Massively Meta:

We've been working on improving all of our Second Life coverage, and from today you'll find more of that in its own section, rather than on the front page where it gets tangled up with the games. You'll still find bigger and broader interest pieces on the front page, but it's clear from the feedback we've been getting that more coverage is wanted, and that it deserves a dedicated section.

Over the next few weeks, we'll also be looking at bringing back some of the more popular features and series -- so if you aren't already tracking the Second Life section or RSS feed, now is the time to add it to your reading list for more great Second Life coverage.

Yesterday in Second Life there was:
  • 13,773 new signups bringing the total to 12,586,944 signups.
  • A peak concurrency of 64,305 at 1:40PM (a new record!), and a minimum concurrency of 34,585 at 11:55PM. Median concurrency for the day was 46,889.
  • The Grid Stability Index for the day was 2.07 (lower is better).
  • More network glitches and simulator login problems through the day.

Yesterday in Second Life there was:
  • 14,791 new signups bringing the total to 12,485,596 signups.
  • A peak concurrency of 63,409 at 1:40PM (and a new record!), and a minimum concurrency of 35,039 at 11:55PM. Median concurrency for the day was 47,812.
  • The Grid Stability Index for the day was 1.12 (lower is better).
  • There was a bump at about 9:30AM which caused widespread problems with HTTP, emails and networked vendors - though it didn't last very long.
  • This weekend there was a media demonstration of the (now-patched) Quicktime vulnerability. Press coverage of the demonstration didn't cover any important information, but seems to indicate that it was the original flaw that was demonstrated using a viewer without protections that were subsequently put into place.

Yesterday in Second Life there was:
  • 17,884 new signups bringing the total to 12,383,841 signups.
  • A peak concurrency of 63,195 at 1:35PM (a new record!), and a minimum concurrency of 34,646 at 11:50PM. Median concurrency for the day was 47,413.
  • The Grid Stability Index for the day was 1.73 (lower is better).
  • A database log failure caused widespread login failures, more than once. It may also have been responsible for assorted teleportation failures around the same time. Indications seem to be that concurrency would have peaked slightly higher if it were not for the sudden failure.

Yesterday in Second Life there was:
  • 15,491 new signups bringing the total to 12,154,946 signups.
  • A peak concurrency of 62,263 at 1:50PM (a new record!), and a minimum concurrency of 33,704 at 11:50PM. Median concurrency for the day was 47,035 (the record median concurrency was 47,950 on 5 January 2008)
  • The Grid Stability Index for the day was 1.30 (lower is better).
  • Grid concurrency, it appears, could have gone higher but didn't due to load-balancing problems on Linden Lab webservers that impacted a number of things including the support portal and some logins. While these issues are marked as resolved, we still have isolated reports of trouble with them.
  • Word came down the pipe that rock band Journey would be opening a sim in just a few days.

Yesterday in Second Life there was:
  • 19,793 new signups bringing the total to 12,030,055 signups.
  • A peak concurrency of 61,927 (a new record!) at 1:55PM, and a minimum concurrency of 34,337 at 1:10AM. Median concurrency for the day was 46,128.
  • The Grid Stability Index for the day was 0.95 (lower is better).
  • Reports of problems and difficulties were nearly absent today, unusually, despite the high concurrency.
  • Linden Lab had phone troubles again. Since the issue isn't marked as resolved, we assume that it is still ongoing. Curiously, at 11:46, an update said "While this issue is being worked on, your calls will connect." which we can only interpret as "While it is being fixed, it will behave as if it is already fixed." - but perhaps that is supposed to mean something else. We're just not sure.

The end of one day and the beginning of anotherYesterday in Second Life there was:
  • 17,589 new signups bringing the total to 11,917,945 signups.
  • A peak concurrency of 61,560 (a new record!) at 1:45PM, and a minimum concurrency of 34,399 at 11:55PM. Median concurrency for the day was 46,627.
  • The Grid Stability Index for the day was 1.31 (lower is better).
  • Things ran very smoothly today up until 1:45PM (the record peak) at which point users began reporting sour behaviour on the grid. Concurrency began to fall sooner than expected as users began having difficulty logging in - logins remained problematic, according to reports for the next several hours.
  • The peak was 2,822 above the previous best (Sunday 6 January). For comparison purposes, Everquest's record concurrency is reported to have been approximately 90,000 which puts Linden Lab's virtual world more than two thirds of the way there in terms of usage.

The end of one day and the beginning of anotherYesterday in Second Life there was:
  • 16,906 new signups bringing the total to 11,805,675 signups.
  • A peak concurrency of 58,738 (a new record!) at 1:40PM, and a minimum concurrency of 26 at 7:25AM (due to the abrupt morning shutdown). Median concurrency for the day was 41,815.
  • The Grid Stability Index for the day was 22.46 (lower is better).
  • Despite a terrible day for stability with two significant outages, the grid had a record day for concurrency, peaking at 58,738 - a record two days in a row. It does not appear that the stability problems are directly related to the load.
  • Group dividends haven't apparently been working properly for the last day or two (again) - these are now reported as fixed (at least until next time).

The end of one day and the beginning of anotherYesterday in Second Life there was:
  • 16,588 new signups bringing the total to 11,788,769 signups.
  • A peak concurrency of 58,363 (a new record!) at 3:00PM, and a minimum concurrency of 33,299 at 2:05AM. Median concurrency for the day was 47,950.
  • The Grid Stability Index for the day was 1.44 (lower is better).
  • Concurrency was at a record high, though it didn't beat the previous record by very much. Quite unusual for a Saturday. If the grid holds stable, Sunday should be another record peak.
  • Median signup rates are relatively stable at just over 700 per hour, and the twelve millionth signup should be due around the 18th of January, unless there are significant changes.
