Champions of the Force, exposed

Filed under: Sci-fi, Previews, Star Wars Galaxies, Trading card games

Champions of the Force, the online-only collectible trading card game for Star Wars Galaxies got a public airing at Comic-Con just recently, where LucasArts took the time to show off this tight and well-polished game. And polished it is. Legends of Norrath might have been a fair crowd-pleaser, but it had its share of flaws, and SOE-Denver have taken time to tune things up and streamline the play. Plus, it's Star Wars -- come on. You know you want it.

Search your feelings, you know it to be true.

You will be able to get your groove on, either via the SWG client or through a special standalone client, against other players or against an NPC opponent. Four classic Star Wars archetypes are available for play: Rebel and Jedi, and (of course) those bad boys, the Imperials and Sith. Aside from the basic one-on-one matches, there's word of at least one storyline game (and perhaps more later) set somewhere between Star Wars epsiodes four and five.

E308: A first look at Champions of the Force

We admit: we're addicts. Addicted to the drug that is collectible trading card games. So when SOE recently announced their latest online trading card game, Champions of the Force, we knew we were destined to be consumed by it. (Not to mention the in-game loot to be acquired. Who out there doesn't want their own household Jawa vendor?) Massively sat down with SOE Senior Game Designer Joe Alread at E3 to talk Champions.

Where did the idea for a TCG based on Star Wars Galaxies come from?
Joe Alread: People were really enjoying Legends of Norrath, really enjoying the game and the unique story that came from it. This gave us some incintive to branch out with Star Wars Galaxies. Champions of the Force is going to have its own unique story-line and raids, much like Legends of Norrath.

Exclusive first look at Star Wars Galaxies TCG loot cards

Filed under: Sci-fi, Previews, Star Wars Galaxies, Free-to-play, Trading card games

Here at Massively, you may have noticed we love trading card games set inside MMOs almost as much as we love MMOs themselves. That's why we're really happy to bring you the first in a series of sneak peaks, looking ahead to the release of the Star Wars Galaxies Online TCG: Champions of the Force. Today we've got two loot cards, the special items that unlock in-game fripperies for your enjoyment. They're both items you can use in your character's house; we expect you'll see a lot of housing loot items, as the game's housing system is one of the most robust of any MMO we've played.

The first (pictured right) unlocks the ability to drop a vendor in your house that looks like a Jawa. What might these scavengers of the desert be hawking from your front room? Easy to find out once you've obtained one of these brown-robed miscreants. The other is a simple statue, a bust of the dread Sith lord Count Dooku. The feature text for the bust reads, "A bust of Count Dooku like the one found in the Jedi library. Once a respected member of the Jedi Council, Count Dooku embraced the dark side of the Force and fell from grace. Many remnants of his celebrated years remain and like this bust, can be displayed in your house. "

Check back soon for more Champions of the Force goodness.

Star Wars Galaxies' producer adds additional details to TCG announcement

Filed under: Sci-fi, New titles, Star Wars Galaxies, Trading card games

Yesterday's announcement of an online Trading Card Game based on the SOE title Star Wars Galaxies came as quite a surprise. Fans were full of questions in the official forum thread announcing the game, and Galaxies' newly-minted Senior Producer Dotanuki was on-hand part of the evening to clarify information for players.

Just to reiterate a bit, Champions of the Force will offer some 20 loot cards redeemable in-game, with the possibility of new cards being found via in-game adventuring. Players will be able to choose a light- or dark-side slant to their decks, and the game will feature events similar to sister title Legends of Norrath's raids called heroic encounters. Adds the producer:
  • Loot cards are only going to be available in booster packs, not through direct sales.
  • Pricing on the cards has still not been determined.
  • The game is being developed by the SOE-Denver studio; the Austin team has not been sidetracked or taken off of SWG proper products to work on the game.
  • There will be an in-game client and a standalone client for the game, just as Legends of Norrath currently offers.
  • Booster packs for the game will be only lootable from NPCs in-game during special promotional periods, a departure from the LoN paradigm.
  • All SWG subscribers will be granted cards for free, and there is no subscription fee required to play the game. Subscribers will received five free booster packs a month.

Interview with Chuck Kallenbach, Game Designer on Legends of Norrath

Filed under: Fantasy, EverQuest, EverQuest II, Free-to-play, Trading card games

What's this gab we're hearing about Legends of Norrath, it isn't all about the loot cards? Heresy! We're still buying up those virtual packs in hopes to score a rare loot card. Nevertheless, over on IGN's EQ2 Vault we came across this interview with Chuck Kallenbach, Game Designer on Legends of Norrath. Much is discussed gameplay wise about the insight behind the new Monk class, one that doesn't use weapons. One other topic covered includes the conundrum on scaling the game's complexity with new gameplay mechanics with the importance to not veer away from the game's intuitiveness and accessibility.

The Oathbreaker set is the latest expansion introduced last week from Sony Online Entertainment. It brings 250 new cards, fresh gameplay mechanics, a new challenging raid scenario, and the following classes: Monk, Coercer, Templar and Beastlord. Many classes from EverQuest and EverQuest II are now represented in the game. If you are interested learning how to play Legends of Norrath but don't want to dump a bunch of cash you can download the client and play through the tutorials and it won't cost a you a dime.

Sony Online Entertainment sent over word that art selections from their online trading card game Legends of Norrath have been selected to appear in a unique publication. The EXPOSÉ series of art books is well-known for highlighting some of the best commercial and digital art created in the past year. EXPOSÉ 6 is heading to store shelves soon, and some of the work SOE artists have done on the TCG passed muster in front of a panel of professional artists.

Pieces selected for the book include the gnarly looking Gnoll Shaman (above), as well as a depiction of EverQuest lore giant Mayong Mistmoore.Check out the gallery of included art pieces below, or read below the cut for the full press release.

Massively hands-on: Wizard101

Filed under: Fantasy, Galleries, Screenshots, Video, New titles, Previews, Hands-on, Kids, Wizard101

KingsIsle Entertainment was founded way back in 2005 -- and since their inception, they seem to have stayed quietly sequestered in their offices, hard at work on unknown projects. With a team consisting of industry veterans from Wolfpack (creators of Shadowbane) and Ion Storm, it was hard not to be curious about their work. If you're one of the many who have been wondering what the team has been working on, you're in luck, because they've just announced their first project: Wizard101.

We recently had a chance to visit KingsIsle's Austin studios (they've taken up residence in a corner of the complex formerly inhabited by Origin Systems) and enroll in the Ravenwood School for the Magical Arts for a day to get a feel for the game. Though this game is aimed at kids ("tweens" that are too old for the likes of Club Penguin but too young for their parents to feel comfortable letting them loose in Barrens chat), its turn-based combat system and trading card game elements may interest you, too. So what makes Wizard101 different from the proliferation of MMOs on the market? A few elements of the game caught our eye...

Electronic Arts enters the card-based MMO arena with BattleForge

Filed under: At a glance, Fantasy, Business models, Game mechanics, New titles, News items, Trading card games

With games like Magic Online and Freaky Creatures in the gaming consciousness, this variant on the concept of microtransactions is on the rise. Electronic Arts must think so too, because they've just announced their card-based MMO offering, called BattleForge.

BattleForge will be an entirely Web-based card-game, where you'll build your fantasy army by the purchase of online decks, or trading them with other players, or even winning them in tournaments. Gameplay itself will feature the use of four elements and a mystical forge to do battle. Being developed by EA Phenomic, Germany-based creators of the SpellForce series, this upcoming MMO is expected to launch in the Fall of this year.

Penny Arcade's WoW CCG contest ends, hilariously

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Contests, Culture, Trading card games

Early this month we discussed a contest, announced by the creators of Penny Arcade and aimed squarely at the hearts of card-and-mmo-players everywhere. It seemed so simple: craft a ten-word story about World of Warcraft and win yourself a huge pile of trading card game loot. The devil is, as is so often the case, in the details. With many hundreds of entrants the competition was quite fierce, and today's unveiling of the top five entries proves out just how fierce.

Like you, a lot of bloggers from the site submitted stories, but we know when we're beaten. How can you top "Overlord Saurfang is only afraid of one thing... Mrs. Saurfang?" Or "Naked they run, level 1 banks: Clark Kents of Azeroth?" I espcially like winner #3's tale: "The gunshot echoed like a ghost with nobody to haunt." Many of the honorable mentions are great too, like "'Small trogg problem in Orgrimmar's basement.' What an understatement, Thrall", or "Tipping his sombrero in salute, he dismounted his mechanical chicken."

We're curious, though: did you enter? If you'd be willing, why don't you share your submission(s) with us in the comments? This blogger volunteers to go first: "The murlocs, their scales glinting, advanced with hungry mouths wide."

Gallery Nucleus' Art of Blizzard show

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Galleries, Culture, Events, real-world, Crafting, News items, Trading card games

Penny Arcade made mention of this in a recent news post: Gallery Nucleus in the town of Alhambra, California, will host a showing of artwork from the talented artists of Blizzard, this Saturday, March 8th, from 7 to 11 PM. It's not known exactly how many pieces of concept artwork will be shown, but it gets better: each piece shown is purchasable, with the evening's proceeds to benefit Child's Play, the wonderful organization we posted about before. You'll also get a chance to speak with the devs and artists of Blizzard and maybe get a little insight into how they work their magic.

But wait, there's more! The evening will also see live demos of the World of Warcraft trading card game at Nucleus' new gallery space one block over. You can read the event information on this downloadable PDF. Gorgeous galleries, fascinating conversation, and absorbing gameplay -- what more could you ask for? That's easy: someone make this a traveling show!

Legends of Norrath TCG Thanksgiving Tournament Marathon Weekend

Filed under: Fantasy, EverQuest II, Events, in-game, Trading card games

Die hard fans of Legends of Norrath -- EQ2's in-game trading card game -- get your decks ready. From the EQ2 Players site, there will be a Thanksgiving Tournament Marathon Weekend running from 5pm PST November 21st, until 12am PST November 26th. Any tournaments you enter during this period will net you points, even if you lose (3 points for a win and 1 for a loss), and the top two scorers at the conclusion of the marathon will be able to choose any loot card -- a card which will grant an in-game Everquest II item -- as their prize. Keep in mind that this is points-based, and while winning more will get you more points, it doesn't mean you'll need to maintain a 100% record to take out the final prize.

While this sounds skewed for the hardcore, there are prizes and incentives simply for participating as well. As long as you enter one tournament during the marathon's duration, you will receive an Oathbreaker booster pack of cards, and every tournament will have better prizes than usual up for grabs. So even if you know you won't be sitting in the top position, it is worthwhile if you enjoy the game to get your free booster pack and be in the running for some beefed up tournament rewards.

There have been quite a few feature tournaments and promotions from the LoN team as of late, and it certainly seems like a good time to be involved.

Legends of Norrath expansion announced

Filed under: Fantasy, EverQuest, EverQuest II, MagiKnights, Expansions, New titles, Trading card games, Races

The Legends of Norrath trading card game was only released a few months ago, but already Sony Online Entertainment is planning for the future. This past week they announced the first expansion to the title, Forsworn. Combined with Oathbound, the current card set, Forsworn will open up a series of new options for the player.

Set highlights include:
  • 2 on 2 multiplayer - small scale team combat to change up the game types.
  • New Avatar Races - The high elves and the Iksar will join the game, opening up new Light and Shadow options.
  • Raids - Groups of players, each with their own deck, can team up to take on AI opponents of great power. Players who complete enough of the single-player content can actually run these raid decks against their fellow players.
  • New Loot Cards - Up to twenty new cards representing in-game items will be released with this set.
  • New single-player scenarios, pitting your avatar against the forces that oppose the Seventh Hammer and the Tribunal. The single-player elements will introduce new game concepts, like the Overwhelm, Sentinel, and Reinforce key words.
There's no word yet on when the set will be released, and more features are promised in the future.

Legends of Norrath booster drops increased in promo this weekend

Filed under: Fantasy, EverQuest, EverQuest II, Events, in-game, Trading card games

If you're a fan of Sony Online Entertainment's Legends of Norrath card game, you're set to have a good time this week. This coming Friday to Sunday is a promo weekend for the collectible card game, with increased drop rates of booster and combo packs. In order to snag them you're going to have to play EverQuest or EverQuest 2, the two games directly connected to Legends of Norrath's lore and gameplay. The card game's booster packs drop normally in those two titles, but this weekend SOE has decided to up the ante and ensure that you'll probably get a reward or two from your time in-game.

Players will also have the opportunity to snag two brand (non-foil) new cards in the booster packs, both of which (for the moment) are only available via this promo weekend.
