad Online, Free-to-play, Massively Hands-on

Earlier this month we had the chance to take a tour of the free-to-play Joymax title Silkroad Online. A unique fantasy game, this microtransaction-supported offering transports players back to the time of high adventure along the trade routes between Europae and China. The game offers players the option to play either as a Chinese character, with a mix of magic and might, or a European character with a more traditional MMO role. Alongside the usual leveling and killing of monsters, the game features a one-of-a-kind trade run system, that pits players against each other in groups and against NPC brigands in a nuanced blending of PvP and PvE.

Today we have for you a screenshot and video-heavy tour of the game, offering insights into what it's like to try out this singular title. For our video offerings click on through below the cut to see combat in action, character creation, and a taste of what the trade run experience is like. For more information on the game, and to see far more of the unique character customization elements like the lady on the tiger above, click through to our extensive exploratory gallery. Either way, stay for a second and investigate the blending of East meets West that is Silkroad Online.

One Shots: A statue staredown

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Age of Conan, One Shots

Wait, what is it that we have here today? A landscape? No, it's not Lord of the Rings Online. It's showing off a lovely, grassy (and un-glitched) area in Age of Conan! Today's One Shots comes to us from David L. who was thrilled to see we used his last submission, so he sent us another one to celebrate. (See? We do use them!) Dave writes:

I was inspired, so here is a view in Field of the Dead from the Stream Bridge re-spawn point. These two hulking statures staring at each other is probably the best signature piece in that zone (that I've seen so far). In the evening/night the fire flickers quite nicely off them as well, but that screenshot doesn't look as good!

Dave is living proof that we love lots of One Shots submissions and will indeed run them! All you have to do is snag something you think looks cool, has a story, is funny, or whatever your reasoning is, toss it in a mail, write up a blurb and send it to us at oneshots AT massively.com. Yours could be next!

One Shots: Pre-sear Panorama

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Guild Wars, One Shots

While this looks like a very teeny tiny screenshot, we assure you it isn't! This is one of another series of lovely panoramic screenshots that was sent in, this time by Eugaet. This one comes from pre-sear Ascalon City in Guild Wars, standing lovely as we remember it. Eugaget sent some others that we'll be showing in the upcoming days, but for now, enjoy a flashback to simpler times when the land was lush and lovely and the sky was blue!

Do you have a lovely panoramic you've created out of game screenshots? If so, we'd love to see it! Just send it to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com. Yours could be next!

New batch of LotRO calendar wallpapers sneaks peak at Book 14

Filed under: Fantasy, Lord of the Rings Online, Wallpapers

For some time now, Turbine has been releasing very pleasing wallpaper calendars based on The Lord of the Rings Online. The wallpapers feature well-framed screenshots from the game, accompanied by three small calendar pages -- one for each month in the quarter.

The last batch will soon expire, as its wallpapers only track up through the end of June. Fear not, though; the Q3 2008 calendars are here! There are three different versions -- one of which depicts the Ring-forge of Eriagon, an area that will go into the game in Book 14.

One Shots: It's good to have friends

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Lord of the Rings Online, One Shots

Today we bring you a scene of surprise and daring from one of our regular Lord of the Rings Online contributors, Captain Finudir of Gondor. We're just glad to hear that he and Alamast came out alright! He writes: Finudir of Gondor's been trekking through the North Downs recently. During one of his recent walks through the forest of Taur Gondwaith, he accidentally stumbled upon a grumpy Rock-Troll. Good thing Finudir never solos without his trusty herald, Alamast, or it might have been Good Night and Good Luck for our well-travelled adventurer. As it turned out, the Rock-Troll met an early death. Huzzah!

Do you have any screenshots of you and your friends out adventuring in the world? Perhaps you've met an unbelievably nasty beast in your travels that others really should see. Whatever your reason (and your game) send those screenshots to us here at oneshots AT massively.com! We love to hear your stories.
