Initial impressions of EVE Online

Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Game mechanics, Opinion

Cody Bye over at Ten Ton Hammer is a man of his word. He recently announced that he'd be exploring EVE Online and writing about the experience. Well only a few days later, he's posted a follow-up editorial: "EVE Online Impressions - Riding the Unicycle." Sorry but there are no actual unicycles in EVE, it's just his reference to how the game takes some adjusting to before one can really feel comfortable flying in New Eden.

The piece is geared towards players who are already well-versed in more standard MMORPG game mechanics and UI, and explains some of the differences between EVE and most other titles in terms of character creation. Bye also touches on advancement in EVE, and the importance of patience and slow deliberation in planning your career (as well as succeeding in the game). It's a nice, easy introduction to the title, so if EVE Online is a game you've been interested in but haven't quite found the motivation to start a trial, you might want to check out Ten Ton Hammer's recurring editorial on the sci-fi MMO.

Ten Ton Hammer takes a closer look at EVE Online

Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Game mechanics, Opinion, Hands-on

Ten Ton Hammer's Managing Editor, Cody 'Micajah' Bye writes about EVE Online in his latest editorial, 'The Temptations of a Unique MMOG.' The piece -- the first of many to come -- is an exploration of a game where that standard MMO skillset, employed in virtually all of the industry's dominant fantasy titles, no longer applies.

Bye cites a few aspects of EVE that drew him to the game: depth, no level caps, no class restrictions, skills not determined by grinding time, and open gameplay. He also notes that EVE is becoming a game where players can (slowly) begin to change the rules and systems of the world. In these respects, EVE is largely free of many of the limitations found in other MMOs. However, he notes what many people on the outside looking in lament: EVE can be a very complex game.

The Empyrean Age Q&A with author Tony Gonzales

Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Expansions, Interviews, Lore, News items

TenTonHammer has done a well-timed interview with Tony Gonzales, Lead Writer for EVE Online, who as of next week will be the published author of a sci-fi novel titled The Empyrean Age. The novel ties in with the namesake game expansion that CCP rolled out just days ago; both the novel and the game deal with the strife of all-out galactic warfare between the four races of New Eden.

Gonzales talks about how he began as a volunteer writer for CCP Games, churning out fan fiction a cut above the rest and catching CCP's eye in the process. He discusses the challenges of making The Empyrean Age novel accessible to any fan of sci-fi, particularly those who are not familiar with the setting of EVE Online and the serendipity of 'being at the right place at the right time.' Have a look at the TenTonHammer interview and get an idea of the universal conflict Tony Gonzales brings to readers and gamers alike in The Empyrean Age. If you're interested in a sneak peak before the June 19 release date, TenTonHammer also has an excerpt from the novel at their site.

Age of Conan: Senior CSR responds to the recent mass banning

Filed under: Fantasy, Age of Conan, Bugs, Exploits, Forums, Launches, New titles, News items

Customer service in MMOGs leaves a lot to be desired. Normally you get a ticket, and you wait with ticket in mind, and your issue normally isn't resolved until your mind is lost. The petty bug that caused an item to disappear or quest reward isn't unheard of in EverQuest or World of Warcraft, but what about the larger exploitations like duping? Exploitation that involves players amassing an inordinate amount of items or gold in a relatively short amount of time requires prompt action before severe damage is caused.

Not long after launch day, Age of Conan, fell victim to such exploits. One involved the Demonologist class and leveling, and the other was a severe duping exploit via the trader system. Funcom is now under scrutiny for their handling of the situation. In many cases, Funcom opted to ban now, and suspend players for investigatory purposes before determining the final outcome. The aftermath from their decision had players crying foul, claiming that they did nothing wrong. In this interview with Ten Ton Hammer, the Senior Customer Service & QA Manager for Age of Conan explains the situation and admits that some suspended accounts were free from any illicit activity and reinstated. Some players are still awaiting word on their fate.

How do you think Funcom is handling the situation?

Matt Woodward interview gives us a glimpse at Empyrean Age

Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Expansions

Over at EVE Online's pavilion at New York Comic Con, one man would add to the hopes and dreams of thousands. Matt Woodward took a few moments of his time to talk to TenTonHammer on a subject close to the heart of many capsuleers. The subject? EVE of course, but most importantly, the expansion Empyrean Age. Take a few moments to put aside those evil schemes, dock, grab a Quafe, and tune in because the interview is packed with exciting hints at what is to come.

Matt explains in the interview that Empyrean Age will have fighting, glory, new missions and reputation, and plenty of fleet battles. One of the points made by Matt is that "the big fight that is coming" will allow everyone to be involved in one way or another. Rewards will be given, the front will shift, and the design is being hashed out to bring empire, lowsec, and 0.0 players together to duke it out. The expansion is going to pack one hell of a punch and is long overdue in the minds of many EVE pilots. When the expansion finally does arrive, players will rejoice as new ways to destroy one another are introduced. To us, that smells like victory.

Chronicles of Spellborn + Within Temptation = music video

Filed under: Fantasy, Video, New titles, Opinion, Machinima, Chronicles of Spellborn

Continuing the Chronicles of Spellborn love, reader Garold (who sent us the last CoS video) finds a new video for us to enjoy. Currently being seen on TenTonHammer, this is a music video of Holland-based group Within Temptation (who provided in-game music), featuring scenery, gameplay, and ... spaceships? Apparently there's more to Spellborn than previously revealed.

This video makes us think of I'm So Sick, though nothing can touch that video's quality. Still, it's definitely worth watching for a continued look at what we can expect when this MMO makes it to market.

[Thanks, Garold!]

TTH LotRO 1-20 leveling guide, part 2

Filed under: Fantasy, Lord of the Rings Online, Guides, Leveling

Darkgolem has the second part of his 1-20 leveling guide for Lord of the Rings Online posted at Ten Ton Hammer. It has a nice spreadsheet layout that covers all the different little bits involved in getting those first twenty levels. Everything is covered in the spreadsheet, including which quest was taken, location of the quest, time taken to complete quest, level attained upon finishing quest and whether it was done solo or in a group.

It took about three days of playing for about five hours each day, although Darkgolem says it could be done in a day. The only drawback to the power leveling was that he found himself without feats, crafting skill growth and about three hundred less silver in his pockets due to fast travel fees. If you don't mind any of that though, you too could be level twenty in one to three days. A good guide for any players that don't feel like staying in the starting areas too long on a repeat play-through.

TTH resource-gathering guide: Lone-Lands

Filed under: Fantasy, Lord of the Rings Online, Guides, Crafting, Tips and tricks

Compared to the last zone we examined in the TTH Lord of the Rings Online resource gathering series, for the bountiful Bree-Land, the Lone-Lands really fail to impress. In general, it's simply not a great place to do your harvesting. However, there are a few redeeming qualities that may cause you to visit the zone.

For example, the Lone-Lands guide asserts that there is no better area in the game to get your medium hides than the back areas of Midgewater Pass. Also, the tier 3 resources here are widespread, and the zone is one of the main sources of these materials for lower level characters who can't go much further, but aren't having luck harvesting for them in earlier areas.

To gleam what value you can out of this often frustrating area, check out the rest of the guide for the usual table and detailed look at individual portions of the zone.

TTH resource gathering guide: Bree-Land

Filed under: Fantasy, Lord of the Rings Online, Guides, Crafting, Tips and tricks

In this next installment of TenTonHammer's Lord of the Rings Online resource collecting guides, the focus shifts to Bree-Land, which contains tier 1, 2 and even tier 3 materials. The guide informs us that Bree-Land is a veritable gold mine (so to speak) when it comes to finding tier 1 and 2 resources, but although it does contain some tier 3 nodes, it is best to think of these as a nice bonus rather than to visit the zone particularly to find them.

There are once again some notes explaining different areas in-depth, but here are the real pro tips: for tier 2 resources, head to the Eastern Bree-Fields, and for tier 1, the Midgewater Marshes have what you need. Of course, on most resource runs you'll need to hit more than just a single area, especially when you're not the only one out there collecting, so check out the Bree-Land guide for another handy table and the rest of the hints for harvesting there.

TTH resource gathering guide: Ered Luin

Filed under: Fantasy, Lord of the Rings Online, Guides, Crafting, Tips and tricks

Ahh, Ered Luin. Not a bad harvesting zone, not really a good one either -- just average. The next in the series of the Lord of the Rings Online resource guides at TenTonHammer examines the fairly ordinary Ered Luin. Although it doesn't really shine for any particular resource, if you happen to be there anyway (for example, if you're leveling a character there) there is no reason that you shouldn't know a little more about where to find what you're looking for.

The guide's resource chart for Ered Luin shows that only one area scores an "Excellent" rating for any material, and that is Light Hides at the Vale of the Thrain. The Lowlands, north of Gondamon, also has a decent supply of Rowan wood. Apart from these exceptions, most other parts of the zone rate as "Fair" for each resource type -- but don't expect to find tier 2 materials in any great number. The full guide has some notes for each area, so take a look if you are thinking of hitting up Ered Luin for resources.

TTH features in-depth LotRO resource gathering guide for The Shire

Filed under: Fantasy, Lord of the Rings Online, Guides, Crafting, Tips and tricks

There's an odd feeling of satisfaction that comes from a really productive resource-gathering run -- knowing that you've spent your time at maximum efficiency and have picked up what you need to break into a new tradeskill tier, and can retire to the crafting area for the simple combines. Well, TenTonHammer can help streamline this process, with a series of resource gathering tutorials for Lord of the Rings Online that joins their other guides, and we'll first have a look at The Shire.

The guide is more than just fluff, with a resource chart that rates each area of The Shire's usefulness for any particular material that you wish to harvest. You will find both tier 1 and 2 resources in this zone, and the guide has a breakdown of various areas with some specific tips as well -- for example, Rushock Bog is supposedly the best place in The Shire to harvest ore, whereas the southern Shire areas are just very poor for resources in general, so steer clear.

The full guide contains other tips that will fill your bags to the brim with useful materials in no time, so have a look before your next resource run.

Doom the Angmarim using the new Angmar Deed guide

Filed under: Fantasy, Lord of the Rings Online, Guides, PvE

Angmar is not a pleasant place. It's the cornerstone of evil in Eriador, the region on which The Lord of the Rings Online presently focuses. It once was home to the throne of the Witch-king, the most powerful and important of Sauron's servants. Now it's inhabited by trolls, orcs, and hillmen who will not greet you warmly when you approach them.

Now ... go there and grind!

Ten Ton Hammer have published a guide to the Deeds you can complete in the region. Like their previous two Deed guides, their guide to the Deeds of Angmar is a great resource for players looking for Traits that give them an extra edge, or for cool titles like "Warlord of Angmar," "Doom of the Angmarim," or "Weird of the Worms." If you're brave enough to simply walk into Angmar, check the guide out. It could come in handy.

A guide to MapleStory item basics

Filed under: Fantasy, MapleStory, Economy, Guides, Crafting, Free-to-play, Browser

MapleStory, the free-to-play browser-based game from Nexon, can be a bit daunting for players unfamiliar with its particular brand of gameplay. TenTonHammer collaborated with Dean Cho, a developer on the game, to create a short introductory guide to items, weapons, and gear in the game.

Cho explains some of the basics of item acquisition, talks about the process of item synthesis, and expounds upon ways for players to expand their inventory space.

With so many different weapons and items to collect, space in your backpack is a premium. New MapleStory players have a limited carrying capacity, but there are ways to organise and extend your inventory. Instead of throwing away spare monster drops, Maplers should try selling them for a profit, either to shops or others players – remember, your rubbish may be very useful to somebody else. Alternatively look out for special NPCs who'll safely store items for you (at a price!), or splash out on some extra inventory slots from MapleStory's Cash shop, the unique store that allows you to accessorise your character with premium items paid for with real money.

Chronicles of Spellborn CM interview

Filed under: Fantasy, Interviews, MMO industry, New titles, Leveling, Chronicles of Spellborn

We haven't heard much here at Massively about The Chronicles of Spellborn, but what we have heard has been interesting. It's definitely a lesser-known MMORPG, and doesn't have the promotional power of Warhammer or some other MMOs currently in beta, but the dev team over there is definitely throwing around some interesting ideas. Want to play a fantasy MMO where gear doesn't matter, or where player skill is supposed to trump dicerolls? Then if this interview over at TenTonHammer is any indication, Spellborn might be your new favorite upcoming game.

TTH talks with Community Manager Pierre-Yves Deslandes about a game that seems to be aiming to break every MMO convention out there. Gear has no stats on it, so you can wear whatever you like anytime you want. Skills are layered, and meant to be used in conjunction with combos. And there is no auto-lock-- while Deslandes strays away from the "twitch" idea, they instead want to call it "focus." Instead of mindlessly clicking, you've got to be involved in the game.

Not all of it sounds completely new-- NPCs still give quests, and their big innovation in that area is that it's a book floating over their head rather than an exclamation mark. But Spellborn might be an interesting outing, especially if you're looking for something new in MMORPGs.
